Description (EN):

The use of fibre-reinforced plastics allows transport manufacturers to build structures that are lightweight, but also highly rigid and resistant. The objective of such a structure is to minimise vehicle weight and maximise payload, thus contributing to the overall effort to reduce the ecological footprint of transportation. The optimal technical performance of lightweight structures contributes not only to their durability but also to the development of new base materials and production processes. In this respect, synthetic thermoplastic structures reinforced with natural fibres offer both a technological (performance) and ecological solution. This project focuses on the assembly of individual parts of lightweight structures and mainly on two assembly techniques: laser welding and structural bonding. The project initially aims to optimise the use of natural fibre-reinforced plastics for these two types of assemblies. For both welding and bonding, the surface of the parts to be bonded is crucial for a qualitative bonding. Secondly, this project analyses and optimises the bonding and welding of structures as processes for this type of material. The result of these optimisations is validated at the laboratory level on the basis of coupons. Thirdly, this project aims to develop several demonstrators to enable researchers to characterise and validate the mechanical performance of both types of assemblies at industrial level. Finally, ATHENS also sets out to disseminate the know-how thus generated to its local industrial network.

L'utilisation de plastiques renforcés de fibres permet aux fabricants du secteur des transports de construire des structures légères, mais également très rigides et résistantes. L'objectif d'une telle structure est la minimisation du poids du véhicule et la maximisation de la charge utile, participant ainsi à l'effort global de réduction de l'empreinte écologique des transports. Les performances techniques optimales des structures légères contribuent non seulement à leur durabilité mais aussi au développement de nouveaux matériaux de base et de procédés de production. À cet égard, les structures synthétiques thermoplastiques renforcées de fibres naturelles offrent une solution à la fois technologique (performance) et écologique. Ce projet se concentre sur l’assemblage de pièces individuelles des structures légères et principalement sur deux techniques d'assemblage : le soudage au laser et le collage structurel. Le projet vise dans un premier temps à optimiser l'utilisation de plastiques renforcés de fibres naturelle pour ces deux types d'assemblages. Tant pour le soudage que pour le collage, la surface des pièces à coller est cruciale pour un collage qualitatif. Deuxièmement, ce projet analyse et optimise le collage et le soudage des structures en tant que procédés pour ce type de matériaux. Le résultat de ces optimisations est validé à l’échelle laboratoire sur la base de coupons. Troisièmement, ce projet vise à mettre au point plusieurs démonstrateurs pour permettre aux chercheurs de caractériser et de valider les performances mécaniques des deux types d'assemblages au niveau industriel. Enfin, ATHENS veille à la diffusion du savoir-faire ainsi généré à son réseau industriel local.

Het gebruik van vezelversterkte plastics stelt de fabrikanten van de transportsector in staat lichte, maar heel stevige en duurzame structuren te bouwen. Het doel van een dergelijke structuur is het gewicht van het voertuig te minimaliseren en de nuttige last te maximaliseren, om zo bij te dragen tot de wereldwijde inspanningen om de ecologische voetafdruk van het transport te verminderen. De optimale technische prestaties van de lichte structuren dragen niet alleen bij tot hun duurzaamheid, maar ook tot de ontwikkeling van nieuwe basismaterialen en productieprocedés. In dit opzicht bieden de met natuurvezel versterkte, thermoplastische, synthetische structuren een technologische (prestatieverhogende) en tegelijk ecologische oplossing. Dit project concentreert zich op de assemblage van individuele onderdelen van lichte structuren en in het bijzonder op twee assemblagetechnieken: laserlassen en structureel lijmen. Het project streeft in een eerste fase naar de optimalisatie van het gebruik van met natuurvezel versterkte plastics voor deze twee types assemblages. Zowel voor het lassen als voor het lijmen is het oppervlak van de samen te voegen onderdelen cruciaal voor een hechting van hoge kwaliteit. Ten tweede analyseert en optimaliseert dit project het lijmen en lassen van de structuren als procedés voor dit type materialen. Het resultaat van deze optimalisaties wordt in het laboratorium gevalideerd op basis van monsters. Ten derde streeft dit project ernaar meerdere demonstratiemodellen te ontwikkelen om de onderzoekers in staat te stellen de mechanische prestaties van de twee types assemblages op industrieel niveau te kenmerken en te valideren. Tot slot ziet ATHENS toe op de verspreiding van de aldus gegenereerde knowhow in het lokale industriële netwerk.

Expected Results (EN): The ATHENS project results in the establishment of one student exchange per year, one co-supervised thesis every 4 years and one or two seminars per year. While the transport sector is the main target, various stakeholders in the field of higher education will also be involved.

Le projet ATHENS a pour résultat la mise en place d'un échange d'étudiants par an, d'une thèse en cotutelle tous les 4 ans et d'un ou deux séminaires par an. Si c'est le secteur des transports qui est principalement visé, les différents acteurs de l'enseignement supérieur seront aussi engagés.

Expected Results (NL):

Het resultaat van het project ATHENS is de implementatie van uitwisseling van studenten op jaarbasis, een thesis onder gezamenlijke begeleiding om de vier jaar en één of twee seminaries per jaar. Het is vooral gericht op de transportsector, maar zal ook verschillende actoren uit het hoger onderwijs betrekken.

Expected Outputs (EN):

In addition to the collaborations between operators, two additional specific cross-border partners will be required. Three joint training sessions will be organised with the aim of popularising knowledge with industrial associations in charge of their promotion. Among the companies receiving support, at least one per region should be interested in the development of the project and at least 8 of them will be eligible for support, demonstrating successful technology transfer to innovative companies in the area. The introduction of a new product during the life of the project is intended but may take place at a later date. The project is aiming for the production of two technical demonstrators.

Outre les collaborations entre opérateurs, deux partenaires spécifiques transfrontaliers supplémentaires seront nécessaires. Trois sessions de formation conjointes seront organisées dans un objectif de vulgarisation des connaissances, leur publicité sera réalisée par des associations industrielles. Parmi les entreprises bénéficiant d'un soutien, au moins une par région devrait être intéressée par le développement du projet et au moins 8 d'entre elles pourront bénéficier d'un soutien, témoignant d'un transfert technologique réussi auprès des entreprises innovantes de la zone. L'introduction d'un nouveau produit pendant la durée du projet est visée mais elle pourra éventuellement avoir lieu par la suite. Le projet prévoit la production de deux démonstrateurs techniques.

Behalve de samenwerkingen tussen operatoren, zullen twee bijkomende, specifieke grensoverschrijdende partners nodig zijn. Er zullen drie gezamenlijke opleidingssessies worden georganiseerd om de kennis te verspreiden. Voor de publiciteit hiervan zullen de bedrijfsorganisaties instaan. Per regio zou ten minste één van de gesteunde ondernemingen belangstelling moeten hebben voor de ontwikkeling van het project. Ten minste acht ondernemingen zouden steun ontvangen, als teken van een geslaagde technologieoverdracht naar innovatieve ondernemingen in de zone. Er is voorzien om in de loop van het project een nieuw product te introduceren, hoewel dit eventueel ook nadien kan gebeuren. Het project voorziet de productie van twee technische demonstratiemodellen.
