Description (FR): Aujourd’hui, les infrastructures maritimes (IM, telles que digues, jetées, quais, épis, mouillages), omniprésentes sur côtes de la Manche, ne sont ni conçues ni construites dans l’objectif d’améliorer et protéger les écosystèmes côtiers et des eaux de transition, mais seulement pour servir les activités humaines: transport, pêche, aménagement et protection du littoral, plaisance, tourisme. Au contraire, les IM remplacent des écosystèmes côtiers riches par des zones artificielles pauvres en biodiversité. Ces espaces artificialisés créent de plus une barrière aux les larves et juvéniles de nombreuses espèces qui utilisent les écosystèmes côtiers comme refuges et nourricières, avant de rejoindre le large à l’âge adulte.
Pour éviter ces effets négatifs et créer des IM qui améliorent l’état écologique des côtes, il est nécessaire d’accompagner Maîtres d’ouvrage et ingénieurs vers une nouvelle méthode de conception des IM. Commençant par une analyse de l’environnement, le concepteur oriente sa stratégie en fonction des besoins du site: la protection d’une espèce menacée présente localement ou l’amélioration globale d’un site aux caractéristiques écologiques communes. La création d’indicateurs plus facile à utiliser et d’une méthode d’évaluation globale (en accord avec la Directive Cadre Stratégique sur le Milieu Marin, activités
3.4 et
4.4) fournira aux professionnels les outils nécessaires à cette analyse. Ensuite, grâce à des opérations pilotes (OP) en environnement réel (FR et RU), le projet fournira des solutions techniques pour les deux axes stratégiques d’action (MT3 pour la protection d’une espèce ciblée et MT4 pour l’amélioration globale de la biodiversité). L’ innovation, qui consiste à intégrer directement dans les IM des habitats pour les organismes marins, sera rendue possible par l’adaptation de matériaux couramment utilisés (bétons) à un cahier des charges écologique précis.
Les IM biomimétiques seront déployées sur 3 OP d’envergure et 6 sites expérimentaux pour tester différents types d’IM et assurer la transférabilité dans toute la zone FMA. Les améliorations apportées par ces IM seront mesurées selon les descripteurs de la DCSMM (mesure de la biomasse, de la biodiversité, de l’abondance des ressources halieutiques et de l’eutrophisation; suivi des espèces invasives et analyse des réseaux trophiques). Le projet vise une amélioration globale d’au moins 15% de l’ensemble de ces indicateurs par rapport à la situation existante. Les technologies développées seront adaptées à la fois à la construction neuve et à la réhabilitation des IM existantes.
La rentabilité économique des IM biomimétiques est assurée en travaillant sur la base de matériaux et techniques de constructions connues pour garantir surcoût négligeable (<5%) par rapport aux technologies existantes. Nous accélèrerons la mise sur le marché de nos solutions par la création formations (MT5) et de business models à destination des donneurs d’ordre, maîtres d’oeuvres et entreprises.
Read more Description (EN): Today, marine infrastructures (MIs, such as dikes, quays, piers, groynes, and moorings), which are ubiquitous on the Channel coasts, do not incorporate the enhancement of coastal and transitional water ecosystems in their design and during construction. They sole purpose is to serve human activities: transport, fishing, coastal planning, shoreline protection, boating, and tourism. In fact, MIs are almost invariably replacing rich coastal ecosystems with artificial zones of poor biodiversity. These artificial areas create barriers to the larvae and juveniles of numerous species that use coastal ecosystems as shelters and nurseries before mature adults move to the open seas.
To avoid these negative effects and create MIs that enhance the ecological status of coasts, it is necessary to help project owners, managers and engineers using new MI design methods. Starting with an environmental analysis, the designer tailors his or her strategy according to the needs of the site: the protection of a local threatened species or the global improvement of a site with common ecological characteristics. The creation of easy-to-use indicators and a global assessment method (in accordance with the Marine Strategy Framework Directive, Activities
3.4 and
4.4) will provide professionals with the tools they need for this analysis. Then, thanks to pilot operations (POs) in live conditions in France and the UK, the project will provide technical solutions for two strategic plans of action (WP3 for the protection of a target species and WP4 for the overall improvement of biodiversity). The integration of habitats for marine organisms directly into the MIs, which is the main innovation of the project, will be made possible by adaptating commonly used materials (concrete) to precise ecological specifications.
These biomimetic MIs will be deployed in three large-scale POs and six experimental sites to test various types of MIs and ensure their transferability across the FCE area. The improvements brought about by these MIs will be measured according to the descriptors of the MSFD (measurement of biomass, biodiversity, abundance of fishery resources and eutrophication; monitoring of invasive species and analysis of trophic networks). The project aims for an overall improvement of at least 15% for all these indicators. The technologies developed will be tailored to both new construction and rehabilitation of existing MIs. The economic profitability of biomimetic MIs will be ensured by working with known materials and constructions techniques to ensure a negligible extra cost (<5%) as compared to existing technologies. We will ensure the fast-tomarket placing of our solutions by creating trainings (WP5) and business models for ordering institutions, engineers and construction companies.

Les améliorations de l’état écologique des eaux sera mesurée par une amélioration d’au moins 15% des 6 principaux descripteurs de l’état écologique par rapport à l’état initial (avant le déployement des infrastructures biomimétiques).
