Description (EN):

Historically, energy and water interactions (the nexus) have been considered on a regional or technology-by-technology basis. It is now required to follow an approach where deep knowledge of the nexus and the development of local policies, strategies and tools to reduce energy needs and/or promote renewable energy sources in the nexus should be profoundly addressed. EERES4WATER will enhance the institutional, technical and social framework to promote the direct use of renewable energy sources and energy efficiency in water cycle by influencing related policies and introduction of new processes and technologies. The overall objective is to provide Atlantic Area target stakeholders with the tools and instruments needed to overcome the Energy-Water nexus challenges and increase its utilization. Besides, providing policy recommendations and legal framework for policy makers and public administrators, developing innovative technological solutions, supporting tools (ICT tool for decision making and support services), establishing cooperation agreements between the academia and the private sector, and providing information and awareness about resource efficiency.

EERES4WATER irá potenciar a estrutura institucional, técnica e social para promoção do uso direto de fontes de energia renováveis e eficiência energética em políticas, processos e tecnologias relacionadas com o ciclo da água. Este projeto pretende levar o Espaço Atlântico para a vanguarda da sustentabilidade, impactando positivamente nas capacidades de produção das fontes de energia renováveis e nas estratégias e políticas de eficiência energética existentes. Na eficiência de recursos estes são aspetos fundamentais para o nexus energia-água.

Este proyecto pretende llevar el Espacio Atlántico a la vanguardia de la sostenibilidad, impactando positivamente en la capacidad de producción de fuentes de energía renovables y en las estratégias y politicas de eficiencia energética existentes. Estas son aspectos fundamentales para el binomio agua-energía.

Le projet EERES4WATER vise à améliorer le cadre institutionnel, technique et social afin de favoriser l'utilisation directe des sources d'enérgie renouvelable et d'efficacité énergétique dans les politiques, process et technologies liés au cycle de l'eau. Ce projet vise à placer l’Espace Atlantique au premier plan de la durabilité, en ayant un impact positif sur la capacité de production de sources d’énergie renouvelable et sur les stratégies et politiques d’efficacité énergétique existantes. Ce sont des aspects fondamentaux pour le binôme eau-énergie.

Achievements (EN):

In line with the priorities set out in the Research and Innovation Strategies for Smart Specialisation (RIS3), sustainable solutions are required for the technological advancement of the waterenergy nexus. Technological solutions should be adapted to the different scenarios that typically exist in the Atlantic Area, especially in coastal and inland areas. EERES4WATER is enhancing the institutional, technical and social framework to promote the direct use of renewable energy sources and energy efficiency in the water cycle by influencing related policies and introducing new technologies. The project partners are working on a bundle of technologies to make water management and energy related processes more efficient. Some of these technologies are low-cost wave-driven energy generation, wastewater decontamination and desalination systems powered by renewable energy, and pump used as a turbine. The project has developed a software application to predict water storage, pumping requirements, and variable water treatments operation, as well as an Artificial Intelligence model to predict faecal indicator organisms and detect poor water quality in real-time. The partners are working on an energy efficiency labelling standard for processes and facilities of the water cycle. This will allow policy makers to support more efficient installations and better decision making when investing in goods and services. Thanks to all the know-how generated, the partners have provided three transnational services on innovative energy and water technologies in the fields of desalination and renewable energy. These improvements will contribute to provide citizens with cheaper and more sustainable access to water in the Atlantic Area thanks to better local and regional policies and strategies, and the consolidation of new technologies. "In the Canary Islands region there is not much water. Low rainfall and a volcanic aquifer. The energy dependence of the water cycle is very high. The water used in the main islands is desalted water from the sea and complex pumping is required due to the orography and deep wells. Besides, the tourist pressure requires a high freshwater provision to accomplish the quality standard. The Canary Islands Government expects to bring to the islands some of these new technologies and results from EREES4WATER project and include them in the water cycle to reduce the huge dependence on the energy that currently exists on the waterenergy nexus in the region”. Expected Results (EN):

The expected impact is the unlocking of the Atlantic Area domestic resources and an improved sustainability of the current water cycle related processes and policies. An increase of 5% of renewable energy capacities installed is foreseen and increased adoption of energy efficiency patterns through the delivery of at least 5 new products to the market. EERES4WATER will enable more favourable conditions for the local renewable energy and energy-efficiency sectors, leading to a better positioning of the Atlantic Area in creation of new value-chains, strategies, jobs and subsequently regional growth.

Expected Outputs (EN):

At technical level, the project will focus on the direct use of RES (1. pilot actions on solar energy-driven water disinfection, use of energy storage in solar energy installations and RES-driven pumping station; 2. case-study and preparatory tests for wave-driven energy desalination in coastal areas; 3. Case-study on RES combination) and on improved energy-efficiency processes/technologies (1. pilot actions on water desalination; 2. case study on membrane distillation using industrial excess heat and implementation of microturbines to recover dissipated energy). At social level, open innovation strategies will deliver academia-business cooperation agreements.
