Many Mediterranean Marine Protected Areas (MPA) affirm that Marine Litter (ML) represents one of the major threats for the protection of biodiversity and marine ecosystems and confirmed the lack of knowledge and skills on how to effectively tackle this issue at their level. ML is a priority of the Euro-Mediterranean policies for sustainable development. Recently, many actions have been implemented but these policy commitments still need to be translated into the MPA context. ACT4LITTER will aim at reviewing the most promising proposed measures and select the ones that could be implemented in the MPA , considering particularly the ecosystem services. The selection of measures will result in the development of MPA-specific action plans whose implementation could be the object of a future project. In addition, those plans will be complemented, by a realistic and operational governance plan at transnational level. MPA stakeholders and key experts of ML value chain will be involved all through the process in order to validate the outputs together. The action plans will have a strong focus on preventive measures, using circular economy and sustainable consumption and production approaches. The issue of ML is global but MPAs are directly affected by its increasing amount, restraining highly the achievement of the conservation goals.

Beaucoup d’aires marines protégées Méditerranéennes (AMP) affirment que les déchets marins (DM) représentent l'une des principales menaces pour la protection de la biodiversité et des écosystèmes marins et ont confirmé le manque de connaissances et de compétences sur la façon de lutter efficacement contre ce problème à leur niveau. La question des DM est une priorité des politiques euro-méditerranéennes pour le développement durable. Récemment, de nombreuses actions ont été développées, mais les engagements politiques doivent encore être mis en application dans le contexte des AMP. ACT4LITTER visera à examiner les mesures existantes les plus prometteuses et sélectionner celles qui pourraient être utilisées par les AMP, en considérant particulièrement les services écosystémiques. Le choix des mesures se traduira par l'élaboration de plans d'action spécifiques aux AMP, dont la mise en œuvre pourrait être l'objet d'un futur projet. De plus, ces plans seront complétés par un plan de gouvernance réaliste et opérationnel au niveau transnational. Les AMP et les experts clés sur les DM seront impliqués tout au long du processus afin de valider les résultats ensemble. Les plans d'action auront un fort accent sur les mesures préventives, basés sur l’économie circulaire et de la consommation et la production durables. La question des DM est mondiale, mais les AMP sont directement touchées par sa quantité croissante, limitant fortement la réalisation des objectifs de conservation.
