Moorböden im nördlichen Halbrund enthalten ca 33% des Kohlenstoffes (C) im Boden, obwohl sie nur 3-5% der totalen Bodenfläche beträgen. Viele Moorgebiete sind geschädigt und stossen eher C aus als das sie es aufnehmen. Der weltweite Treibhausgasausstoß von organische Böden ist ca 1.600 MT CO2 eq/J (2 Mal die totale Luftfahrt). In NWE ist dies ca 150 MT/J, mehr als der jährliche Ausstoß Belgiens. Diese Schätzungen sind aber nicht adäquat und es fehlt an effektive Strategien und Methoden um dies entgegen zu wirken und Besserung zu befördern. Komplizierter Landbesitz macht die Situation schwieriger und beschränkt die Replikation und Übertragbarkeit von effektiven Verwaltungsmaßnahmen. Care-Peat wird durch innovative Technologien und Zusammenarbeit nachweisen das eine Netto-emissionsreduktion machbar ist. In Care-Peat arbeiten Naturorganisationen zusammen mit Grundbesitzer um das Potential an C-gewinn mittels Pilots von 10-250 ha nach zu weisen. 5 wissenschaftliche Institute aus 3 Länder arbeiten zusammen um neue Meßmethoden zu entwikkeln und testen für bessere C-flux Messungen in Moorgebiete, und um das Potential an C-Speicherung einsichtich zu machen. Das Projekt arbeitet auch zusammen mit innovative Unternehmen, und wird Partnerschaften entwikkeln mit lokal-regionale Interessenten um den Impakt von den Pilots zu vergrößern und sozialökonomische Vorteile zu maximalisieren. Getestete und validierte Methoden werden weitergeleitet in ganz NWE, damit andere Verwaltungsorganisationen die besten Massnahmen nehmen können. Die (sub)Partner, die viele Moorgebiete verwalten, bieten eine große Perspektive für Restauration in andere Gebiete, mit Vorteile für sowohl die Natur als die EU-C-politik. Care-Peat wird intensiv Kontakte unterhalten mit CConnects-partner um Auswechslung, Zusammenarbeit und Verbreitung zu maximalisieren. Effekt der Pilots ist eine C-reduktion von 7800 Tonnen/J nach Ablauf, von 0,14 MT/J nach 5 und von 1,4 MT/J nach 10 Jahren in NWE-naturgebiete.

Les tourbières de l’Hémisphère Nord représentent 3-5% des terres émergées mais renferment ~33% du carbone (C) du sol. Nombre de ces tourbières est dégradé et fonctionne en source de C au lieu de puits de C. Les émissions annuelles de GES par les sols organiques drainés sont de ~1600 MT eq CO2., le double de celles de l’aéronautique. Dans l’ENO ~150 MT/an sont émis soit plus que les émissions de la Belgique. Pourtant, les estimations des émissions de GES par les tourbières dégradées ne sont pas correctement établies et les stratégies/méthodes manquent pour lutter contre la dégradation et promouvoir la restauration. Localement, la nature de propriété foncière complique la situation et limite la reproductibilité et le transfert d’une gestion alternative efficace des tourbières. Care-Peat développera des technologies innovantes de restauration et des partenariats appropriés afin de diminuer les émissions de GES dans l’ENO.Au sein de Care-Peat, un partenariat étroit est établi entre organisations naturalistes et propriétaires de sites pilote de 10 à 250 ha. De plus, 5 instituts de recherche de 3 pays développeront et testeront dans ces pilotes de nouvelles techniques pour améliorer l’évaluation des émissions de C et cibler le potentiel de réduction du C dans ces régions. Le projet inclut des entreprises innovantes dans le domaine de la restauration et un partenariat avec des acteurs locaux/régionaux afin d’accroitre l’impact des pilotes et optimiser les avantages socio-économiques. Les méthodes testées et validées seront transférées à des partenaires qui gèrent d’autres sites dans l’ENO afin de cibler les mesures appropriées de politique de gestion de la biodiversité et de réduction des émissions de C. Un lien étroit avec CConnects permettra d’optimiser les échanges, la coopération et la dissémination. En fin de projet, le gain de C est estimé à 7800 T/an sur les pilotes, 0.14 MT/an après 5 ans et 1.4 MT/an après 10 ans sur d’autres sites naturels de l’ENO.

Northern hemisphere peatland soils contain ~33% of global soil carbon, while accounting for only 3-5% of total land area. Many of these peatlands are degraded and emit rather than store carbon. Global annual GHG emissions from drained organic soils are ~1,600 MT CO2 eq., twice that from aviation. In NWE this is ~150 MT/year, more than Belgium’s emissions. Yet emission estimates from degraded peatlands are inadequate and we lack effective strategies and methods to combat degradation and promote recovery. Regional differences in land ownership complicate the situation and limit the replicability and transferability of effective alternative management of peatlands. Care-Peat will demonstrate innovative technologies and partnerships that achieve net emissions savings from novel restoration and accounting techniques in NWE.Within Care-Peat, nature organisations work with landowner groups to demonstrate carbon savings potential using pilots ranging from 10 to 250 ha. Five knowledge institutes from 3 countries work together to develop and test new techniques for improved peatland carbon assessment and accounting to highlight the region’s natural potential for significant carbon reduction. The project works with innovative companies in the field of restoration and develops partnerships with local and regional stakeholders to increase the impact of pilots and maximize socio-economic benefits. Methods tested and validated will be transferred and replicated to users across NWE to determine the most appropriate management measures. Partners, who manage additional peatlands, will facilitate further restorations after project end to benefit both biodiversity and carbon reduction policies. The project will continuously liaise with our CConnects partners to maximise exchange, cooperation and dissemination. The effect of pilots at project end is a C reduction of 7,800 tonnes/year, after 5 years 0.14 MT/y and after 10 years 1.4 MT/y across other NWE nature reserves.

Expected Outputs (EN): Currently C-losses on 5 pilot sites (in total approx. 630 ha) together is about 2,950 tonnes of CO2-eq/year. This figure is based on both assumptions from comparable sites and measurements from specific pilot sites.
