Description (EN): Faced with the demise of the textile industries in the region in the wake of competition from emerging countries, the Hauts de France region and Belgium are pooling their know-how and innovation to develop technical textiles with high added value.
In this context, the PHOTOTEX project aims to develop a new type of intelligent textiles that will improve thermal comfort by dynamically regulating the space between the skin and the textile. These innovative garments are capable of delivering infrared radiation to the body in line with the conditions of use: temperature (body or external) and humidity (perspiration). To achieve this objective, PHOTOTEX is inspired by photonic structures, nanostructures that interact with light according to their wavelength (i.e. their colour). PHOTOTEX generates similar structures adapted to infrared “light” using methods compatible with the textile industry, combining several original approaches. The design and shaping of these textiles, as well as the evaluation of their performance, require a multidisciplinary approach involving specialists, on whose input PHOTOTEX draws in the form of a cross-border consortium.

In deze context wil het project PHOTOTEX een nieuw type intelligent textiel ontwikkelen dat het thermische comfort zal verbeteren dankzij een dynamische regeling van de ruimte tussen de huid en het textiel. Deze innovatieve kleding kan de infraroodstraling naar het lichaam terugzenden afhankelijk van de gebruiksomstandigheden: temperatuur (lichaams- of externe temperatuur) en vocht (transpiratie). Om dit doel te bereiken, inspireert PHOTOTEX zich op de fotonische structuren, nanostructuren die met het licht interageren afhankelijk van hun golflengte (i.e. hun kleur). PHOTOTEX produceert analoge structuren, aangepast aan het ‘infraroodlicht’ via methoden die compatibel zijn met de textielindustrie en meerdere, originele benaderingen combineren. Het ontwerp en de vormgeving van dit textiel, alsook de evaluatie van zijn prestaties, vergen een multidisciplinaire aanpak door specialisten, op wie PHOTOTEX steunt in de vorm van een grensoverschrijdend consortium.

Ces vêtements innovants sont capables de restituer le rayonnement infrarouge vers le corps en fonction des conditions d’utilisation : température (corporelle ou externe) et humidité (transpiration). Pour atteindre cet objectif, PHOTOTEX s’inspire des structures photoniques, nanostructures interagissant avec la lumière en fonction de leur longueur d’onde (i.e. leur couleur). PHOTOTEX génère des structures analogues adaptés à la « lumière » infrarouge via des méthodes compatibles avec l’industrie textile, combinant plusieurs approches originales. La conception et la mise en forme de ces textiles, ainsi que l’évaluation de leurs performances, requièrent une approche pluridisciplinaire faisant appel à des spécialistes, sur lesquels PHOTOTEX s’appuie sous la forme d'un consortium transfrontalier.
Read more Achievements (EN): Regarding the working module on membrane selection and structuring, the choice of polymer materials compatible with the textile industrial world was made in consultation with all operators. The choice was the family of polyamides, polyimides, polyacrylamides (PNIPAM) and polycaprolactone. It also appears that the incorporation of inorganic/ceramic particles (e.g.: silica and titanium oxide) would modify the radiation properties in the field of the infrared medium. The optical properties of the medium infrared are particularly important when considering interactions with the human body, because at normal skin temperature, much of the radiative power emitted by the body is centered in the average infrared, between 7 and 14 µm. Thanks to a theoretical modeling carried out by UMONS and ULille it has been shown that the incorporation of SiO2 particles into a polymer matrix makes it possible to control the temperature of the membrane. Indeed, the so-called photonic structures from the incorporation of particles (SiO2) into a polyacrylamide matrix showed an increase in reflectance around the wavelength of 10 µm. The realisation of “simple” polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) membranes of different thicknesses (7, 9 and 11 µm) showed that at the optical level there was a good correlation between experimental and theoretical calculation. The study of the variations of optical indices of polymer membranes made it possible to establish a relationship between the desired optical response of a membrane and the required nanoparticle load rate. In addition to integrating ceramic loads into a polymer matrix, the formation of thin textured films in the form of wrinkles can also interact with medium infrared radiation (heat source). Thus, Materia Nova prepared and characterised wrinkle-like disordered morphologies on polymimide (PI) membrane flexible supports. UMONS modeled these wrinkled structures in order to compare the results with experimental structures whose optical characterisation in the field of infrared is carried out by HEI-Junia. UGent synthesised and characterised furan-PNIPAM copolymer nanofibers by electrofiling. This copolymer contains a thermosensitive part, PNIPAM (poly(N-isopropylacrylamide), which can inflate or shrink according to external conditions (temperature and humidity). Obtaining such water-stable copolymers was difficult so that another PNIPAM-based copolymer was synthesised. On the other hand, the incorporation of metal elements such as silver into this matrix was carried out in order to benefit from the optical properties of silver in the field of infrared. The second work module aims at the selection and structuring of filaments has also been initiated on a consultation on the choice of materials. Polymer matrices and selected loads are similar to those chosen in the previous module on membranes. The preferred polymeric matrices are polypropylene (PP) and polyamide-6 frequently used in the textile field. ENSAIT and UMONS produced polypropylene and polyethylene filaments loaded with silica nanoparticles (SiO2) and carbon nanotubes whose load distribution analysis was entrusted to Materia Nova. Simulations of the thermal properties performed by UMONS on metallic fibres in hexagonal structure showed the benefits of controlling the arrangement of the elements (geometric configuration). Thus, according to thermal calculations, the use of a SiO2-based core coated with an aluminium layer shows an improvement in thermal properties of 10 °C. On the other hand, UMONS also offers a textile with two faces, one with a wide emissivity (silicon carbide, SiC) and a face with low emissivity (metal fibers). Thus, if the highly emissive side is outward, the garment cools, and vice versa. The parameters were numerically optimised, resulting in a wide emissivity contrast between the two sides (0.01 versus 0.74), giving a wide comfortable temperature range of 12 °C. The optical characterisation of the samples prepared to date has been carried out in HEI-Junia using the infrared spectrometer equipped with an integration sphere that is suitable for measurements in the thermal domain. To date, 22 scientific papers have already been made with the results of the work on WP3 and 4. Four small demonstrators have been developed and a scale-up is underway. On the other hand, in order to promote and disseminate the results of the project, EURAMATERIALS, in collaboration with the leader, has been able to set up a valorisation committee composed of companies from the various sides. The companies that responded favourably are: Damart (FR), Dupont Beaudeux (FR), VPS Protection (FR), Concordia (FL), Decathlon (FR). Two other companies showed an interest in the project but did not respond to our request to join the valuation committee Sioen (FL) and Devan (FL).
Read more Achievements (FR): Concernant le module de travail sur la sélection et la structuration des membranes, le choix de matériaux polymères compatibles avec le monde industriel textile a été fait en concertation avec tous les opérateurs. Le choix s'est porté sur la famille des polyamides, des polyimides, des polyacrylamides (PNIPAM) et la polycaprolactone. Il s'avère également que l'incorporation de particules inorganiques/céramiques (par exemple : silice et oxyde de titane) permettrait de modifier les propriétés de rayonnement dans le domaine du moyen infrarouge. Les propriétés optiques de l'infrarouge moyen sont particulièrement importantes lorsqu'on considère les interactions avec le corps humain, car à la température normale de la peau, une grande partie de la puissance radiative émise par le corps est centrée dans l'infrarouge moyen, entre 7 et 14 µm. Grâce à une modélisation théorique opérée par UMONS et ULille il a été montré que l'incorporation de particules de SiO2 dans une matrice polymère permet de contrôler la température de la membrane. En effet, les structures dites photoniques issus de l'incorporation de particules (SiO2) dans une matrice polyacrylamide ont montré une augmentation de la réflectance autour de la longueur d'onde de 10 µm. La réalisation de membranes « simples » de polydiméthylsiloxane (PDMS) de différentes épaisseurs (7, 9 et 11 µm) a montré qu'au niveau optique on avait une bonne corrélation entre l'expérimental et le calcul théorique. L'étude des variations des indices optiques de membranes de polymère a permis d'établir une relation entre la réponse optique souhaitée d'une membrane et le taux de charge en nanoparticules nécessaire. Outre l'intégration de charges céramiques dans une matrice polymère, la formation de films minces texturés sous forme de rides peut également interagir avec le rayonnement infrarouge moyen (source de chaleur). Ainsi, Materia Nova a préparé et caractérisé des morphologies désordonnées de type ride sur des supports flexibles membranaires à base de polymimide (PI). UMONS a modélisé ces structures ridées afin de confronter les résultats aux structures expérimentales dont la caractérisation optique dans le domaine de l'infra-rouge est réalisée par HEI-JUNIA. UGent a synthétisé et caractérisé des nanofibres de copolymère furane-PNIPAM par électrofilage. Ce copolymère contient une partie thermosensible, le PNIPAM (poly(N-isopropylacrylamide), pouvant gonfler ou rétrécir en fonction des conditions extérieures (température et humidité). L'obtention de tels copolymères stables à l'eau a été difficile si bien qu'un autre copolymère à base de PNIPAM a été synthétisé. D'autre part, l'incorporation d'éléments métalliques tel que l'argent dans cette matrice a été réalisé afin de bénéficier les propriétés optiques de l'argent dans le domaine de l'infrarouge. Le second module de travail a pour objectif la sélection et la structuration des filaments a également été entamé sur une concertation de choix de matériaux. Les matrices polymères et les charges sélectionnées sont similaires à celles choisies dans le module précédent sur les membranes. Les matrices polymériques préférées sont le polypropylène (PP) et le polyamide-6 fréquemment utilisés dans le domaine du textile. L'ENSAIT et l'UMONS, ont produit des filaments de polypropylène et de polyéthylène chargés de nanoparticules de silice (SiO2) et des nanotubes de carbone dont l'analyse de la distribution des charges a été confiée à Materia Nova. Les simulations des propriétés thermiques réalisées par UMONS sur des fibres métalliques en structure hexagonale ont montré les bénéfices de contrôler la disposition des éléments (configuration géométrique). Ainsi, d'après les calculs thermiques, l'utilisation d'un cœur à base de SiO2 enrobée d'une couche d'aluminium, montre une amélioration des propriétés thermiques de 10 °C. D'autre part, UMONS propose également un textile avec deux faces dont une possédant une large émissivité (carbure de silicium, SiC)) et une face avec une faible émissivité (fibres métalliques). Ainsi, si le côté très émissif est vers l'extérieur, le vêtement refroidit, et vice versa. Les paramètres ont numériquement été optimisés, résultant dans un large contraste d'émissivité entre les deux côtés (0,01 versus 0,74), ce qui donne une large plage de température confortable de 12 °C. La caractérisation optique des échantillons préparés jusqu'à maintenant a été réalisée chez HEI-JUNIA à l'aide du spectromètre infrarouge muni d'une sphère d'intégration qui est adapté aux mesures dans le domaine thermique. Jusqu'à maintenant, 22 communications scientifiques ont déjà été faites avec les résultats des travaux relatifs aux WP3 et 4. Quatre démonstrateurs de petites tailles ont été mis au point et une montée en échelle est en cours. D'autre part, afin de valoriser et diffuser les résultats du projet, Euramaterials, en collaboration avec le chef de file, a su mettre en place un comité de valorisation constitué d’entreprises des différents versants. Les entreprises ayant répondu favorablement sont : Damart (FR), Dupont Beaudeux (FR), VPS Protection (FR), Concordia (FL), Decathlon (FR). Deux autres entreprises ont montré un intérêt pour le projet mais n'ont pas répondu à notre demande d'intégrer le comité de valorisation Sioen (FL) et Devan (FL).

Expected Outputs (EN): Among the companies informed of the work, 25 will benefit from the results in different forms (the potential offered by a technology transfer, exploratory trials, etc.). Among those participating in the cross-border research projects, 50% will be able to bring a new product onto the market. Joint training sessions will stimulate technology transfer. It is estimated that two companies on each side of the border eligible for support will subsequently become partners in a European “public-private” project, the result of successful technology transfer to innovative companies in the cross-border area.
Read more Expected Outputs (NL): Vijfentwintig van de over de werken geïnformeerde bedrijven zullen baat hebben bij de resultaten onder verschillende vormen (mogelijkheden dankzij technologieoverdracht, verkennende tests, …). 50% van de ondernemingen die aan de grensoverschrijdende onderzoeksprojecten deelnemen, zal de mogelijkheid hebben om een nieuw product op de markt te brengen. De gezamenlijke opleidingssessies kunnen de technologieoverdracht stimuleren. Er wordt verwacht dat twee van de gesteunde ondernemingen per zijde vervolgens partners zullen worden in een Europees publiek-privéproject, de concrete uitvoering van een geslaagde technologieoverdracht bij innovatieve ondernemingen uit de grenszone.
Read more Expected Outputs (FR): Parmi les netreprises informées des travaux, 25 bénéficieront des résultats sous différentes formes (potentialité offerte par un transfert technologique, essais exploratoires,…). Parmi celles qui participent aux projets de recherche transfrontaliers, 50% d'entre elles auront la possibilité d'introduire un nouveau produit sur le marché. Les sessions de formation conjointes permettront de stimuler un transfert technologique. Il est estimé que deux entreprises par versant bénéficiant d'un soutien seront par la suite partenaires d'un projet européen "public-privé", concrétisation d'un transfert technologique réussi auprès des entreprises innovantes de la zone transfrontalière.
