Description (DE): Fett-ähnliche Substanzen("Lipide") sind für den Organismus von großer Bedeutung, da diese Substanzen sowohl für gesunden Organismus auch für Volkskrankheiten (kardiovaskulär, renale, neuronale und Krebs) essentiell sind. Lipide tragen zu der bis 80%-igen Mortalität dieser Erkrankungen bei. Lipide sind auch für die Funktionalität von Biomaterialen bedeutsam. EURLIPID wird eine Ausbildungs-, Technologie- und Innovations-Plattform etablieren, um dieses Gesundheitsproblem anzugehen. Es soll ein „Lipid Valley“ in der EUREGION geschaffen werde, um hierdurch auch die lokale Wirtschaft anzukurbeln.
Warum dieses Projekt?
Lipide (z.B. Cholesterin, Omega-3) sind von entscheidender Bedeutung für Herz-/Kreislauferkrankungen (z.B. Infarkte), neuronalen Erkrankungen (z.B. Alzheimer), Krebs sowie bei Alterungsprozessen. Dies sind die bedeutsamsten Erkrankungen der westlichen Gesellschaften und bedingen eine hohe Mortalität, was i. B. für die EUREGIO mit einem niedrigen sozioökonomischen Niveau und aufgrund des demografischen Wandels der Region von Relevanz ist. So ist der Anteil an älteren Menschen in unserer Bevölkerung etwa 25% höher im Vergleich zu anderen Regionen. Auch sind Lipide essentiell bedeutsam für die Funktionalität von Biomaterialien. Die Untersuchung von Lipiden bei der Biomaterial-Entwicklung ist daher von entscheidender Bedeutung. Jüngste technologische Durchbrüche ermöglichen es nun erstmalig, deren Funktion aufzuklären. In der EUREGIO verfügen wir dazu über herausragende Zentren für diese Lipidforschung. EURLIPIDS vereint diese regionalen Zentren zu einer einzigartigen Plattform der Wissenschaft und Technologie ("Lipidomics"). Der Austausch von Personen, Wissen und Infrastrukturen wird eine euregionalen Exzellenz-Plattform für eine grenzüberschreitende Ausbildung und innovativer Technologie-Entwicklung generieren. EURLIPIDS weißt das Wissen, den definierten Fokus und die kritische Masse auf, um einen gänzlich neuen Innovationsansatz zu etablieren. Sie dient als Inkubator/Beschleuniger der Aktivitäten der regionalen KMUs des Gesundheit-/Biomaterialien-Sektors. Die Plattform wird weltweite Anerkennung finden, und die Wettbewerbsfähigkeit der KMUs fördern, in der wiederum eine junge Generation Beschäftigung finden werden („Lipid-Valley“). Diese Aktivitäten werden zu neuen Diagnostika, Therapeutika und Biomaterialien führen, und so eine Marktnische mit großen sozioökonomischen Wert füllen, die die EUREGIO langfristig stärkt.
Warum die Euregio?
Die EUREGIO ist für die Etablierung der Plattform aus mehreren Gründen prädestiniert: Erstens ist die Region durch eine hervorragende Infrastruktur der Lipidanalyse (DSM), sowie sehr profilierten Partnern mit komplementären Ansätzen/Kenntnisse im analytisch-technologischen Bereich (M4I, Aachen, Liège, Leuven) und im Bereich der Gesundheitswissenschaften (MUMC +, Aachen, Hasselt) ausgewiesen. Aufbauend auf den bisherigen Initiativen/Investitionen (Brightlands, BioVille, WBC) verfügt die EUREGIO neben der notwendigen Bildungsstruktur, auch die notwendige technologische und wissenschaftlichen Infrastruktur eine entsprechende Plattform auf Weltklasseniveau aufzubauen. Zweitens wird EULIPIDS hochqualifizierte Lipid-Experten ausbilden, die die wachsende unternehmerische Tätigkeit in der EUREGIO fördern und zur Stärkung der grenzüberschreitenden Interaktionen der Industrie- und akademischen Partnern nachhaltig beitragen. Dies wird Arbeitsplätze schaffen und die wirtschaftliche Situation der EUREGIO zu erhöhen.
Warum wird das funktionieren?
EURLIPIDS ist durch zwei besondere Stärken charakterisiert: 1) Die Plattform bietet ein umfassendes Lipidomics-Ausbildungsprogramm an. Die Studenten werden sowohl von Hochschulen als auch Industrie-/KMU-Partnern ausgebildet, wodurch sie komplementären Erfahrungen im Know-how und der Infrastruktur der Partner kennenlernen werden. Dies wird zur Intensivierung der grenzüberschreitenden Kooperationen führen, die Wissenschaft und Technologie grenzüberstreitend und gegenseitig befruchten und zu Innovationen führen. 2) Aufbauend auf bereits bestehende, jedoch zum Teil noch fragile Partnerschaften bietet EURLIPID eine Plattform für längerfristige, grenzüberschreitende Kooperationen. Die Fusionierung von „state-of-the-Art“ Infrastrukturen und der Austausch von Wissenschaftlern, Ideen und Ressourcen wird zum Ausbau der Interaktionen führen. Die vorhandene, kritische Masse im „Lipid-Valley“ ist die Voraussetzung für Innovationen und neuer Spin-offs im Bereich der Chemie, Gesundheit, Lebensmittel und Biomaterialien. Insgesamt wird EURLIPIDS ein euregionales Dach für Bildungs-, Technologie- und Innovationsaktivitäten im Bereich Lipidomics etablieren. Diese akademischen und unternehmerischen Aktivitäten werden von hoch qualifizierten Experten der Lipid-Technologie und der Medizin durchgeführt, um so eine einzigartige, tragfähige und wissensbasierte wirtschaftliche Entwicklung in der EUREBIO zu initiieren.

These substances are involved in the genesis and progression of cardiovascular, renal, cancer and brain diseases. They are essential for health, responsible for diseases causing 80% of human mortality. Lipids play an important role in the functionality and tolerability of biomaterials. EURLIPID aims to set up a regional cross-border teaching, technology and innovation platform to combat this number one health problem. This will create a “Lipid Valley”, an attractive environment for local talent, leading scientist, specialized SME’s which will boost local economy.
Why this project?
Lipids (fat related compounds, eg Cholesterol, omega-3) are crucial in heart (infarct) and brain diseases (Alzheimer’s, stroke), cancer and in general aging processes. These diseases sweep western society and account for over 80% mortality, in particular in the Euregio with its low social-economic level and high proportion of elderly people. The population of elderly is approximately 25% higher compared to other regions. Lipids play also an essential role in the acceptance and functionality of biomaterials by the organism. Analysis of lipids adhering to biomaterials is crucial in developing biocompatible materials. Recent technological breakthroughs allow to study and valorize on the knowledge of lipids in the diseases and their interaction with biomaterials. The Euregio disposes of outstanding academic and industrial centers for lipid research, which are united into a unique platform on the technology and science of lipids (“lipidomics”). Exchanging persons and connecting knowhow and infrastructures will result in an Euregional excellence platform for cross-border education and for innovative technology development and valorization. Our platform harbors the expertise, focus and critical mass to generate unprecedented innovation and serves as incubator as well as accelerator for local SMEs in the Health and Biomedical sector. The platform will have global recognition and boost competitiveness and success of local SMEs, where a new generation of experts can find employment (Lipid Valley). This development will lead to new diagnostics and therapeutics that target disease-associated detrimental lipids. It also supports development of new biomedical materials, tapping a unique niche market of incredible socio-economic value, increasing the economic situation of the Euregio on a long term.
Why the Euregion?
The Euregio is well situated for the EURLIPID platform. First, the region is characterized by an excellent infrastructure and knowledge on lipid analysis (DSM) and home to highly esteemed academic partners with complementary facilities, knowledge and knowhow in analytical technologies (M4I, RWTH Aachen, CART Liège, Leuven) and health sciences (MUMC+, Clinic Aachen, Hasselt University). Leveraging on recent regional initiatives (Brightlands, BioVille, WBC) and investments by industrial and academic partners, the Euregion disposes of the right educational, technological and scientific infrastructure to build a world-class platform. Second, this platform will train new highly skilled experts in lipid analyses that will foster the growing entrepreneurial activity in the Euregion and strengthen the cross-border interactions of the industrial/academic partners on a sustainable basis. This will provide jobs for local talent and increase the long-term economics of the Euregio.
Why will this work?
The strength of our program is twofold. (1) The platform offers a comprehensive educational lipidomics program for Master and PhD students. Projects will be established, in which students will rotate between the academic, industrial and SME partners, acquiring the complementary experience, knowhow and deploying the infrastructure of the partners. These projects will strengthen cross-border interactions/collaborations and will lead to intraregional fertilization in science, technology and exploitation of innovations. (2) Building on existing fragile partnerships, EURLIPID provides an innovative platform for new cross-border collaborations. The envisioned merger of complementary state-of-the-art infrastructure and expertise and exchange of scientists, ideas and resources in Lipidomics, will lead to profound scale-up. This critical mass (Lipid Valley) is a requisite for true innovation that will yield unprecedented spinoff for the local Health, Food and Biomedical sector. Altogether, the EURLIPID platform will develop into a Euregional umbrella for educational, technological and innovational activities in Lipidomics. These academic and entrepreneurial activities will be fueled and sustained by the locally available concentration of highly trained top-experts in lipid technology and medicine, creating a unique and viable knowledge economy in the Euregio.

Les lipides jouent de plus un rôle majeur dans le fonctionnement et la tolérance des biomatériaux. EURLIPIDS vise à mettre en place un enseignement transfrontalier, une plate-forme technologique et de l’innovation pour lutter contre ce problème de santé numéro un. Cela formera la "Lipid Valley", environnement attractif pour les talents locaux, principalement scientifiques et les PME spécialisées PME, stimulant l'économie locale.
Pourquoi ce projet?
Les lipides (composés apparentés aux matières grasses, comme le cholesterol et les oméga-3) sont cruciaux dans les maladies du cœur (infarctus) et du cerveau (Alzheimer), le cancer et la sénescence. Ces maladies compte pour la mortalité de plus de 80%, en particulier dans l'Euregio qui présente un faible niveau socio-économique et une forte proportion de personnes âgées (environ 25% plus élevé que dans d’autres regions). Les lipides jouent un rôle essentiel dans la tolérance de biomatériaux et donc de leur fonctionnalité. L’étude des lipides adhérants est cruciale pour développer des matériaux biocompatibles performants. Les percées technologiques récentes permettent d'étudier et de valoriser les connaissances des lipides dans les maladies et de leur interaction avec des biomatériaux.
L'Euregio dispose de centres académiques et industriels exceptionnels, réunis dans une plate-forme technologique unique en science des lipides (lipidomique). De l’échange de personnes (chercheurs, étudiants) et la connexion entre le savoir-faire et des infrastructures émergera une plate-forme d'excellence eurégional pour l'éducation transfrontalière et le développement de technologies innovantes. La plate-forme hébergera l'expertise et la masse critique pour générer de l'innovation sans précédent et servira de pépinière et d'accélérateur pour les PME locales. De part sa reconnaissance mondiale, la plate-forme renforcera leur compétitivité, permettant à une nouvelle génération d'experts de trouver un emploi. Cette evolution conduira au developpement de nouveaux outils diagnostiques et thérapeutiques ciblant les lipides nuisibles, et de nouveaux matériaux biomédicaux, pénétrant une niche unique du marché de valeur socio-économique incroyable, améliorant progressivement et durablement la situation économique de l'Euregio.

Pourquoi ce travail?
La force de notre programme est double: (1) La plate-forme offre un programme de formation complète en lipidomique aux étudiants en Master et en doctorat. Les projets seront mis en place, dans le but de permettre aux élèves de transiter entre les partenaires académiques, industriels et PME, leur perttant d'acquerir des expériences complémentaires, du savoir-faire et de déployer les infrastructures des partenaires. Ces projets renforceront les interactions/collaborations transfrontalières et conduiront à une fertilisation intrarégionale en science 2) Sur la base des partenariats existants, EURLIPIDS fournit une plate-forme innovante pour de nouvelles collaborations transfrontalières. La fusion envisagée des infrastructures ultra-performantes complémentaires, de l'expertise et de l'échange de scientifiques, d'idées et de ressources en Lipidomique, conduira à une amplification des résultats et innovations. La masse critique de la Lipid Valley est une condition nécessaire pour atteindre une véritable innovation qui donnera des retombées sans précédent pour la santé, l’alimentation et le secteur biomedical locaux. Les activités seront alimentées et soutenues par la disponibilité locale des meilleurs-experts hautement qualifiés dans la technologie des lipides et de la médecine.

Expected Results (EN): RI2 Proportion of innovative enterprises that cooperates with enterprises and knowldge institutions.
Expected Outputs (DE): An EURLIPIDS ist eine große Zahl innovativer Unternehmen beteiligt, die mit bestehenden Unternehmen und Forschungsinstitute zusammenarbeiten werden. Drei Start-up-Unternehmen sind darüber hinaus als Drittpartner an dem Projekt beteiligt.
1) Qynion als Drittpartner beteiligt, da diese KMU eine innovative “Dried Blood Spot”-Technologie entwickelt habe, die eines der Hauptprobleme der quantitative Analyse löst (Stichwort „Hämatokrit-Effekt“).
2) Eyegle wird Systeme zur kontinuierlichen Wirkstoff-Freisetzung optimieren und die Vermarktung eines Produktes vorantreiben, das hinter dem Augenlid platziert Wirkstoffe freisetzen werden kann.
3) Cytomine entwickeln und vermarkten Software-Tools. Insbesondere Visualisierungstools, die hochkomplexe Rohdaten in verständliche Informationen übersetzen, was im besonderen für komplexe, mehrdimensionale Daten zwingend notwendig ist.
Neben diesen Start-ups, sind KMUs als Partner beteiligt neue Methoden zu entwickeln, neu entwickeltes Wissen zu vermarkten.
Darüberhinaus sind folgende KMU und Industriepartner an dem Projekt beteiligt:
1.) DBSL wird Methoden zur Biomarkeranalyse mittel chromatographischen und massenspektrometrischen Techniken entwickeln. Die Methodenentwicklung basiert auf Erfahrungen, die bei der Entwicklung “Dried Blood Spot”-Technologie erzielt worden sind.
2.) Da Vinci LS entwickelnt ein mobilea Massenspektrometer, das als eines „Point of Care“-Instrument eingesetzt werden soll.. DVLS ist Lead Partner eines H2020 SME + Anruf (Chemsnif) und beteiligt sich an EURLIPIDS als „Point of Care“-Anwendunger.
3.) Zentech wird im Rahmen des Projekt Kits für definierte Biomarker entwickeln. Dieser Partner wird im besonderen eine wesentliche Funktion bei der Vermarktung des Endprodukts spielen.
4.) DSM Resolve ist ein High-End-Industrie-Partner und verfügt über direkten Zugang zu einer breiten und starken Infrastruktur. Die Firma wird sowohl als wissenschaftlicher Partner in EURLIPIDS eingebunden sein, als auch als technologischer Partner die Ergebnisse des Projekt in die Anwendung bringen.

Three startups (participating in the project as 3rd parties) are involved.
1) The project has involved Qynion as a 3rd party, as they have a new dried bloodspot card, which solves one of the major problems for quantitative analysis (i.e. the hematocrit effect).
2) Eyegle will further optimize and commercialization of an drug release device, which can be placed behind the eye lid
3) Cytomine will develop and commercialize new software tools. Especially visualization tools, which translate highly complex raw data to understandable information is crucial if high end and multidimensional data is generated
Besides these startups, SME’s are involved as partners to develop new tools to commercialize new developed knowledge.
1) Based on academic results DBSL and Zentech will develop new methodologies, using target analysis with Liquid Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry to assess lipid related biomarkers for health and disease. Such methods will be developed to measure these biomarkers in a single drop of dried blood. Sampling of a single blood drop by a simple finger prick is patient friendly and will become the future.
2) Da Vinci LS is working on a mobile mass spectrometer, which can be used as of a point of Care instrument. DVLS is lead partner of an H2020 SME+ call (Chemsnif) and participates in this project to valorize point of care applications (within their project)
3) Zentech is involved as they are specialized in developing of kits to determine specific biomarkers. They will play an important role in commercializing the final product.
DSM Resolve is a high-end industrial partner and has direct access to a broad and strong infrastructure. They will act as a knowledge institute, but will also use the outcome to bring new applications and work flows towards enabling technology.

La valorisation du projet est un objectif important.
Trois startups sont impliquées en tat que tiers.
1) Le projet implique Qynion, car ils ont une nouvelle méthode de stockage d’échantillons sanguins séchés, ce qui résout un des problèmes majeurs pour l'analyse quantitative (à savoir l'effet du taux d'hématocrite).
2) Eyegle va optimiser et commercialiser un dispositif de libération de médicament, qui peut être placé derrière la paupière.
3) Cytomine va développer et commercialiser de nouveaux outils logiciels. Surtout des outils de visualisation, qui traduisent des données brutes très complexes en information compréhensible.
Outre ces start-up, des PME sont impliquées en tant que partenaires pour développer de nouveaux outils pour commercialiser de nouvelles connaissances développées.
1) Sur la base des résultats de la recherche DBSL et Zentech développeront de nouvelles méthodologies, en utilisant une analyse de composés ciblés (biomarqueurs) grâce à la chromatographie liquide et la spectrométrie de masse. Ces méthodes seront développées pour mesurer ces biomarqueurs sur une seule goutte de sang séché. L'échantillonnage d'une seule goutte de sang par une piqûre au doigt est peu contraignante pour le patient connaît un essort important.
2) Da Vinci LS travaille sur un spectromètre de masse mobile, qui peut être utilisé comme un d'instrument de soins sur site. DVLS est partenaire principal d'un appel H2020 PME + (Chemsnif) et participe à ce projet pour valoriser les techniques d'applications de soins proches du patient.
3) Zentech est impliqué comme spécialistes dans le développement international de kits pour déterminer des biomarqueurs spécifiques. Ils joueront un rôle important dans la commercialisation du produit final.
DSM Resolve est un partenaire industriel haut de gamme et a un accès direct à une infrastructure large et forte. Ils agiront comme un institut de connaissances, mais aussi afin d’utiliser les résultats pour apporter de nouvelles applications et de protocoles de travail tournés vers l’application de la technologie.
