Nordwesteuropa (NWE) hat monothematische Cluster für neuartige Materialien, regenerative Medizin oder -technik, die in RIS3-Strategien als Teil von SMART-Spezialisierungen anerkannt sind. Viele Materialinnovationen mit Potenzial im Medizinsektor (z.B. 3D-Druck, Nanobeschichtungen und bioabbaubare Polymere), die sich an den Schnittstellen dieser Disziplinen befinden, werden jedoch nicht oder nur langsam vom Markt angenommen und können daher der alternden NWE-Bevölkerung nicht angeboten werden. Hürden für die Integration dieser spezifischen Crossover-Innovationen sind: 1) Regionenübergreifend mangelnde Vernetzung der KMU und anderer Interessenvertreter in relevanten Sektoren; 2) Mangelnde Verfügbarkeit/Bekanntheit von Test-/ Charakterisierungsinfrastrukturen für die Skalierung in und zwischen den Regionen; 3) Lange Zyklen vom Investment zum Ertrag und Schwierigkeiten, Risikokapital zu erhöhen; 4) Wechselnde EU-Regulierungen für Medizinprodukte mit strengen Anforderungen an Gesundheits-/ Sicherheitstests und Materialcharakterisierungen. Daher können KMU dieser Sektoren ihre Wettbewerbsfähigkeit nicht ausschöpfen. MATMED geht diese Hürden in 8 NUTS2-Regionen an: Greater Manchester (GB), Gelderland, Overijssel, Limburg (NL), Münster, Köln (DE), Ostflandern und Flämisch-Brabant (BE). MATMED wird eine webbasierte Open-Innovation-Plattform betreiben, um KMU über ihre eigenen regionalen Netzwerke hinaus mit Forschern, spezialisierten privaten Investoren und untereinander zu verbinden. Ein Gutscheinstufensystem wird mind. 40 transnationale Kooperationen ermöglichen, mind. 20 Produkte validieren (TRL 4-5) und mind. 10 zur Demonstrationsphase (TRL 6-7) bringen, sodass mind. €5M zusätzliche Förderung von Privatinvestoren akkumuliert werden und innovative Lösungen den Markteintritt erreichen. Die Nachhaltigkeit der Matchmaking- & Testeinrichtungen und des Netzwerkes wird durch dauerhafte Unterstützung regionaler Regierungen und Mitgliederbeiträge gesichert.

L 'Europe du Nord-Ouest (ENO) a des clusters monothématiques sur les matériaux avancés, la médecine régénérative et les dispositifs médicaux, tous reconnus dans les stratégies RIS3 de spécialisation intelligente. Cependant, au carrefour de ces disciplines, beaucoup de matériaux avancés aptes pour le marché (p.ex. impression 3D, tissus nanotech et polymères biodégradables) ne sont pas adoptés ou sont lents à pénétrer le marché et ne sont donc pas à la portée de la population vieillissante de l’ENO. Les freins à l’adoption de ces innovations sont les suivants: 1) Les PME et autres acteurs n’ont pas de réseau multithématiques entre régions ; 2) Manque de disponibilité/conscience de test/caractérisation de l’infrastructure intra et inter régions ; 3) Cycles ayant un long retour sur investissement et un capital-risque difficile à obtenir ; 4) Changement du cadre régulateur des dispositifs médicaux dans l’UE avec de fortes exigences en termes de sûreté et caractérisation des matériaux. Par conséquent, les PME de ces secteurs sont moins compétitives qu’elles ne pourraient l’être. MATMED s’attaque à ces défis à travers 8 NUTS2 regions: Greater Manchester (UK), Gelderland, Overijssel et Limburg (NL), Munster et Cologne (DE) ainsi qu’en Flandre orientale et Brabant flamand (BE). MATMED gèrera une plateforme collaborative stimulant l’innovation pour connecter les PME aux chercheurs, investisseurs privés et à d’autres au delà des réseaux régionaux internes. Un programme de bons d’innovations à étapes facilitera au moins 40 collaborations transnationales, la validation de la technologie d’au moins 20 produits (TRL 4-5) et 10 atteignant la phase de démonstration (TRL 6-7), attirant au moins 5M€ de fond privés additionnels afin d’être mis sur le marché. La durabilité du jumelage et des expérimentations testant l’infrastructure ainsi que le réseau de courtage sera assurée grâce au soutien des gouvernements locaux et aux contributions des membres.

The North-West Europe (NWE) region has monothematic clusters focused on advanced materials, regenerative medicine or medical devices, which are recognised in RIS3 Strategies as part of Smart Specialisation. However, many advanced materials innovations with medical market potential (e.g. via 3D printing, nanotech coatings & biodegradable polymers) occurring at the crossroads of these disciplines fail to get adopted or are slow to enter the market and thus cannot offer solutions for the aging NWE population. Barriers to the take up of these specific type of crossover innovations include: 1) SMEs and other stakeholders are poorly networked between themes and regions; 2) Incomplete availability/awareness of testing/characterisation infrastructure for scale up within and across regions; 3) Long investment-to-financial-return cycles and difficulty to raise risk capital; 4) Changing regulatory framework for Medical Devices in the EU with strong requirements on health safety testing and materials characterisation. As a result, SMEs active in these sectors are less competitive than they otherwise could be. MATMED addresses these issues across 8 NUTS2 regions: Greater Manchester (UK), Gelderland, Overijssel, Limburg (NL), Münster, Köln (DE), East Flanders & Flemish Brabant (BE). MATMED will run a web-based open innovation and learning platform between regions to connect SMEs with researchers, specialised private investors and each other beyond their own regional networks. A multi-stage voucher scheme will facilitate at least 40+ transnational collaborations, 20+ products reaching technology validation (TRL 4-5) and 10+ reaching technology demonstration phase (TRL 6-7), attracting at least €5M of additional funding from private investors to help innovative solutions reach the market. The sustainability of the matchmaking & pilot testing facilities and the brokerage network is ensured by sustained local support combined with member contributions.

Expected Outputs (EN): 600 stakeholders (480 SMEs & 120 others) are active in NWE in the combination of AdvMat+RegMed, offering 4800 full-time jobs. 180 of these SMEs are collaborating on crossover products. Around 50 new products reach the market per year, €60M investment/year.
