La Méditerranée est menacée à cause de la pratique inappropriée et le développement associé au tourisme en masse. En conséquence, les zones de forte attraction touristique dans les villes côtières sont en train d’atteindre leur capacité de charge, en ayant un impact direct sur l’environnement urbain ainsi que sur des éléments qui sont définis par la Culture MED. En ce contexte, ALTER ECO met en valeur le développement durable du tourisme en promouvant l’Identité Méditerranée à travers la mise en œuvre de stratégies touristiques alternatives dans 6 pilotes co-désignés et mis en œuvre par les acteurs publics et privés. Le projet fournit l’opportunité de tester, dans les villes représentatives MED qui sont utilisées comme Laboratoire Vivant, les méthodologies et les outils qui ont surgi dans projets à impact élevé précédents dans le domaine du tourisme durable ou proposées par les acteurs principaux, avec l’objectif de parvenir à des stratégies touristiques holistiques et réalistes au niveau local et régional qui permettent la transférabilité sur le territoire MED. Les résultats du projet soutiendront les décideurs à prendre des décisions plus éclairées et intégrées pour la gouvernance et la gestion du tourisme dans la Méditerranée, et en même temps, ils permettront d'améliorer la coordination des actions entre les acteurs publics et privés en faveur de la mise en œuvre des stratégies soulevées afin de créer de nouvelles opportunités commerciales.

The Mediterranean is under threat due to the inappropriate practice and development associated with mass tourism.As a consequence areas of high tourist attraction in coastal cities are reaching their limit on carrying capacity, with a direct impact not only on the urban environment but on key elements that define MED Culture.In this context, ALTER ECO enhances the local sustainable development of tourism by promoting Mediterranean Identity through the implementation of alternative tourist strategies in 6 pilots co-designed and implemented by public and private stakeholders. The project provides the opportunity of testing, in representative MED cities, used as LIVING LAB, existing methodologies and tools arisen in previous high impact projects in the field of sustainable tourism or proposed by key stakeholders, with the aim of reaching holistic and realistic tourist strategies at local and regional level that allow transferability in the MED territory. Project results will support policy makers to make more informed and integrated decisions for the governance and management of tourism in the Mediterranean and at the same time will enhance the coordination of actions between public and private stakeholders towards the implementation of the raised strategies in order to create new business opportunities. ALTER ECO will contribute to improve knowledge and decision making capacities, including a better use of observation, monitoring and planning in the field of sustainable tourism.

Achievements (EN):

ALTER ECO is working on improving the balance between tourist attraction as a source of economic growth and the preservation of the classic values of the Mediterranean city as an example of sustainability, through the implementation of alternative tourist strategies in six pilots by the interested agents.Venice, Dubrovnik, Rhodes, Genoa, Comunitat Valenciana, and Málaga worked on reducing the concentration of human activities in hotspots, highlighting the value of MED identity and creating new business opportunities through a living lab methodology that tries to involve all the stakeholders. The partners have adapted the project philosophy depending on the diagnosis carried out of each destination, resulting in a great diversity of solutions proposed that will be easily transferred to other MED regions with similar characteristics. Partners learned from each other’s previous experience, working together to obtain better results, as for example in the field of technologies used in people flows monitoring and regarding possible methods to promote and protect local and Mediterranean identity. Until now, on the one hand, ALTER ECO consortium identified the most representative Mediterranean identity characteristics and the level of threat they face due to uncontrolled tourism activities and proposed a method for calculating the carrying capacity limit (CCL) in order to be able to link the threats the cities face with their proximity to the CCL. On the other hand, pilots implemented 15 measures in 7 destinations resulting in transferable actions that will be capitalized during the last phase of the project. The ultimate objective is to provide a validated methodological framework for the estimation of the CCL in touristic destinations and its relationship with the loss of the Mediterranean identity, in order to make better-informed decisions and provide strategic insights towards the proposal effective solutions.
