SEAFOOD-AGE tackles a common challenge in the Atlantic Area: an ageing population. Older adults often suffer from illness or disability with the subsequent socioeconomic implications. Healthy ageing requires a healthy diet, and seafood products provide essential nutrients not always accessible to older adults. SEAFOOD-AGE will exploit the maritime dimension of the Atlantic Area regions and will adopt circular economy concepts to generate ready-to-eat seafood for healthy ageing, produce novel eco-packaging and develop a smart label for better quality, safety and minimum food waste. With focus on the 65+adults' needs, the project will: - design sustainable, healthier, safer, high-quality ready-to-eat seafood products, - produce eco-innovative packages exploiting natural resources and by-products, - design smart predictive labels to aid retailers to reduce food waste , and to support ageing consumers to make better-informed ready-to-eat seafood choices, and - develop competences for innovation and accelerate the pace of embedding the circular economy principles into the seafood sector.

O envelhecimento saudável requer uma dieta benéfica e os produtos do mar fornecem nutrientes essenciais que nem sempre estão acessíveis às pessoas mais velhas. O projecto visa explorar a dimensão marítima das regiões do Espaço Atlântico e adoptar conceitos de economia circular para gerar marisco pronto a comer para um envelhecimento saudável, produzir novas embalagens ecológicas e desenvolver um rótulo inteligente para melhor qualidade, segurança e mínimo desperdício de alimentos.

El envejecimiento saludable requiere una dieta saludable y los alimentos marinos ofrecen nutrientes esenciales no siempre accesibles a las personas mayores. El proyecto explotará la dimensión marítima de las regiones del Espacio Atlántico y adoptará conceptos de economía circular para generar productos del mar listos para el consumo para un envejecimiento saludable, producir nuevos envases ecológicos y desarrollar una etiqueta inteligente para una mejor calidad, seguridad y un mínimo desperdicio de alimentos.

SEAFOOD-AGE aborde le défi socio-économique du vieillissement de la population dans l’Espace Atlantique. Le vieillissement en santé exige une alimentation saine et les produits marins fournissent nutriments essentiels auxquels les personnes âgées ne sont pas toujours accessibles. Le projet exploitera la dimension maritime des régions de l’Espace Alantique et adoptera des concepts d’économie circulaire pour générer des produits de la mer prêts à consommer pour un vieillissement en bonne santé, produire de nouveaux emballages écologiques et développer une étiquette intelligente pour une meilleure qualité, sécurité et un minimum de gaspillage alimentaire.

Achievements (EN):

The ageing of population is a common challenge in the Atlantic Area. Healthy ageing requires a healthy diet and seafood products provide valuable nutritional properties, not always accessible to older adults. However, the efficient and sustainable use of marine resources poses further challenges. SEAFOOD-AGE project has exploited the maritime dimension of the Atlantic regions and has adopted circular economy concepts to design sustainable, healthier, safer and high quality ready-to-eat marine products, with a special focus on meeting the needs of adults over 65 years of age and reduce food loss. Strategies have been designed to optimise the production of functional ingredients with high nutritional and healthy properties from underexploited biomass, to be incorporated into ready-to-eat seafood-based products in the form of fish fillets, fishballs or any other shape. Eco-innovative packaging solutions from marine resources or by-products of the food industry were also developed, as edible and biodegradable sachets for sauces or coatings that prevent decomposition of the product by microbial growth. Another action of SEAFOOD-AGE was the development of a smart predictive label (based on tracking the temperature through the value chain and working with algorithms on the cloud that can predict the actual shelflife of the product) to help retailers reduce food waste while optimizing product quality and safety and support consumers to make betterinformed seafood choices. SEAFOOD-AGE promoted the collaboration among research centres and industrial partners across the Atlantic regions and also promoted competencies for innovation to increase SMEs competitiveness and accelerate the pace of embedding the circular economy principles into the seafood sector. "The 30 volunteers over 65 years of age who participated in the tasting held in Ourense, were really excited to be part of an innovative experience and to taste this food for the first time. Their satisfaction at participating in a tasting-test as potential consumers were unanimous, most of them asking when the product would be on sale to the public so that they could consume it”. Expected Results (EN):

Main results include: • Healthy ageing in the Atlantic Area and beyond, providing older adults access to essential nutrients, thus helping to reduce malnutrition and the associated health burdens. • Efficient and sustainable use of resources, embedding the circular economy principles in the seafood and packaging sectors. • Higher quality, safer supply chain and reduced food waste, adopting smart predictive labels will facilitate higher quality, safer cold chain. • Better innovation profile and competitiveness in the AA. Improved cooperation will enhance the uptake of project innovations and will result in high added-value and more competitive seafood sector.

Expected Outputs (EN):

Outputs have been planned to ensure consistency with project aims and will contribute to the programme’s output indicators. Main outputs in WP1-WP3 include the partnership agreement; communication and capitalisation means and plans; pilot actions and final conference. Each thematic WP foresees several outputs including functional ingredients, RTE seafood for adults 65+, eco-packages and the smart predictive label. Besides joint technical and scientific publications will be produced.
