Description (NL): De chirurgische behandeling van ernstige pathologieën zoals borstkanker leidt soms tot het verlies van weefsel, met name na een ablatie (masectomie) die in bijna 73% van de gevallen wordt toegepast. Europa en in het bijzonder de Frans-Belgische grensstreek is een van de regio’s in de wereld waar borstkanker het meest voorkomt.
Het project MAT(T)ISSE stelt een nieuwe bioprothese voor om het lichaam te helpen bij het herstel van de aangetaste zones na een chirurgische ingreep.
Na verloop van tijd hebben de patiëntes die deze behandeling hebben ondergaan een natuurlijke, biologisch afbreekbare prothese, gemaakt van hun eigen vetcellen, die een tweede ingreep overbodig maakt.
Om deze uitdaging op te nemen, bouwt MaT(T)ISSE aan een grensoverschrijdende samenwerking van hoge kwaliteit met partners die elkaar aanvullen in hun competentiegebied: de ontwikkeling van nieuwe, resorbeerbare en biocompatibele biomaterialen en de transformatie van deze materialen in draden, netten of gepersonaliseerde, inplantbare 3D objecten. Hun biologische en medische belang wordt gevalideerd aan de hand van inplantingsprotocols.
Read more Description (FR): Le traitement chirurgical de pathologies graves comme les cancers du sein aboutit parfois à des pertes de tissus, notamment après une ablation (masectomie) qui est pratiquée dans presque 73% des cas. L'Europe fait partie des régions du monde les plus touchées par le cancer du sein et spécialement sur la zone transfrontalière franco-belge.
Le projet MATTISSE propose une nouvelle bioprothèse qui a pour but d’aider l’organisme à restaurer des régions lésées suite à des interventions chirurgicales.
A terme, les patientes ayant bénéficié de ce traitement ont une prothèse naturelle constituée de leurs propres cellules adipeuses, biodégradable et qui ne nécessite pas de deuxième intervention.
Pour relever ce défi, MaT(T)ISSE construit une coopération transfrontalière de qualité avec des partenaires complémentaires dans leur domaine de compétence : développement de nouveaux biomatériaux résorbables et biocompatibles, transformation de ces matériaux en fils, dentelles ou encore objets implantables 3D personnalisés. Leur intérêt biologique et médical est enfin validé au travers de protocoles d’implantations.

Europe is one of the regions of the world most affected by breast cancer and especially in the Franco-Belgian cross-border zone.
The MATTISSE project proposes a new bioprosthesis that aims to help the body restore damaged areas following surgical procedures.
Ultimately, patients who have benefited from this treatment have a natural prosthesis made up of their own fat cells, that is biodegradable and which does not require a second operation.
To meet this challenge, MaT(T)ISSE is nurturing quality cross-border cooperation with complementary partners in their field of expertise: development of new absorbable and biocompatible biomaterials, transformation of these materials into customised wires, lace or 3D implantable objects. Their biological and medical interest is finally validated via implant protocols.
Read more Achievements (FR): Pour parvenir à mettre en œuvre une solution innovante, originale et utile de reconstruction mammaire, à l’aide d’une prothèse biorésorbable, le CHU de Lille a sollicité des experts internationaux, présents dans le Nord de la France et en Belgique. Des chercheurs en matériaux (Materia Nova, Mons), en simulation et modélisation (SIRRIS, Gosselies) et en textile (ENSAIT, Roubaix), travaillent avec des chercheurs de l'Université de Mons et des médecins spécialisés en biologie et chirurgie plastique du CHU de Lille pour concevoir et développer les prothèses de demain. La dissémination des résultats a été confiée à Euramaterials (ex-Up-TEX, Roubaix), pôle de compétitivité spécialisé sur la transformation des matériaux et notamment le textile, ainsi qu'Eurasanté (Loos), agence de développement économique spécialisée en santé. Les 3 premières années du projet ont permis de parvenir à plusieurs avancées scientifiques : - L'orientation vers 2 polymères spécifiques en raison de leurs propriétés. L'un offre des propriétés de résistance mécanique intéressantes, l'autre permet une forte déformation sans rupture. De premiers mélanges et mise en oeuvre de ces 2 polymères offrent des résultats intéressants et permettront d'aboutir, au semestre 4, à de nouveaux échantillons plus performants encore. - Une maîtrise des méthodes de mise en œuvre par filage, tricotage et impression 3D de ces nouveaux matériaux et des gammes de mélanges. - Des tests de dégradation in vitro, conduits sur les échantillons préparés par l’ENSAIT et le SIRRIS, avec le soutien de Materia Nova, dont les résultats sont encourageants. Les paramètres doivent encore faire l'objet d'un ajustement pour parvenir au temps et à la qualité de résorption souhaités. - Les tests de biocompatibilité (comportement des cellules en présence des biomatériaux réalisés avec les polymères sélectionnés) montrent eux aussi des résultats encourageants. De bons résultats de différenciation, prolifération et survie cellulaire sont observés. - Un affinage progressif du cahier des charges des deux dispositifs qui seront nécessaires à la pose de la prothèse : le socle textile qui permettra de placer les tissus et cellules permettant la régénération cellulaire, et la coque imprimée en 3D qui servira de guide à la reconstruction tout autant que de bouclier en cas de choc. L'objectif étant qu'à terme et une fois la reconstruction du site mammaire suffisamment avancée, les 2 dispositifs se résorbent. - De premiers prototypes ont été imprimés en 3D. De nouveaux tests d’impression 3D doivent être conduits avec les mélanges de polymères sélectionnés pour préparer les études pré-cliniques qui nous permettront d’évaluer le comportement des matériaux et leur impact sur le comportement des cellules in vivo. Les formulations d’intérêt étant désormais arrêtées, la dernière année du projet est désormais celle du passage des travaux de biocompatibilité in vitro à ceux qui seront réalisés in vivo. La fin d’année 2020 et le début de l’année 2021 ont été largement consacrés à la consolidation des données de biocompatibilité in vitro en vue de l’organisation d’études in vivo. En seconde partie d’année 2021, deux études in vivo ont été initiées afin d’évaluer d’une part la biocompatibilité et l’absence de toxicicité des supports développés (matériaux biorésorbables) et l’absence de signe inflammatoire et, d’autre part, l’influence de ces supports sur le comportement cellulaire et donc le phénomène de régénération tissulaire. Les conclusions de ces deux études seront dressées au cours du dernier semestre du projet, c’est-à-dire le début d’année 2022. Malgré l’actualité sanitaire et les restrictions de déplacement, le projet Mat(t)isse avance et continue à proposer des évènements spécialisés ou destinés au grand-public. Un évènement à destination des patientes « Matisse rencontre Mat(t)isse : se reconstruire après une mastectomie », organisé le 8 mars 2020 au musée Matisse du Cateau-Cambrésis, a connu un vif succès. Une deuxième édition des journées technologiques biomédicales sur la thématique des implants au lieu le 1er octobre 2020, en webinaire. Un atelier « towards 4D printing » a été organisé, le 10 décembre 2020 au sein de la convention d’affaires internationale MedFIT 2020. Enfin, un évènement de présentation des résultats du projet, organisé le 15 juin 2021, à destination d’un public notamment composé d’industriels, a permis de mettre en lumière les belles réussites du projet et la possibilité de ré-exploiter les résultats pour des applications de régénération tissulaire, y compris en dehors de la reconstruction mammaire. Un support récapitulant les différents résultats du projet a été finalisé en 2022 puis diffusé dans le cadre de l’évènement de clôture du projet qui s’est tenu le 7 juin 2022 à l’Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts et Industries Textiles (ENSAIT, Roubaix, France). Read more Achievements (EN): In order to implement an innovative, original and useful breast reconstruction solution, using a bioresorbable prosthesis, the Lille University Hospital asked international experts, present in northern France and Belgium. Researchers in materials (Materia Nova, Mons), simulation and modelling (SIRRIS, Gosselies) and textiles (ENSAIT, Roubaix), are working with researchers from the University of Mons and doctors specialising in biology and plastic surgery at the University of Lille to design and develop the prostheses of tomorrow. The dissemination of the results has been entrusted to EURAMATERIALS (ex-Up-TEX, Roubaix), a competitiveness cluster specialised in the processing of materials and in particular textiles, as well as Eurasanté (Loos), an economic development agency specialised in health. The first 3 years of the project have made it possible to achieve several scientific advances: — Orientation to 2 specific polymers due to their properties. One offers interesting mechanical strength properties, the other allows a strong deformation without breaking. The first mixtures and implementation of these two polymers offer interesting results and will lead, in the semester 4, to new, more efficient samples. — A mastery of the methods of application by spinning, knitting and 3D printing of these new materials and ranges of mixtures. — In vitro degradation tests, conducted on samples prepared by ENSAIT and SIRRIS, with the support of Materia Nova, whose results are encouraging. The parameters still need to be adjusted to achieve the desired time and resorption quality. Biocompatibility tests (behaviour of cells in the presence of biomaterials performed with selected polymers) also show encouraging results. Good results of differentiation, proliferation and cell survival are observed. — Progressive refinement of the specification of the two devices which will be necessary for the installation of the prosthesis: the textile base that will make it possible to place tissues and cells allowing cell regeneration, and the 3D printed shell that will serve as a guide to reconstruction as well as shield in case of shock. The objective is that in the long term and once the reconstruction of the breast site is sufficiently advanced, the two devices will resolve. — First prototypes were printed in 3D. New 3D printing tests must be conducted with selected polymer mixtures to prepare pre-clinical studies that will allow us to assess the behavior of materials and their impact on cell behavior in vivo. As the formulations of interest are now finalised, the last year of the project is now that of the transition from in vitro biocompatibility work to those that will be carried out in vivo. The end of 2020 and the beginning of 2021 were largely devoted to consolidating in vitro biocompatibility data for the organisation of in vivo studies. In the second half of 2021, two in vivo studies were initiated to assess on the one hand the biocompatibility and the absence of toxicity of the developed media (bioresorbable materials) and the absence of an inflammatory sign and, on the other hand, the influence of these media on cell behavior and thus the phenomenon of tissue regeneration. The conclusions of these two studies will be drawn up during the last semester of the project, i.e. the beginning of 2022. Despite the current health and travel restrictions, the Mat(t)isse project is advancing and continues to propose specialised events or for the general public. An event for patients “Matisse meets Mat(t)isse: rebuild after a mastectomy”, organised on March 8, 2020 at the Matisse Museum of Cateau-Cambrésis, was a great success. A second edition of the Biomedical Technology Days on the theme of implants instead of October 1, 2020, in webinars. A “towards 4D printing” workshop was organised on 10 December 2020 within the MedFIT 2020 international business convention. Finally, an event presenting the results of the project, organised on 15 June 2021, aimed at an audience composed of industrialists, highlighted the successes of the project and the possibility of re-using the results for tissue regeneration applications, including outside breast reconstruction. Expected Results (NL): Het project MATTISSE zal ook na het programma worden voortgezet vanwege van zijn onderzoeksdimensie en zijn ambitie om een technologische doorbraak teweeg te brengen op het gebied van orgaanreconstructie. Er zullen immers klinische tests nodig zijn en later zullen andere toepassingen het partnerschap in stand houden.

Expected Results (EN): The MATTISSE project will continue after the programme because of its research dimension and its desire to create a technological breakthrough in the field of organ reconstruction. Expected Outputs (NL): Halverwege het programma zullen minstens twee ondernemingen rechtstreeks bij de werkzaamheden worden betrokken. Vóór het eind van het project zullen dit er al vijf zijn. Deze ondernemingen kunnen nieuwe producten aan het gamma toevoegen en zullen worden gesensibiliseerd voor de innovaties van het project. De verspreiding van de werkzaamheden en de andere toepassingen van de prothese moeten tot andere onderzoekspartnerschappen leiden. Het project heeft de ambitie tien grensoverschrijdende onderzoeksinstellingen te integreren vóór het eind van het project en tien andere te sensibiliseren. In een eerste fase worden 180 inplantingen bij dieren beoogd.

Ces entreprises pourront introduire de nouveaux produits en gamme et seront sensibilisées aux innovations du projet. La diffusion des travaux ainsi que les autres applications de la prothèse devront conduire à d'autres partenariats de recherche. Le projet ambitionne d'intégrer 10 établissements de recherche transfrontaliers avant la fin du projet et d'en sensibiliser 10 autres. Le nombre de 180 implantations animales est visé dans un premier temps.
