As metallic NPs present important improvements in diverse industrial applications, the frequency of their application is growing exponentially. However, the studies of risks and mitigation of the presence of NPs in the environment are lagging far behind the rate of utilisation, which represents a critical environmental and safety challenge in the Atlantic Area. The objective of NANOCULTURE is to advance in knowledge, risk assessment and mitigation of environmental presence of the most-used engineered nanoparticles (ENPs): titanium dioxide (TiO2) and silver (Ag) in market products. The focus of the project are the aquatic ecosystems related to aquaculture, specifically, the organisms for human consumption (cultured fish, molluscs, seaweed, sea urchins, etc) a sector of high economic relevance in the Atlantic Area. NANOCULTURE will investigate the effects of ENPs on aquaculture products, their bioaccumulation and assess its impact in human intake. In order to carry out this project, the collaboration of all the participating centres is essential to ensure a wide range of industrial (aquaculture professionals) and scientific profiles (analytical chemists, physical chemists, molecular biologists,) as well as providing infrastructure to run the analysis and deliver real samples from aquaculture plants.

El foco del proyecto están los ecosistemas relacionados con la acuicultura, un sector de alta relevancia económica en el Espacio Atlántico. O NANOCULTURE investigará os efeitos das ANP em produtos de aquacultura e a sua bioacumulação e avaliará o seu impacto na ingestão humana.

L'objectif de NANOCULTURE est l'évaluation des risques et l'atténuation de la présence environnementale des nanoparticules d'ingénierie plus utilisées (ENP): dioxyde de titane (TiO2) et argent (Ag) dans produits commerciaux. Ce projet focalise ses activités principales sur les aquacultures, un secteur d'une grande puissance économique dans l'Espace Atlantiq. NANOCULTURE étudiera les effets des ENP sur des produits de l'aquaculture et leur bioaccumulation et évaluera leur impact sur l'ingestion humaine.

Given the importance of the aquaculture sector for the Atlantic Area, possible adverse effects of the use of engineered nanoparticles in aquaculture should be well understood in order to ensure maximum safety of food products and the environmental-related impacts of the activity. Therefore, the NANOCULTURE project aims to advance in knowledge, risk assessment, and mitigation of the environmental presence of two of the most-used engineered nanoparticles in market products: titanium dioxide and silver. NANOCULTURE is being carried out primarily with real samples destined for human consumption. The selected species, which are common in the Atlantic Area aquaculture industry, are turbot, mussels, and seaweed. Since these organisms are quite distinct, responses to nanoparticle exposure (water filtration capacities, physiological effects, uptake, and elimination profiles) will also be different. The project has studied the current situation on the presence, transformation, bioaccumulation, and effects of titanium dioxide and silver in aquaculture products. It has also evaluated the human risk of exposure by oral intake of aquaculture products containing these identified nanoparticles, taking into account the exposure route and the transformations derived from food preparation processes (cooking). Moreover, it has developed sensors for the rapid identification and quantification of titanium dioxide and silver in aquaculture facilities, allowing decentralised monitoring and quick implementation of measures for risk mitigation. These nanoparticle sensors will enable Atlantic aquaculture to make use of the digital revolution and provide real-time on-site monitoring. The results achieved by NANOCULTURE can be grouped into three categories: i) advancement in knowledge related to the toxicity of engineered nanoparticles to aquaculture organisms, ii) presentation of recommendations and standard operating procedures for mitigating the risk of nanoparticles in aquaculture products, and iii) the development of new analytical methods for detection, characterisation, and quantification of metallic nanoparticles in different media.

Expected Results (EN):

Expected results: 1. Development of standard nanometric procedures. 2. Information on toxicity of the NPs and protocols of action. 3. Information on food safety of aquaculture products. 4. Sensors for the rapid detection of metallic NPs in the waters of aquaculture facilities. Products 1, 2 and 3 related to the development of new analytical methods will be used first by the entities participating in the project, but will then be published so that they can be used by other researchers or companies as they are considered as advances in the knowledge that should be of common interest. However, the products included in section 4 related to the specific development of sensors for the rapid detection of metallic NPs in the aquaculture facilities themselves will be the subject of a patent.

Expected Outputs (EN):

- Standard Operation Procedures on the extraction and analysis of NPs from aquaculture products. - Report on the concentration and size ranges of NPs present in the aquaculture species, as well as on their localization in the organs/tissues. - New proteomic data with biochemical and metabolic information about the effects of NPs on aquaculture species. - Recommendation on the regulation of the presence of NPs in aquaculture. - Report on the determination and characterization of NPs in the bio-accessible and bioavailable fraction in aquaculture products. - Report on the effect of cooking food on the bioavailability of NPs. - Recommendation on the safety limits of NPs in products from aquaculture for human consumption. - Report on the transformations of NPs on water used in aquaculture. - First generation sensors for in situ determination of NPs in water for aquaculture. - Report on the validation of the sensors for in situ determination of NPs in water for aquaculture. - Standard Operation Procedures for mitigation of the risks associated to the presence of NPs in aquaculture products.
