Jonas addresses the threats to marine biodiversity from noise pollution in the Northeast Atlantic, combining noise monitoring and associated risk management, on a transnational basis. Responding to state demand, JONAS will develop and manage an effective noise monitoring platform, applying the techniques included in the Marine Strategy/Marine Space Management Framework Directive and promote the adoption of quieter efficient practices for users of the North-East Atlantic marine space.

JONAS aborda las amenazas que pesan sobre la biodiversidad marina por contaminación acústica en el Atlántico Nordeste, combinando el monitoreo del ruido y la gestión de riesgos asociados, sobre una base transnacional. Respondiendo a la demanda de los Estados, JONAS desarrollará y gestionará una plataforma efectiva de monitoreo de ruido, aplicando las técnicas incluidas en la Directiva Marco sobre la Estrategia Marina/Ordenación del espacio marino y promocionará la adopción de prácticas eficientes más silenciosas para los usuarios del espacio marino del Atlántico Nordeste.

JONAS aborda as ameaças à biodiversidade devido à poluição sonora submarina entre espécies sensíveis no Atlântico Nordeste, através da monitorização do ruído oceânico e gestão do risco numa base transnacional. JONAS visa desenvolver uma plataforma de monitorização do ruído em harmonia com as técnicas e os requisitos da Diretiva-Quadro Estratégia Marinha e do Ordenamento do Espaço Marítimo , adotando práticas mais silenciosas e eficientes entre os utilizadores do espaço marinho do Atlântico Nordeste.

JONAS s'attaque aux menaces induites par la pollution sonore sous-marine sur la biodiversité de l'Atlantique Nord-Est en rationalisant le suivi du bruit et la gestion des risques sur selon une approche transnationale. Les régions de l'Espace Atlantique disposeront d'un cadre régional cohérent pour résoudre ce défi commun via une plate-forme de surveillance du bruit répondant aux exigences de la Directive Cadre sur une Stratégie Maritime/ aménagement de l'espace maritime, en favorisant l'adoption de pratiques plus efficaces et silencieuses auprès des utilisateurs de l'Espace Atlantique.

Achievements (EN):

Increasing human pressure on the ocean and its impact on biodiversity is a major concern to policy makers, scientists and citizens. Marine activities such as shipping offshore surveys, and construction produce continuous and impulsive noise that can adversely affect marine species. Marine noise knows no frontiers and therefore needs to be addressed jointly and cost efficiently among the Atlantic regions, as required by the Marine Strategy Framework Directive. Pooling of knowledge, data and expertise, as well as common and harmonised methodologies, are needed to achieve effective balanced regional assessment. JONAS addresses the risks of these acoustic pressures on marine biodiversity by improving ocean noise monitoring and risk prediction. To better examine the effects of noise on sensitive species in the North-East Atlantic Ocean, JONAS is producing monthly noise and risk maps to support better planning and decision-making in EU Member States. These maps are based on the spatial modelling of noise characteristics and the distributions of key sensitive species. By carrying out five case studies, the project analyses the impacts and effects of acoustic pollution, including ship quieting methods, seismic survey operations, offshore wind energy devices, and acoustic deterrent devices in aquaculture. JONAS is also developing an online noise visualisation platform, a communal workspace designed to make technical material more accessible and transform it into user-friendly tools and services for use by policymakers and researchers. Through research and outputs, JONAS aims to support European nations in meeting the requirements of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive, the EU’s legally-binding framework for protecting Europe’s marine environment. "JONAS 14 partners 12 regions (PT, ES, FR, IE, UK) An underwater noise distribution map to assess the influence of shipping noise on protected species within the area was generated, from a successful collaboration between JONAS and two other Interreg projects, MarPAMM and COMPASS. This map was a benefit not only for the projects involved, but also for the stakeholders concerned with the utilisation of marine resources with consideration to key species who live in the region between Ireland and Scotland.” Dr Naomi Wilson MarPAMM Project Manager, AFBI, Fisheries & Aquatic Ecosystems.

Some expected results are: - Acoustic data observatories for ocean noise mapping. - Common recommendations and requirements for data gathering. - Noise map calibration data set – technical report Atlantic Arc noise map calibration data set – paper. - Noise map indicators. - Specification for underwater noise mapping. - Choice of representative species –specific acoustic susceptibility characteristics in the Atlantic. - Methodology for underwater noise risk assessment in the Atlantic Area.

Expected Outputs (EN):

- Monthly noise and risk atlases based on spatial modelling of noise characteristics and the distribution statistics of key bio-indicators for sensitive receptor species; - The pilot demonstrator platform with real-time decision support instrument; - Noise threshold methodology; - The long-term virtual research environment.
