Description (EN):

Tourism illustrates an important source of revenues and employment in the MED area. At the same time it implicates enormous negative impacts for nature and society. Some years ago, the concept of ecotourism appeared. What does this imply for the MED area? Unfortunately not much. Despite increasing international efforts to create harmonized concepts, agreed definitions and quality standards are missing in the MED area. Due to the lack of coherent planning and monitoring and seriously perceived promotion, ecotourism in the MED does not yet constitute a real alternative. This could be changed through a governance system for ecotourism in protected areas, e.g. constituted through a destination management organisation (DMO). Such DMO could harmonize quality standards and tools to monitor compliance, propose attractive ecotourism offers promoted through a lasting brand. This is where the project DestiMED comes into play aiming to build pre-conditions for a DMO: Firstly, it will further develop and test standards, offers and monitoring tools - forming the quality scheme of a future DMO. It will build on results of the MEET project that created and tested planning and marketing approaches. These will be enriched by a monitoring tool. The offers and tools developed will subsequently be tested in pilot actions involving local actors as well as the local community. In parallel, a network (based on the MEET network) will serve as idea-smithy to further shape the DMO.

Le tourisme constitue une source importante de revenus et d'emploi dans la zone MED. En même temps, il implique d'énormes impacts négatifs pour sa nature et société. Il y a quelques années, le concept de l'écotourisme est apparu. Qu'est-ce que cela implique pour la région MED ? Malheureusement pas beaucoup. Malgré l'intensification d'efforts internationaux visant à créer des concepts harmonisés, des normes de qualité conjoints manquent dans la région MED. En raison de l'absence d'une planification et suivi cohérentes ainsi qu'une promotion sérieuse, l'écotourisme ne constitue pas une véritable alternative. Cela pourrait être changé par un système de gouvernance pour l'écotourisme dans les aires protégées, par exemple constituée par une organisation de gestion des destinations (DMO). Le DMO pourrait harmoniser les normes de qualité et les outils de suivi, proposer des offres attractives promus par une marque stable. Le projet DestiMED y entre en jeu visant à construire les conditions préalables: Tout d'abord, il développe davantage et teste des normes, des offres et des outils de suivi (créant le schéma de qualité). Il se fonde sur les résultats du projet MEET qui a créé et testé des approches de planification et de marketing. Ceux-ci seront enrichis par l'outil de suivi. Ensuite, ce schéma développé sera testé par des actions pilotes impliquant des acteurs locaux ainsi que la communauté locale. Le réseau servira comme un ateliler de future pour modéler le DMO.

Achievements (EN):

During the January-June 2019 period, and as the project is approaching its end, the main focus of the partnership started to shift from Testing to WP Transferring activities. All PPs efforts were therefore aimed at progressing towards the completion of testing-related activities, and at starting and implementing transferring activities.Under WP1, partners continued to cooperate to ensure coordination of activities as well as periodic technical and financial reporting of progress. In addition to periodic coordination calls, PPs representatives gathered for a technical and PSC meeting in June in Barcelona (held along the Sustainable Tourism Convention organized by HP).Within WP2, the whole partnership kept active, under the coordination of PP IUCN, in communicating the project accomplishments to external audiences and to the MED community. DestiMED hosted a side event during Sustainable Tourism HP final event held in Barcelona, and had the chance to share many of the project´s concrete deliverables and take-aways. The project video was launched in February 2019 and reached quite a large audience through the outreach efforts of project partners. The partnership also participated in one external tourism promotion event, such as ITB in Berlin.Within WP3, the 2nd and last round of tests of the pilot ecotourism packages was carried out in May-June in 4 pilot PAs (the 2 Albanians and the 2 of Lazio Region). As for previous rounds, feedback from testers was collected by means of a structured questionnaire. Results are being assessed by PPs. Based on results of this test, it will be possible to have the Ecological Footprint balance (1st vs 2nd test) calculated for all the 13 destinations targeted by pilot actions. Data from tests will also be exploited to develop the Ecological Footprint Calculator (Deliv 3. 3.4). A 3rd additional regional training for Local Ecotourism Clusters representatives was also organized and implemented in April in Albania. Activities of WP4 intensified in this reporting semester. Several dissemination and transferability events (Act. 4.3) took place in particular in Spain (IUCN Med), Greece (WWF Med), Croatia (WWF Adria) and Italy (Federparchi and Lazio Region). Concerning the regional event to be held by the end of the project (Act. 4. 4.), partners finally agreed on the date and scope of the event, and on main subdivision of tasks and responsibilities. Preparatory activities were expected to become more intensive starting from July.
