What do Olympus, Etna and Canigó have in common? They are all coastal Mediterranean mountains, emblematic for their history, landscape and identity. Today, 9 coastal mountains have joined the network of Emblematic Mediterranean Mountains: Canigò and Sainte Victoire (France), Etna and Gran Sasso (Italy), Olympus and Ida (Greece), Pedra Forca and Serra de Tramuntana (Spain) and Cikà (Albania). The objective of the EMbleMatiC project is to create and test a new and radically different tourism offer based on the features of these mountains and to create an alternative to the traditional holiday on the beach. This project goes even further. It is not concerned with creating a generic tourism product, but rather with piloting a new way of conceiving tourism: one which combines the development and protection of natural environments, by applying a more sustainable and responsible management of tourism flows and a greater involvement of inhabitants and local actors. This project will contribute to re-balance tourist flows between the sea and the mountain, to extend the seasonality and to improve economic returns for the territories. Several experiments will lead the territories toward the definition of an umbrella brand based on a sustainable and responsible tourism approach. Should the evaluation prove positive, more than fifteen other mountains from the Med basin could join the network together with their local authorities in order to evolve their tourism policies.

Quel est le point commun entre l’Olympe, l’Etna ou le Canigò ? Ce sont des montagnes côtières de la Méditerranée, emblématiques par leur histoire, leur paysage et leur identité. Aujourd’hui 9 montagnes côtières ont rejoint le réseau des Montagnes emblématiques de la Méditerranée : Canigò & Sainte Victoire (Fra), Etna & Gran Sasso (Ita), Olympe & Ida (Grè), Pedra Forca & Serra de Tramuntana (Esp) et Cikà (Albanie). L’objectif du projet EMbleMatiC est de mettre en place et de tester une nouvelle offre touristique radicalement différenciante, basée sur les particularités de ces montagnes créant une alternative au traditionnel séjour de plage. Mais le projet va encore plus loin. Il ne s’agit pas de créer un produit touristique hors sol mais d’expérimenter une nouvelle manière de concevoir le tourisme, alliant la valorisation et la préservation des milieux naturels, par une gestion plus durable et responsable de la fréquentation touristique et une implication de la population et des acteurs locaux. Ce projet contribuera à rééquilibrer les flux entre plage et montagne, à étendre la saisonnalité et améliorer les retombées économiques pour les territoires. Les différentes expérimentations amèneront ces territoires à définir une marque ombrelle commune basée sur une approche durable et responsable du tourisme. Si l’évaluation se révèle positive, une quinzaine d’autres montagnes du bassin méditerranéen pourraient rejoindre le réseau et faire évoluer leur politique touristique.

Achievements (EN):

The transnational cooperation project EMbleMatiC is born from a match between the priority axis 3.1 of Interreg Med programme and the pursued objectives of the EMM Network (Emblematic Mediterranean Mountains)The main pursued outcome is to qualify Emblematic Mediterranean Mountains as coastal destinations of excellence.10 partners from 5 countries are working together to test a new form of sustainable tourism located in the coastal hinterland area by creating:- an eco-itinerary on each of the 9 territories inspired by the identarian singularities (after completing an in depth study of their emblematic dimension)- an umbrella brand for international marketing (common communication actions and supports).With the beginning of this new programming period , the past 8 months have allowed the partnership to set-up a framework that is understood and used by all.Many hurdles have been successfully overcome:- EU funding delays for some partners- Completion of contracting documents- Recruitment of external experts to assist the project (moderators of transnational meeting committees, contractor for our study, first level controller to audit our accounts...)Many deliverables of reference have been successfully released after some intense co-production:For the project management:- Common guideline for the governance of the partnership- Practical manual for financial and administrative rules- Evaluation plan with a toolbox of all templates for monitoring and reporting toolsFor the project communication:- Communication manual- Creation and moderation of social network (facebook page and twitter account)For the project study:- Contractor recruited for our study phaseDespite a time-schedule moved forward by two months by the managing authority and some delays in the availability of some programme tools (web-platform, manuals, forms..) the project planned activities are on schedule for this first period. The LP and work package coordinators have also successfully completed periodical reporting and monitoring activities.Most importantly this ambitious parnership is gradually fostering fruitful relationships despite obvious differences.The two transnational meetings organised in January and June have greatly contributed to reaching common understanding, decisions and contributions.The imminent implementation of participative workshops and case studies should provide the opportunity to finally involve stakeholders, associated partners.
