Project - Coastal areas sustainable tourism water management in the Mediterranean

Description

Description (EN): CASTWATER is the first MED project to support sustainable tourism policies & practices on water efficiency in coastal areas. The transnational challenge is to reduce the impact of tourism activities on environmental heritage and to improve management of water resources. The project's overall objective is to support sustainable tourism water management in Med coastal areas, by improving the monitoring and assessment of the water sustainability performance of the tourism sector. CASTWATER follows a studying, testing and transferring approach of transnational cooperation, involving public authorities, tourism enterprises, and relevant agencies and stakeholders. Main outputs are: 1. Promotion of widespead uptake of water sustainability indicators & evaluation criteria to measure the tourism sector performance in water efficiency. 2. Development, validation, pilot testing and evaluation of an online tool for SMEs to monitor, compare and self-assess water efficiency status & efforts, and for public authorities to identify issues, and assess the overall situation of their territories. 3. Transferable learning & knowledge resources, and local workshops for public authorities staff on sustainable tourism water management. 4. Transferability and action plans for public authorities to support the policy integration of sustainable tourism water management approaches into policies and measures, and for enterprises to integrate best practices in their day to day operations.
Expected Results (EN): 1 Enhanced capacity of public authorities to monitor and assess the territorial tourism water sustainability : DESCRIPTION OF RESULT: On completion of the project's activities, public authorities in the partnership coastal areas will achieve enhanced capacity in monitoring & measuring systematically and effectively the level of water sustainability of tourism activities in their areas, with the aim to improve water efficiency, supporting the minimisation of hydrological stress linked to tourism activities in the territories concerned. CONTRIBUTION TO PROGRAMME RESULT INDICATOR: Studying activities of the project (needs analysis, impact analysis, policy integration potential study, GPs collection, evaluation criteria), as well as the on-line tool for SMEs to monitor sustainable tourism water management in the partnership areas will address the need for improving knowledge, identifying data gaps and improving coherence and comparability of coastal tourism statistics & information. These results will directly support monitoring & measuring the level of tourism sustainability in MED coastal regions. It is expected that 100 public authorities will improve their capacity to monitor & support tourism water sustainability in the partnership coastal areas the first year after the project's implementation.1 Enhanced capacity of public authorities to monitor and assess the territorial tourism water sustainability : DESCRIPTION OF RESULT On completion of the project's activities, public authorities in the partnership coastal areas will achieve enhanced capacity in monitoring & measuring systematically and effectively the level of water sustainability of tourism activities in their areas, with the aim to improve water efficiency, supporting the minimisation of hydrological stress linked to tourism activities in the territories concerned. CONTRIBUTION TO PROGRAMME RESULT INDICATOR: The project will develop and test sustainability indicators, evaluation criteria and a performance monitoring and self assessment online tool addressed directly to SMEs, to monitor, compare & grade performance on sustainable tourism water management. In addition, the learning and knowledge resources & policy workshops will support public bodies to promote awareness & mobilise territorial SMEs to improve individually and collectively their sustainable tourism water management performance. It is expected that more than 1000 enterprises in the tourism sector will improve their efforts to self assess their water sustainability in the first year after the project's implementation, by a) monitoring their water sustainability efforts, and b) adopting water efficiency measures, solutions and relevant staff training.3 Improved knowledge and policy transfer capacity of public authorities to integrate sustainable tourism water management into territorial plans.
