Das Projekt hat zum Ziel, die Brüche innerhalb des Mathematikstudiums mithilfe einer Smartphone-App zu überwinden. Bildverarbeitung und mathematische Grundlagen sind Schlüsseltechnologien der Automatisierung und Digitalisierung. Die Bodenseeregion mit ihren vielen innovativen Unternehmen muss sich dem weltweiten Wettbewerb stellen – auch um die besten Köpfe. Der rasche Wandel erfordert eine hohe Anpassungsfähigkeit mit entsprechendem Bedarf an lebenslangem Lernen. Seamless Learning setzt an fragmentierten Lernerfahrungen an: In der Schule Erlerntes wird im Studium nicht mehr genutzt; in der Praxis Relevantes kann nicht aus dem Studium oder der Weiterbildung eingebracht werden. Ziel von Seamless Learning ist es, Brüche zu überwinden – zwischen einzelnen Bildungsstufen, zwischen Schul- und Berufswelt oder vom Analogen ins Digitale. Zudem werden neue Technologien eingesetzt. Lebenslanges nahtloses Lernen stellt eine Herausforderung für alle Fachbereiche dar, insbesondere in den MINT-Fächern. Leider sind Schwierigkeiten in der Mathematik oft mitverantwortlich für Studienabbrüche oder Misserfolge. Weshalb? Auf Sekundarstufe kam es teils zu Kürzungen des Mathematik-Unterrichts. Er unterscheidet sich zudem stark von den Modulen an der Fachhochschule. Und die Vorkenntnisse der Studierenden sind aufgrund verschiedener Lernbiographien recht unterschiedlich. Ebenfalls problematisch ist der Übergang von den sehr theoretischen Grundlagen des ersten Studienjahrs zu den anwendungsorientierten Ingenieurfächern in den späteren Studienjahren. Das Projekt will diesen Brüchen mit einem Seamless-Learning-Konzept begegnen – es soll beispielhaft aufzeigen, wie sie überwunden werden können. Im Mittelpunkt steht eine Smartphone-App für digitale Bildverarbeitung, die an Berufsmittelschulen und Fachhochschulen getestet wird. Damit können einfache Operationen an Bildern – zum Beispiel an Gesichtern – vorgenommen werden. Bildverarbeitung und ihre mathematischen Grundlagen sind eine Schlüsseltechnologie der Automatisierung und Digitalisierung. Mit der App – in Kombination mit Tutorials – können sie innovativ und anschaulich vermittelt werden. Das steigert die Qualität des Unterrichts.

The objective of the projects is to overcome fractures within the study of mathematics with the help of a smartphone app. Image processing and mathematical bases are key technologies for automation and digitalisation. The Lake Constance region, with its many innovative companies has to face worldwide competition – and the best minds too. The fast pace of change requires a high level of adaptability, with the corresponding requirement for lifelong learning. Seamless learning starts with fragmented learning experiences: What is learned in school is not used in later studying; studies or further training do not provide the elements relevant to practice. The aim of seamless learning is to overcome fractures – between individual learning stages, between the school and occupational areas, and from analogue to digital. New technologies are also deployed. Lifelong seamless learning represents a challenge for all subject areas, particularly the MINT subjects. Unfortunately, difficulties in mathematics are often partly responsible for fractures or lack of success in studies. Why is this? At the secondary level, this has often been due to cutbacks in the teaching of mathematics. It also differs greatly to the modules at university. And the prior knowledge of students can be very diverse due to various learning biographies. The transition from very theoretical bases in the first year of study to the application-orientated engineering subjects in the later years of study can also be problematic. The project seeks to confront these fractures with a seamless learning concept – this aims to illustrate how they can be overcome. Central to this is a smartphone app for digital image processing, which can be tested at vocational secondary schools and universities of applied science. It can be used to carry out simple operations on images – for example, on faces. Image processing and its mathematical bases are a key technology for automation and digitalisation. Using the app, they can be innovatively and clearly conveyed in combination with tutorials. This increases the quality of the teaching.

Das Ziel des Projektes war die Entwicklung eines Lernobjektes für den Mathematikunterricht an Fachhochschulen, mit dem Zweck die im Unterricht auftretenden Brüche (Seams) zwischen den Bildungsstufen zu überwinden. Das Lernobjekt besteht aus einer Smartphone-App, welche von den Studierenden im Unterricht verwendet wird in Kombination mit Tutorials, welche dazu parallel durchgearbeitet werden. Ausgangslage: Die Ausgangssituation ist eine 3 bis 4-stündige Mathematikvorlesung in verschiedenen Ingenieur- oder Informatikstudiengängen an Fachhochschulen. In einer solchen Unterrichtseinheit wird klassisch oft zuerst ein Theoriekonzept erarbeitet, die danach an verschiedenen mehr oder weniger „praxisnahen“ Beispielen geübt werden. In diesem Lehrkonzept entsteht für die Studierenden ein starker Bruch: Die Theorie wird erklärt, die Übung muss sich der Studierende selbst erarbeiten. Die Theorie ist abstrakt, die Anwendung jedoch viel konkreter. Diese auftretenden Brüche galt es in dem vorliegenden Projekt mit einem neuartigen innovativen didaktischen Konzept zu überwinden. Konzept: Das in diesem Projekt entwickelte didaktische Konzept besteht aus einem Lernobjekt, welches praktisch ohne erklärenden Theorieanteil auskommt. Die Unterrichtseinheit besteht aus einem Tutorial (Leitfaden), das mit Hilfe einer entwickelten Smartphone-App von den Studierenden durchgearbeitet wird. Die App enthält als Praxisbezug Elemente aus der Bildverarbeitung, das heißt, es werden vorgegebene Fotos oder hochgeladene Fotos mathematisch modifiziert, wodurch die abstrakten mathematischen Operationen (Differentiale, lineare Abbildungen, komplexe Zahlen) anschaulich sichtbar gemacht werden. Erkenntnisse: Es wurden zwei Evaluationen in je zwei Schritten durchgeführt: Jeweils eine Pre- und eine Post-Befragung vor und nach der Durchführung dieser Lehreinheit. Die erste Evaluation fand im Sommersemester 2019, die zweite im Sommersemester 2020 statt. Die Evaluationen erlauben einen Einblick, sowohl in die Entwicklung jeweils einer Student*innengruppe (Pre- und Posttest), als auch in die Entwicklung des Unterrichtskonzepts selbst (zwei verschiedene, befragte Gruppen). Wie sich in beiden Durchführungen an den beteiligten Hochschulen gezeigt hat, konnte mit Hilfe des neuen didaktischen Konzepts die Brücke zwischen Theorie und Praxis im Mathematikunterricht für die Studierenden sichtbar gemacht werden. Jedoch hat es sich auch gezeigt, dass nur eine Minderheit der Studierenden die Brücke dann auch wirklich aktiv überschreiten konnte. Dennoch sehen wir das im vorliegenden Projekt erarbeitete Lehrkonzept und die damit verbundene Möglichkeit, die Inhalte auf vielfältige Weise erarbeiten zu können, als ein innovatives Konzept mit großem Erfolgspotenzial an, um Theorie und Praxis von der ersten Stunde an näher zusammenzubringen. Das größte Problem bei diesem Lehrkonzept war der Konzeptwechsel im Laufe der Gesamtveranstaltung. In der Tat empfehlen wir die komplette Lehrveranstaltung in dieser Art zu konzipieren, da sonst ein neuer Bruch entsteht, nämlich der Bruch des Lehrkonzepts innerhalb einer Vorlesung.

The aim of the project was to develop a learning object for mathematics teaching at universities of applied sciences, with the aim of overcoming the breaks (seams) occurring in the classroom between the levels of education. The learning object consists of a smartphone app, which is used by the students in the classroom in combination with tutorials, which are worked through in parallel. Starting position: The starting point is a 3 to 4 hour math lecture in various engineering or computer science courses at universities of applied sciences. In such a teaching unit, classically often a theory concept is developed first, which are then practiced on various more or less “practice-related” examples. This teaching concept creates a strong break for the students: The theory is explained that the exercise must be self-developed by the student. The theory is abstract, but the application is much more concrete. In this project, these emerging fractures had to be overcome with a novel innovative didactic concept. Concept: The didactic concept developed in this project consists of a learning object, which is practically without an explanation of theory. The lesson consists of a tutorial (guide), which is worked through by the students with the help of a developed smartphone app. The app contains elements from image processing as a practical reference, i.e. predetermined photos or uploaded photos are mathematically modified, thereby rendering the abstract mathematical operations (differential, linear images, complex numbers) vividly visible. Findings: Two evaluations were carried out in two steps each: Each one pre- and one post survey before and after the completion of this teaching unit. The first evaluation took place in the summer semester 2019, the second in the summer semester 2020. The evaluations allow an insight into the development of each student group (pre- and post-test), as well as the development of the teaching concept itself (two different groups interviewed). As has been shown in both implementations at the participating universities, the new didactic concept has made the bridge between theory and practice in mathematics lessons visible to the students. However, it has also been shown that only a minority of students were able to actively cross the bridge. Nevertheless, we consider the teaching concept developed in this project and the associated possibility to develop the content in a variety of ways as an innovative concept with great potential for success in order to bring theory and practice closer together from the very beginning. The biggest problem with this teaching concept was the change of concept during the overall event. In fact, we recommend to design the complete course in this way, otherwise a new break arises, namely the break of the teaching concept within a lecture.
