Project - Connectivity among Mediterranean fishery stakeholders and scientists resolves connectivity of fishery populations

Description (EN): In this era of fast global change, defining connectivity and adaptive potential of exploited marine stocks while estimating social impacts of change to the livelihood of those who directly exploit the resource are challenging but key requirements towards sustainability of fisheries. Yet, these three levels of information are not captured by traditional management practices: boundaries of stocks are perceived as static, stocks are considered as non-evolving units, and local stakeholders are seldom accounted for at the decision-making level. Here, we create a Mediterranean-based network that includes local stakeholders, social scientists and fisheries scientists, to deliver a framework that will refine the efficiency of fisheries management. The project includes cutting edge genomics techniques - that provide high resolution insights in the connectivity and adaptation - and local stakeholder involvement through all the phases of the framework - to promote the capacity building and knowledge transfer between fishermen and scientists. The concept will be backed-up by a strong social component that will act as a vehicle to bridge and disseminate. This bottom-up approach to fisheries management will permit identification of fishery areas that are critical to preserve, both from a scientific and from a social perspective (local populations), extensively contributing to the sustainability of Mediterranean fisheries.
Description: En cette ère de changement global, une définition de la connectivité et du potentiel d'adaptation des stocks marins exploités ainsi qu’une estimation des impacts sociaux dû au changement de la subsistance de ceux qui explorent directement ces ressource sont difficiles, mais nécessaires. Pourtant, ces trois niveaux d'information ne sont pas pris en compte par des pratiques de gestion traditionnelles: les limites des stocks sont perçus comme statiques, les stocks sont considérés comme des unités non-évolutives, et les parties prenantes locales sont rarement comptabilisés au niveau de la prise de décision. Ici, nous créons un réseau basé sur la Méditerranée qui inclut les parties prenantes locales, les sociologues et les scientifiques de la pêche, pour fournir un cadre qui permettra d'affiner l'efficacité de la gestion des pêches. Le projet comprend des technique de pointe de génomique - qui fournissent un aperçu de qualité en haute définition sur la connectivité et l'adaptation - et l'implication des parties prenantes locales à travers toutes les phases du cadre - pour promouvoir le renforcement des capacités et le transfert de connaissances entre les pêcheurs et les scientifiques - superposés sur une forte composante sociale comme véhicule de diffusion. Cette approche permettra d'identifier les zones de pêche essentielles a préserver, à la fois à partir d'un point de vue scientifique et social, pour contribuer à la durabilité de la pêche en Méditerranée.
Expected Results (EN): 1 Network establishment : The establishment of a network will occur at two levels. The first will be between the different scientific institutions involved in the project. This project incorporates fisheries scientists, social scientists, and evolutionary geneticists. This broad range of expertise will not only strengthen the overall outcome of the project but also raise awareness for transdisciplinarity as capacity building tool. The second level refers to the connection between local stakeholders and scientists. The transfer of scientific and native knowledge between those actors and joint interpretation of the project outcomes - based on transdisciplinarity - will promote a close cooperation that is expected to be maintained and expanded after the conclusion of the study. The transnational and transdisciplinary nature of the network enables to study new tactics and strategies of designing bottom up approaches considering local specific knowledge in the common framework.1 Network establishment : The establishment of a network will occur at two levels. The transnational and transdisciplinary nature of the network enables to study new tactics and strategies of designing bottom up approaches considering local specific knowledge in the common framework.2 Framework study : Development of a framework to improve the sustainability of fishery resources based on the implementation of cutting edge evolutionary-based knowledge and native knowledge of fishing communities. This framework and platform build could be implemented in each particular case study to enhance the knowledge on biology of fishery species and improve designation of fishery protected areas that relate both to scientific and native knowledge. The variability of Mediterranean fishing communities at the fine geographic scale, together with the high biodiversity of marine species suggests that each area should have specialized management plan. This project delivers a framework that couples the acquisition of high resolution information on exploited species (stock definition and adaptive potential) together with knowledge of local fishermen communities.
