The aim of the project is the academic handling of the topic of migration in the past and present in Upper Swabia and Vorarlberg, as well as the application of what has been compiled in exhibitions, collection concepts, smaller research projects and educational museum projects. The museums want to set themselves the challenge of holding a social-political discussion on a daily basis and making their contribution to the integration of migrants. Together with 30 project and cooperation partners from five countries, from 2008 - 2015, the Wolfegg farmhouse museum grappled intensively with the topic of the seasonal migration of children from Swabia in a project funded by the Interreg IV programme. This specific topic is now to be explored further. An exhibition is planned in the fisherman’s house in the Wolfegg farmhouse museum on the topic of "guest workers on the land”. Further stands on the history of migration are included in other buildings in the museum. This is also to be taken into account in educational museum programmes. A network is first to be created to permanently work with cultural associations from different nations. The Vorarlberg museum has set new emphases with the VIEWING project format since 2013. Through active searching and display, but also through the presentation and discussion of points of view about the country and in the country, new core focuses are set for collections, research and exhibitions. New parties from migrant cultures are increasingly becoming involved. The important objective of the museum association of Klostertal is to set up an archive about migration history with a relevant database for collecting biographical details. At the same time, the results are made the subject of discussion in the form of publications, public events and educational museum projects. Smaller sub-projects are to be implemented in the form of touring exhibitions. The Montafon stand will develop the topic, along with the educational museum materials on the reappraisal of basic aspects of migration in the history of and present day Montafon, and will work out and implement a variety of information services (exhibitions and events). The focus will be the transformation of the seasonal emigration area into the seasonal immigration area. These previously completely unprocessed aspects of migration will come under the spotlight within the project. The newly founded Xenia association in Bludenz has taken up the promotion of social diversity and its acceptance as an aim. In the light of the current social situation, besides the documentation and communication of topics on historical and current migration, the targeted launch of educational measures becomes another core theme for the Xenia association with the current Interreg project. The need for this should first be raised in the town of Bludenz, and then a suitable programme of measures developed, which are relevant and useful for the other PPs.

The aim of the project is to study the topic of migration in the past and present in Upper Swabia and Vorarlberg, as well as the implementation of the work done in exhibitions, collection concepts, smaller research projects and museum pedagogical projects. The partners wanted to contribute to the socio-political discussion and contribute to integration. The research of the Farmhouse Museum Allgäu-Oberschwaben Wolfegg focused on the history of “guest workers” and “guest workers” in rural Upper Swabia in the 1950s to 1980s. In addition to extensive literature and, above all, archive research, a total of 49 contemporary witnesses were interviewed. For the first time, the narrative bus — an artistically redesigned Ford Transit from 1968 — was used as a driving auratic object in the history of migration. It was also successfully used at the locations of the other project participants. The narrative bus also established a “experienced” connection among the partners as “key visual” in the project area. The life stories were documented as audio and video and form the heart of the exhibition “come — create — stay”. “Guest workers” and “guest workers” in rural Upper Swabia. It was opened in March 2021 in the Fischerhaus, now part of the museum, in the 1970s accommodation of Turkish guest workers. As planned in the funding application, numerous events and mediation programmes on migration were offered over the course of the project, in which cultural mediators and cultural associations of different nations were co-operated. For the Vorarlberg Museum, three topics were the focus of the project. For the first time, the forms of labour migration in the tourism sector and their effects on regional and family structures were examined multi-perspectively via interviews with contemporary witnesses. The life reports enrich the mosaic of migration history with personal experiences and have a high source value for further research in the field of migration history. Another project focus was on the low-threshold communication of migration history outside the museum in places and places in public spaces and in the associated remembrance work. The Vorarlberg Museum also used the “telling bus” and specifically used it as a trigger of memories. Under the motto “How do we talk about migration”, thematically relevant exhibitions of the Vorarlberg Museum pay particular attention to the reception of migration history and their mediation. The research and mediation activities in the Montafon museums focused on various forms of forced migration in the Nazi era. In the course of examining the stories of escape, captivity of war and forced labour, interviews with contemporary witnesses, archive and library research were conducted and objects and photographs were collected through calls to the population. The results of these research activities were included in the 15 commemorative signs in the localities of the region, as well as the accompanying brochure and website. As a whole, the commemorative signs form an exhibition that makes the topic permanently visible in public space. During remembrance walks, mediation activities take place and these places of remembrance are regularly visited. The Museum Association Klostertal has turned to the project of emigration from the Klostertal until the 20th century and the migration to the region since the 19th century. For this purpose, archive searches were carried out and the association’s library was expanded thematically. In September 2019, various aspects of the migration history of the valley were examined in a symposium at the Klostertal Museum. The results could be published in an anthology in the series of works of the Museumverein Klostertal. An essential result of the project are two travelling exhibitions on immigration into and emigration from the Klostertal. According to the regions of origin and destination, these are designed in two languages (German/Italian or German/French). In the future, it is also intended to establish new links with different European regions. Numerous interviews with contemporary witnesses as well as several events round off the list of results of the project. The association Xenia, founded shortly before the start of the project, was able to gain valuable experience and develop structures by participating in the project. Thus, the basis for a library of language funding materials was laid, a website was established and fundamental cooperations were established in the Bludenz region. The main goal was to develop the basis for a migration archive of the city of Bludenz. This was achieved through interviews with contemporary witnesses, as well as the collection of photographs and the creation of a database. The results of the project have been presented in contributions for the magazine KulturGut, published in the district of Ravensburg, as well as in a scientific yearbook, as well as in a podcast episode. An exhibition and several events that would have been planned for the final phase of the project were impossible because of the uncertain COVID situation. However, the basis for such activities has been created in the future.

Ziel des Projektes ist die wissenschaftliche Bearbeitung des Themas Migration in Vergangenheit und Gegenwart in Oberschwaben und Vorarlberg sowie die Umsetzung des Erarbeiteten in Ausstellungen, Sammlungskonzeptionen, kleineren Forschungsprojekten und museumspädagogischen Projekten. Die Partner wollten sich damit in die gesellschaftspolitische Diskussion einbringen und einen Beitrag zur Integration leisten. Die Forschung des Bauernhaus-Museums Allgäu-Oberschwaben Wolfegg konzentrierte sich auf die Geschichte der „Gastarbeiterinnen“ und „Gastarbeiter“ im ländlichen Oberschwaben in den 1950er bis 1980er Jahren. Dazu wurden neben umfangreichen Literatur- und vor allem Archivrecherchen insgesamt 49 Zeitzeuginnen und Zeitzeugen befragt. Bei der Suche nach auskunftsbereiten Personen kam zum ersten Mal der Erzählbus – ein künstlerisch umgestalteter Ford Transit von 1968 – als fahrendes auratisches Objekt der Migrationsgeschichte zum Einsatz. Er wurde auch an den Standorten der übrigen Projektteilnehmenden erfolgreich eingesetzt. Der Erzählbus stellte außerdem gleichsam als „key visual“ im Projektgebiet eine „erfahrbare“ Verbindung unter den Partnern her. Die Lebenserzählungen wurden als Audio und Video dokumentiert und bilden das Herzstück der Ausstellung „kommen - schaffen - bleiben. 'Gastarbeiterinnen' und 'Gastarbeiter' im ländlichen Oberschwaben". Sie wurde im März 2021 im heute zum Museum gehörenden Fischerhaus, in den 1970er Jahren Unterkunft türkischer Gastarbeiter, eröffnet. Wie im Förderantrag geplant, wurden im Laufe der Projektlaufzeit zahlreiche Veranstaltungen und Vermittlungsprogramme zum Thema Migration angeboten, bei denen mit Kulturvermittler/innen und Kulturvereinen unterschiedlicher Nationen zusammengearbeitet wurde. Für das Vorarlberg Museum standen drei Themenkreise im Zentrum des Projekts. Zum ersten wurden multiperspektivisch über Interviews mit Zeitzeug*innen die Formen von Arbeitsmigration im Tourismusbereich und deren Auswirkungen auf regionale und familiäre Strukturen erfasst. Die Lebensberichte bereichern das Mosaik der Migrationsgeschichte um persönlich Erlebtes und haben einen hohen Quellenwert für weitere Forschungen im Bereich der Migrationsgeschichte. Ein weiterer Projektschwerpunkt lag in der niederschwelligen Kommunikation von Migrationsgeschichte außerhalb des Museums an Orten und Plätzen im öffentlichen Raum und in der damit verbundenen Erinnerungsarbeit. Auch das Vorarlberg Museum setzte den „Erzählbus“ ein und nutzte ihn gezielt als Trigger von Erinnerungen. Unter dem Motto „Wie sprechen wir, wenn wir über Migration sprechen“ wurde in thematisch einschlägigen Ausstellungen des Vorarlberg Museum besonders auf die Rezeption von Migrationsgeschichte und deren Vermittlung Augenmerk gelegt. Wichtig war dem Haus dabei, in den Ausstellungen den jeweiligen Akteur*innen aus den unterschiedlichen Herkunftsländern eine eigene Stimme zu geben und nicht „über“ sie zu sprechen. Der Austausch mit den Projektpartnern zu genau diesen Themen floss wiederum in die Kuratierung der Ausstellung „Gastarbeiterinnen und Gastarbeiter“ im ländlichen Oberschwaben“ im Bauernhaus-Museum in Wolfegg ein. Im Fokus der Forschungs- und Vermittlungsaktivitäten in den Montafoner Museen standen verschiedene Formen der erzwungenen Migration in der NS-Zeit. Im Zuge der Aufarbeitung der Geschichten von Flucht, Kriegsgefangenschaft und Zwangsarbeit wurden Interviews mit Zeitzeuginnen und Zeitzeugen geführt, Archiv- und Bibliotheksrecherchen unternommen und durch Aufrufe an die Bevölkerung auch Objekte und Fotografien gesammelt. Die Ergebnisse dieser Forschungsaktivitäten flossen in die 15 Erinnerungszeichen in den Ortschaften der Region sowie in die dazugehörige Broschüre und die Website ein. Gesamthaft bilden die Erinnerungszeichen eine Ausstellung, die das Thema dauerhaft im öffentlichen Raum sichtbar macht. Im Rahmen von Erinnerungsspaziergänge finden Vermittlungsaktivitäten statt und werden diese Erinnerungsorte regelmäßig besucht. Der Museumsverein Klostertal hat sich im Projekt der Auswanderung aus dem Klostertal bis ins 20. Jahrhundert und der Zuwanderung in die Region seit dem 19. Jahrhundert zugewandt. Dazu wurden Archivrecherchen durchgeführt und die Bibliothek des Vereins thematisch erweitert. In einem Symposium im Klostertal Museum wurden im September 2019 unterschiedliche Aspekte der Migrationsgeschichte des Tales beleuchtet. Die Ergebnisse konnten in einem Sammelband in der Schriftenreihe des Museumsvereins Klostertal publiziert werden. Ein wesentliches Ergebnis des Projekts sind zwei Wanderausstellungen zur Einwanderung in das und Auswanderung aus dem Klostertal. Den Herkunfts- und Zielregionen entsprechend sind diese zweitsprachig angelegt (Deutsch/Italienisch bzw. Deutsch/Französisch). Zukünftig sollen damit auch neue Verbindung zu verschiedenen europäischen Regionen hergestellt werden. Zahlreiche Interviews mit Zeitzeuginnen und Zeitzeugen sowie mehrere Veranstaltungen runden die Liste der Ergebnisse des Projekts ab. Der kurz vor Projektstart gegründete Verein Xenia konnte durch die Teilnahme am Projekt wertvolle Erfahrungen sammeln und Strukturen entwickelt. So wurden die Basis für eine Bibliothek mit Materialien zur Sprachförderung gelegt, eine Webseite eingerichtet und grundlegende Kooperationen in der Region Bludenz etabliert. Das wichtigste Ziel war es, die Basis für ein Migrationsarchiv der Stadt Bludenz zu entwickeln. Das konnte durch Interviews mit Zeitzeuginnen und Zeitzeugen erreicht werden, außerdem wurde mit dem Sammeln von Fotografien und der Anlegung einer Datenbank begonnen. Die Ergebnisse des Projekts sind in Beiträgen für die im Landkreis Ravensburg erscheinende Zeitschrift „KulturGut“ sowie in einem wissenschaftlichen Jahrbuch vorgestellt worden, außerdem in einer Podcast-Folge. Eine Ausstellung und mehrere Veranstaltungen, die für die letzte Phase des Projekts geplant gewesen wären, wurden wegen der unsicheren COVID-Situation verunmöglicht. Allerdings ist die Basis für solche Aktivitäten in der Zukunft geschaffen worden.

Die Museen erwarten sich durch die Aufarbeitung und ansprechende Präsentation eines gesellschaftlich relevanten Themas vermehrtes Interesse der Besucher und einen Besucherzuwachs. Insbesondere durch Vermittlungsangebote für Schulklassen mit Führungen und Mitmachprojekten soll das Thema breit kommuniziert werden und das Interesse von Schülern an den beteiligten Museen gesteigert werden.
