In het project LUMEN hebben 6 projectpartners het doel om aan te tonen dat waterstof en CO2, in combinatie met zonlicht, op een commercieel rendabele manier kunnen worden omgezet in synthetisch gas. Door de inzet van slimme katalysatoren en de samenwerking met bedrijven Ecosynth en Innosyn zal er eerst worden gewerkt aan een demonstrator op labschaal. Daarna volgt een praktijktest van het ontwikkelde concept tijdens de productie van fijnchemicaliën. Syngas wordt veel gebruikt in industriële productieprocessen. Voor de huidige productie van synthetisch gas en syngas is elektriciteit nodig. LUMEN probeert het gas rechtstreeks met behulp van zonlicht te produceren en zonder verdere tussenkomst van elektriciteit. Door deze verkorte route hoopt het project bij te kunnen dragen aan de energietransitie. De uitkomsten van het onderzoek kunnen interessant zijn voor de industrie, met name voor chemiebedrijven en materiaalproducten. Het onderzoek is een vervolgstap van eerder onderzoek dat werd verricht in het Interreg Vlaanderen-Nederland project “CO2 voor Energiesoplag”.

Description (EN):

Two major challenges that we face as a society are securing our future energy supply by switching from fossil fuels to sustainable energy sources, and reducing CO2 emissions. In LUMEN, knowledge institutions TNO, Hasselt University, IMEC and Zuyd Hogeschool want to tackle this issue jointly with SMEs/SMEs InnoSyn and EcoSynth by making use of sunlight as a sustainable energy source. Due to the fluctuations in the supply of energy from sustainable sources - after all the sun only shines during the day - a storage buffer will be needed for our future energy system. An example of such a storage buffer is hydrogen. The hydrogen making process already exists and is commercially available. However, hydrogen is problematic to use: large-scale storage is not safe, and we do not have a distribution system that is suitable for hydrogen. Construction of such a system is very expensive. Therefore, LUMEN will attempt to convert hydrogen with CO2 into natural gas (methane) or syngas. For this "photochemical" conversion, sunlight will directly serve as an energy source. The partnership will build a prototype on a lab scale to demonstrate the technical and economic feasibility of the conversion. In addition, LUMEN wants to demonstrate that the developed concept can also be used to produce fine chemicals, such as intermediates for medicines, in a safer and easier way. With the conversion of CO2 to natural gas, syngas, and chemicals, the project aims at alternatives to current production from oil and a reduction in CO2 emissions in the region. Through active knowledge exchange, LUMEN will make companies, research institutions, universities and colleges in the region aware of the social and commercial importance of this concept. In this way it offers commercial opportunities for involved companies in the value chain: material producers, equipment producers and chemical companies in the region.

In het project LUMEN hebben 6 projectpartners het doel om aan te tonen dat groene waterstof en CO2, in combinatie met zonlicht, op een commercieel rendabele manier kunnen worden omgezet in waardevolle en duurzame producten voor de chemische industrie en de energiesector. Het concept is eerst aangetoond in een batch proces op labschaal door middel van de photo-chemische conversie van CO2 naar aardgas (methaan) en syngas (CO, wat het startmateriaal is voor de synthese van vloeibare koolwaterstoffen als brandstof, zoals bijv. methanol). Daarnaast is binnen LUMEN een labschaal “mini-fabriek” ontwikkeld en gedemonstreerd voor continue productie, die met behulp van artificieel licht aantoont dat de door zonlicht aangedreven omzetting van CO2 met (groen) waterstof naar methaan en/of syngas technisch en economisch haalbaar is. Verder is er binnen LUMEN, in samenwerking met bedrijven Ecosynth en Innosyn, aangetoond dat het ontwikkelde concept ook kan worden vertaald om fijn-chemicaliën, zoals tussenproducten voor medicijnen, op een veilige en eenvoudige manier te produceren. De technologie-ontwikkeling binnen LUMEN adresseert de twee bovenstaande uitdagingen gelijktijdig: het aanleggen van een energieopslagbuffer, noodzakelijk om fluctuaties in het aanbod van energie uit duurzame bronnen zoals zon en wind te ondervangen, en gelijktijdig de reductie van CO2 uitstoot, gebruik makend van natuurlijk zonlicht als duurzame energiebron. De binnen het project ontwikkelde labschaal mini-fabriek zal in vervolgprojecten worden vertaald naar een integrale pilotschaal demonstrator gebruikmakend van natuurlijk zonlicht, en vervolgens een industrieel proces. Dit biedt zodoende commerciële kansen voor betrokken partijen in de waardeketen: materiaalproducenten (katalysatorproductie), equipment-producenten (reactorproductie) en chemiebedrijven. Verder zal dit de energietransitie en reductie van CO2 emissie versnellen, en bijdragen aan de realisatie van de op deze gebieden afgesproken doelstellingen.

Achievements (EN):

In the LUMEN project, 6 project partners have the goal to demonstrate that green hydrogen and CO2, in combination with sunlight, can be converted in a commercially profitable way into valuable and sustainable products for the chemical industry and the energy sector. The concept is first demonstrated in a batch process on a lab scale through the photo-chemical conversion of CO2 into natural gas (methane) and syngas (CO, which is the starting material for the synthesis of liquid hydrocarbons as fuel, such as methanol). In addition, within LUMEN developed and demonstrated a lab-scale “mini-factory” for continuous production, which uses artificial light to demonstrate that the sunlight-driven conversion of CO2 with (green) hydrogen to methane and/or syngas is technically and economically feasible. LUMEN, in collaboration with companies Ecosynth and Innosyn, demonstrated that the developed concept can also be translated to produce fine chemicals, such as drug intermediates, in a safe and simple way. The technology development within LUMEN addresses the two above challenges simultaneously: creating an energy storage buffer, necessary to overcome fluctuations in the supply of energy from sustainable sources such as sun and wind, and simultaneously reducing CO2 emissions, using natural sunlight as a sustainable energy source. The lab-scale mini-factory developed within the project will be translated in follow-up projects into an integral pilot-scale demonstrator using natural sunlight, and subsequently an industrial process. This therefore offers commercial opportunities for parties involved in the value chain: material producers (catalyst production), equipment producers (reactor production) and chemical companies. Furthermore, this will accelerate the energy transition and reduction of CO2 emissions, and contribute to the realization of the objectives agreed in these areas.
