Flax fibre is a high value-added and environmentally friendly product in the textile sector. Europe currently produces 80% of the world's flax fibre resource and the Franco-Belgian zone has a particularly unique know-how in this field. Changes in climatic conditions, the decrease in the effectiveness of plant protection products and the pressure exerted by pathogens could jeopardise the economy and the social links generated around the production and exploitation of flax fibre in these territories. The PATHOFLAX project aims to secure this regional agronomic excellence by coming up with eco-compatible solutions adapted to the challenges already facing the flax fibre sector. Over the past 10 years, a fungal disease called wilt caused by a soil-borne pathogenic fungus, Verticillium dahliae, has emerged in both France and Belgium and could cause fibre yield losses in flax crops. Currently, flax growers have limited means of action against wilt, no effective plant protection control measures and no resistant flax varieties have been identified. In this context, the PATHOFLAX project has several objectives including (i) the carrying out of an epidemiological study into this disease in all territories where flax fibre is grown, (ii) the study and implementation of approaches based on the stimulation of the plant's natural defences by non-infectious Verticillium strains or natural elicitors, approaches that respect the environment and finally (iii) the use of natural flax biodiversity to identify varieties resistant to the disease. This information is made available to farmers.

Vlasvezel is een milieuvriendelijk product met hoge toegevoegde waarde in de textielsector. Europa produceert vandaag 80% van het wereldwijde volume van vlasvezel en vooral de Frans-Belgische zone beschikt over een unieke knowhow op dit gebied. De verandering van de klimaatomstandigheden, de dalende efficiëntie van de fytosanitaire producten en de door pathogenen uitgeoefende druk kunnen een bedreiging vormen voor de economie en de sociale banden die in deze zones rond de productie en exploitatie van vlasvezel zijn gegroeid. Het project PATHOFLAX wil deze regionale agronomische uitmuntendheid veiligstellen door ecocompatibele oplossingen te bieden, aangepast aan de uitdagingen waarmee de vlaslinnensector al wordt geconfronteerd. De laatste tien jaar is in Frankrijk en België een schimmelziekte, verticillium, opgedoken. Ze wordt veroorzaakt door een pathogene aardeschimmel, Verticillium dahliae. Ze kan leiden tot een daling van de opbrengst van de vlasvezels. Vandaag beschikken de vlasproducenten over weinig middelen tegen Verticillium, want geen enkel fytosanitair bestrijdingsmiddel is efficiënt en er is nog geen enkele vlasvariëteit ontdekt die ertegen bestand is. In dit kader heeft het project PATHOFLAX meerdere doelstellingen, waaronder (i) de uitvoering van een epidemiologische studie van deze ziekte in alle zones waar vlaslinnen wordt geteeld, (ii) de studie en uitvoering van milieuvriendelijke methoden op basis van de stimulering van de natuurlijke afweermechanismen van de plant door stammen van niet-besmettelijk Verticillium of natuurlijke elicitoren, en tot slot (iii) het gebruik van de natuurlijke biodiversiteit van het vlas om variëteiten te vinden die tegen de ziekte bestand zijn. Deze informatie wordt ter beschikking van de landbouwers gesteld.

La fibre de lin est un produit à haute valeur ajoutée et écologique dans le domaine du textile. L'Europe produit actuellement 80% de la ressource mondiale de fibre de lin et la zone franco-belge dispose particulièrement d’un savoir-faire unique dans ce domaine. Le changement des conditions climatiques, la diminution de l'efficacité des produits phytosanitaires ainsi que la pression exercée par des pathogènes pourrait mettre en péril l'économie et les liens sociaux générés autour de la production et l'exploitation de la fibre de lin dans ces territoires. Le projet PATHOFLAX vise à sécuriser cette excellence agronomique régionale en fournissant des solutions éco-compatibles et adaptées aux défis auxquels le secteur de la fibre de lin est déjà confronté. Au cours des 10 dernières années, une maladie fongique appelée verticilliose causée par un champignon pathogène tellurique, le Verticillium dahliae, est apparue aussi bien en France qu’en Belgique et pourrait être la cause de pertes de rendement en fibre chez le lin. Actuellement, les producteurs de lin disposent de faibles moyens d’action face à la verticilliose, aucun moyen de lutte phytosanitaire n’étant efficace et aucune variété de lin résistante n’ayant été identifiée. Dans ce cadre, le projet PATHOFLAX a plusieurs objectifs dont (i) la réalisation d’une étude épidémiologique de cette maladie sur l’ensemble des territoires où le lin fibre est cultivé, (ii) l’étude et la mise en œuvre d’approches basées sur la stimulation des défenses naturelles de la plante par des souches de Verticillium non-infectieuses ou des éliciteurs naturels, approches qui sont respectueuses de l’environnement et enfin, (iii) l’utilisation de la biodiversité naturelle du lin afin d’identifier des variétés résistantes à la maladie. Ces informations sont mises à la disposition des agriculteurs.

Achievements (EN):

IPM toolbox: This project took the first steps towards an IPM toolbox for integrated control of Verticillium in flax. In order to be able to intervene preventively, knowledge was collected about the influence of cultivation techniques on disease prevention. Relevant differences in susceptibility between varieties have also been identified, providing opportunities for genetic progress to combat the disease. Interesting pathways involving an antagonistic fungus may contribute to integrated pest control. However, in the short term there is no panacea, so research efforts must continue in all areas over the next few years.

Expected Results (EN):

The network built as part of the PATHOFLAX project will make it possible to maintain regional leadership in the field of biological control and may drive future scientific and economic developments in the Interreg region, which is important in the field of flax production and processing. Farmers are the priority targets of the project, followed by industry and civil society.

Het netwerk, opgebouwd in het kader van het project PATHOFLAX, zal het mogelijk maken het regionale leiderschap in de biologische bestrijding te handhaven en kan de toekomstige wetenschappelijke en economische ontwikkelingen bevorderen in de Interreg-zone, die een grote rol speelt in de vlasteelt en -verwerking. De doelpublieken zijn in de eerste plaats de landbouwers, gevolgd door de industrie en de burgermaatschappij.

Expected Results (FR):

Le réseau construit dans le cadre du projet PATHOFLAX permettra le maintien d'un leadership régional dans le domaine de la lutte biologiques et pourra nourrir de futurs développements scientifiques et économiques dans la région Interreg, importante dns le domaine de la production et du traitement du lin. Le public ciblé sont les agriculteurs en priorité, puis l'industrie et la société civile.

Expected Outputs (EN):

The consortium brings together three companies in the field of research. The project will have a positive impact on the supported FytoFend company but also on the different stakeholders in the flax value chain in the region. It is estimated to attract between 150 and 400 participants in local initiatives; through training, trials and a joint seminar at the end of the project. The ultimate ambition of the project is to lay the foundations for a fully-fledged cross-border cooperation network around the cultivation of flax fibre and the control of wilt.

Het consortium verenigt drie ondernemingen op het gebied van onderzoek. Het project zal een positieve impact hebben op de onderneming FytoFend, die steun krijgt, maar eveneens op de verschillende actoren van de vlaswaardeketen in de streek. Naar schatting 150 tot 400 mensen zullen deelnemen aan lokale initiatieven via opleidingen, tests en een gezamenlijk seminarie op het eind van het project. De ultieme ambitie van het project is de basis te leggen voor een echt grensoverschrijdend samenwerkingsnetwerk rond de vlasteelt en de bestrijding van de Verticillium.

Le consortium associe trois entreprise dans le domaine de la recherche. Le projet aura un impact positif sur l'entreprise FytoFend bénéficiant d'un soutien mais également sur les différents acteurs de la chaîne de valeur du lin dans la région. Entre 150 et 400 participants à des initiatives locales sont estimés, à travers des formations, des essais et un séminaire commun en fin de projet. L'ambition ultime du projet est de jeter les bases d'un véritable réseau de coopération transfrontalier autour de la culture de la fibre de lin et du contrôle du verticillium.
