Tourism is a major engine of economic development, but it also creates a burden difficult to bear among the inhabitants Mass tourism is promoted for destinations of great cultural, historical and heritage importance, some of them also classified as World Heritage sites by UNESCO. BODAH aims at improving cooperation, joint planning and at better managing conflicting interests to improve the management of two kind of cultural destinations that can benefit and be affected by tourism and the pressure of local citizens: Old-historical city centres and Sites of particular cultural or heritage interest. The project plans to take advantage of technology and innovation in management tools (Smart Cities), in particular, through the collection of existing - and generation of complementary - data (Big Data, Open Data, Internet of the Things, data provided through existing sensors, local systems or cameras, etc.). One of the key objectives is to develop new solutions to address social and public needs, contributing to create new alternative offers adapted to the interests of visitors to better distribute their crowd flows, as well as redistribute impacts (both, environmental and economic ones) on heritage sites, cities and monuments.

BODAH pretende reforçar um desenvolvimento sustentável mais holístico dos fluxos de turismo e cidadãos e das redistribuições de impactos socioeconómicos relacionados com o uso de dados e tecnologias inteligentes. O projeto pretende desenvolver novas ferramentas, soluções e conhecimentos em linha com as mudanças sectoriais atuais e as características dos destinos inteligentes, capazes de recolher, gerar, integrar e analisar informações e transformá-las em mudanças de comportamento e processos de tomada de decisão.

BODAH vise à renforcer un développement durable plus holistique de flux et la redistribution d’impacts socio-économiques grâce à l'utilisation de données et technologies intelligentes. Le projet prévoit de développer de nouveaux outils, solutions et connaissances en ligne avec les changements sectoriels actuels et les caractéristiques des destinations intelligentes, capables de collecter, générer, intégrer et analyser des informations et de les transformer en changements de comportement et en processus de décision.

Tourism is a major engine of economic development, but it also creates a burden difficult to bear among the inhabitants. Mass tourism is promoted for destinations of great cultural, historical and heritage importance, some of them also classified as World Heritage sites by UNESCO. BODAH aims at strengthening the sustainable development of tourism and citizens flows and socioeconomic impacts redistributions thanks to the use of data and smart technologies. The project is developing new tools, solutions and knowledge in line with the current sectoral changes and characteristics of smart destinations, able to transform information into behavior changes and decision making processes. The improvement of cooperation and joint planning to better manage conflicting interests will improve the management of two kinds of cultural destinations that can benefit, as well as be affected, by tourism and the pressure of local citizens: old-historical city centres and sites of particular cultural or heritage interest. BODAH takes advantage of technology and innovation in management tools (Smart Cities), for the collection of existing data from different sources and transform them into practical knowledge. The project has already managed to establish its own indicator system that determines which data should be measured and used for pilot schemes in four cities: Santiago de Compostela and San Sebastian in Spain, Pau in France, and Cork in Ireland. The main purpose of this indicator system is to determine what aspects need to be measured and assessed to develop suitable tourism and people flow management practices. Thus, new alternative offers can be created and adapted to the interests of visitors to better distribute their crowd flows, and redistribute impacts on these cultural destinations. The project also developed a pilot strategy to stimulate processes in tourism and heritage management, as well as a web based transnational platform to share data management services for public organisations managing tourism and heritage sites. "The Compostela Catering Association (Hotels and Restaurants) believes that BODAH, thanks to the monitoring and analysis of tourist flows in the city, and especially the Old Town, is very important for us, since it enables us to adapt our members’ services to such flows. It is also a significant project because it proves, with objective data, that Santiago does not have a problem with mass tourism in its public spaces”. Expected Results (EN):

First of all, the production of a Capitalization and Exploitation Charter and Action Plan will contribute to enhance the impacts of the project on regional levels through involvement of local and regional policy makers, stakeholders and enterprises, after the project life. It will focus on identifying a series of key activities and actions to be implemented by the partners from December 2021 onwards, to guarantee the future use and impact of the tools created in the framework of the project, and monitor their impact. In parallel, the Policy Toolkit will adapt the conclusions from the different pilot experiences and knowledge acquired into practical recommendations on how to incorporate Smart Data management in strategic planning processes. It will be a practical tool to transfer results for future uses.

Expected Outputs (EN):

• Production of a Charter and Action Plan, as well as a Policy Tool Kit and the organisation of networking events. • International benchmark on the use of Open and Big data for both, heritage/tourism and citizens management. • Setting of indicators, thresholds and protocol of data measurement. • Strategy to link BODAH results within Regional Smart Specialisation Strategies. • Open and Big data collection, measurement and gathering in 4 pilot sites. • Data Mining to create Data Analytics Reports, including living graphs and the analysis of people flows, uses and habits, as well as predictive analysis carried out by the technical partners. • Development of Flow Management Models on the basis of the data obtained and analysed in the 4 pilot sites. • Development of a pilot strategy to stimulate quadruple helix processes in tourism and heritage management. • Development and testing of a web based transnational platform to share data management services for public organisations managing tourism and heritage sites. • Development of a training tool and organisation of local events to transfer the results.
