Laufenburg eight

Die beiden Laufenburg, Laufenburg (Baden) und Laufenburg (Aargau), legen gemeinsam einen 6,2 Kilometer langen Rundweg durch die beiden Städte direkt am Rhein an. Da es drei Rhein-Übergänge in diesem Abschnitt gibt, können die Benutzer des Rundweges immer wieder zwischen den beiden Städten und Ländern hin- und herwechseln. Daher auch der Name "Laufenburger Acht". Die Idee der "Laufenburger Acht" besteht bereits mehrere Jahrzehnte und soll nun realisiert werden. Nachdem die Energiedienst GmbH zum 100. Jubiläum des Wasserkraftwerkes in Laufenburg im Jahr 2014 den Kraftwerkssteg über den Rhein für rund 500.000 Euro umgebaut hat, kann der Steg in den Monaten Mai bei einschließlich Oktober von Fußgängern und Radfahrern genutzt werden. Damit ist nun zwar der dritte Übergang für Fußgänger passierbar, um einen rheinnahen Rundweg anbieten zu können, sind aber auf beiden Rheinseiten noch diverse Maßnahmen notwendig. Auf der deutschen Rheinseite muss zwischen Altstadt und Kraftwerk ein Weg angelegt werden. Die schwierigen topografischen Verhältnisse stellen dabei eine Herausforderung dar. So ist eine Brücke über den einmündenden Schreiebach sowie eine Rampenkontruktion in Form einer Acht zu Überwindung von Höhendifferenzen zu errichten. Auch die Installation einer Aufzugsanlage zur Anbindung des florierenden Einkaufzentrums Laufenpark ist auf der deutschen Rheinseite geplant. Auf Schweizer Seite sollen die bereits vorhandenen Wege, Treppen und Rampen einschließlich Beleuchtung saniert werden. Des Weiteren werden ein Wohnmobilstellplatz sowie Toilettenanlagen an der sog. Badmatte neu errichtet. Die "Laufenburger Acht", welche über das älteste, noch im Originalzustand erhaltene Laufwasserkraftwerk am Hochrhein führt, soll durch ein gemeinsames grenzüberschreitendes Tourismuskonzept vermarktet werden. Auch die Beschilderung des Weges sowie die Einrichtung von Themenstationen und Schautafeln sollen in der Schweiz und Deutschland einheitlich erfolgen. Tafeln sollen die Bevölkerung beispielsweise über die Themen Wasserkraft, Geologie, Gewässerreinhaltung, historische Bauten und Lebensraum des Bibers aufklären. Durch die "Laufenburger Acht" wird eine der letzten Lücken im überregionalen Wandernetz entlang des Hochrheins geschlossen. Die Projektpartner erwarten, dass die beiden Altstädte durch den Weg belebt werden. Beides hat positive Auswirkungen auf den Tourismus, insbesondere mit einer höheren Verweildauer des Tagestouristen wird gerechnet. Auch der neue Wohnmobilstellplatz auf Schweizer Seite trägt hierzu bei. Die Bürger beiderseits des Rheins nutzen das Kultur- und Freizeitangebot im jeweils "anderen" Laufenburg wie selbstverständlich. Die "Laufenburger Acht" wird diesen Effekt verstärken, weil örtliche Barrieren mit dem Weg künftig noch weniger ins Gewicht fallen. Das Interreg-Projekt und die damit verbundenen Abstimmungsbedarfe sollen nun zum Anlasse genommen werden, die institutionelle Zusammenarbeit noch weiter auszubauen. Durch das gemeinsame Bauprojekt werden erstmals auch die beiden Bauämter zusammenarbeiten. Andere Verwaltungsebenen werden durch das Vorhaben ebenso in engerem Kontakt stehen als bisher. Gleiches gilt für die jeweiligen politischen Gremien. Das Kennenlernen des Partners im Nachbarland wird Verständnis für einander erwachsen lassen und kann Grundstein für Zusammenarbeit beider Laufenburg in weiteren Projekten sein.

Both towns of Laufenburg - Laufenburg (Baden) and Laufenburg (Aargau), are jointly creating a 6.2 kilometre circular path through both towns directly on the Rhine. As there are three Rhine crossings in this section, the users of the circular path can keep alternating between both towns and countries. Hence the name "Laufenburg eight”. The idea for the “Laufenburg eight” has been around for several decades and is now to be executed. After Energiedienst GmbH, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of hydroelectric power station in Laufenburg in 2014, rebuilt the power station footbridge across the Rhine at a cost of around EUR 500,000, it has been possible for pedestrians and cyclists to use footbridge in the months of May to October inclusive. So now the third crossing for pedestrians is usable, but more diverse measures are required on both sides of the Rhine to be able to offer a circular path close to the Rhine: On the German side of the Rhine, a path has to be created between the old town and the power station. The difficult topographic conditions present a challenge here. A bridge therefore has to be constructed over the Schreiebach, which runs into it, as well as a ramp construction in the form of an eight to overcome the height difference. The installation of a lift system to connect the flourishing Laufenpark shopping centre is planned on the German side of the Rhine. On the Swiss side, the existing paths, steps and ramps including the lighting, are to be renovated and extended. Furthermore, a camper van site as well as toilet facilities are to be newly constructed on the so-called “Badmatte”. The “Laufenburg eight”, running across the oldest run-of-river power station on the High Rhine, which has been preserved in its original condition, is to be marketed via a joint cross-border tourism concept. The signposting of the path as well as the construction of theme stations and information boards is to take place uniformly in Switzerland and Germany. Boards are to be set up to explain to the public the topics of hydroelectric power, geology, water pollution control, historical buildings and the habitat of the beaver. The “Laufenburg eight” means that the last gap in the inter-regional hiking network along the High Rhine will be closed. The project partners anticipate that both old towns will be revitalised by the path. Both will have positive effects on tourism, particularly as it is estimated there will be a higher number of tourist stays. The new camper van site on the Swiss side will contribute to this too. Citizens on both side of the Rhine will use the cultural and leisure range in the “other” Laufenburg as a matter of course. The “Laufenburg eight” will intensify this effect because local barriers will be considered less in the future thanks to this path. The Interreg project and the associated need for coordination should be taken as an opportunity to further extend institutional cooperation. Both building authorities will also work together for the first time thanks to this joint construction project. Other levels of administration will be in closer contact than before too as a result of the project. The same applies to the relevant political bodies. The fact that the partners in the neighbouring countries will become acquainted will allow for understanding of one another to grow, and could become the cornerstone for the cooperation of both towns of Laufenburg in further projects.

The two cities of Laufenburg (Baden) in Germany and Laufenburg (AG) in Switzerland want to create a 6 km long circular route through the two cities directly on the Rhine, which is lined with various play and adventure stations for young and old. Since there are three Rhine crossings in this section, users can switch back and forth between the two cities and countries – hence also the name of the circular hiking trail: “Laufenburger Acht”. The two cities of Laufenburg have achieved their goal together with their associate partner High Rhine Commission: The circular trail “Laufenburger Acht”, which has the shape of the digit eight, was created. A circular path between the two Rhine bridges and the power plant is now accessible to the public. This brings a long-cherished dream of the Laufenburgers to come true. For about a hundred years, there have been constant attempts to make all sections along the Rhine accessible, but the plans had to be rejected again and again due to their complexity. But now, thanks to the help of the Interreg funding, they still became a reality. On the circular trail “Laufenburger Acht” you will find numerous viewpoints that offer a great view of the picturesque old towns. In some places, it actually seems that the Swiss and German Laufenburg are not spatially separated, but truly a city – just as it once was politically until the separation by Napoleon and still corresponds to the emotional situation of many Laufenburgers. In one area, the path had to be completely redesigned. The sometimes difficult topographical conditions of the route can be overcome side by side with spectacular suspension bridges and bridges. With the construction of these special structures, one of the last gaps in the cross-regional hiking network has been closed at the same time. The “Laufenburger Acht” is lined by many game and adventure stations as well as explanatory boards. The stations playfully convey knowledge about the common history of the two Laufenburg and their special features. Topics include local geology, hydroelectric power generation and local fish species. The play stations such as the impeller or the climbing frame “Biberburg” particularly delight small visitors. The stations were integrated into a common tourism and marketing concept for the “Laufenburger Acht”. In both cities, one is proud of the new attractive offer, which has contributed to an increase in the duration of stay in both Laufenburg in day tourism. Since the “Laufenburger Acht” was opened in April 2022 with the participation of numerous local associations and businesses, the old towns have experienced a significant revival. In particular, the local catering establishments benefit from the creation of the new offer in the long term. However, the Laufenburg population also benefits from the “Laufenburger Acht” in their everyday life, since it is suitable as an everyday walk and jogging route close to the home, which on the German side connects the new residential area as well as the industrial district of Rhina within walking distance with the core city.

Die grenzüberschreitende gemeinsame Vermarktung der "Laufenburger Acht" stellt eine Vertiefung der ohnehin bereits grenzüberschreitend betriebenen Zusammenarbeit im Bereich Tourismus dar. Die Tourismusstellen haben in Bezug auf die grenzüberschreitende Zusammenarbeit Vorbild-Charakter für die gesamte übrige Verwaltung: Durch das Projekt und die damit verbundenen Entscheidungen arbeiten die Gemeinderäte beider Laufenburg zusammen. Auch für den Gemeindeamann (CH) sowie für den Bürgermeister (D) ergeben sich neue Impulse für die bereits bestehende Zusammenarbeit. Eine Neuerung ist die Kooperation der beiden Bau(verwaltungs)ämter bzw. der restliches Teils der jeweiligen Gemeindeverwaltung, u.a. z. B. Finanzverwaltung. Durch die Zusammenarbeit lernen die Mitarbeiter und Gemeinderäte das jeweils andere System kennen, beginnen es zu verstehen und entwickeln Verständnis für andere Abläufe.
