This project will analyse for the first time the origin and dynamics of microplastics in the ports of the Programme. In addition to the plastics floating on the sea surface, the study will deal with the fibres found in the water column and seabed. The research will provide data on some still unexplored aspects, such as understanding the dynamics of microplastics and studying the influx and quantitative incidence of the various sources of microplastics from dry land to sea and their distribution at various depths in densely populated and active areas. The data will provide additional elements to understand better how, when and where to intervene to reduce the impact of this growing pollution of the marine environment; this will benefit the international community while accounting for current and possible future national and EU regulations. A small pumping device, a trash skimmer, will collect samples at various depths and sediments from the bottom. The samples will be analysed for a quantitative and qualitative definition of the debris and the development of a model that can reveal the distribution and concentration of microplastics in different points of the port area. An analysis will be carried out on mullets, which fish are particularly numerous in ports, to evaluate the biological impact of these fibres. The project will analyse the best numerical model to study microplastics dynamics. This study will be combined with a climatological study to predict the trajectories of plastic debris scattered at sea. The project will disseminate information on the topic and research among the entire population of the interested areas (and not only), with multimedia tools, public initiatives and the direct involvement of economic actors and residents.

Il progetto SPlasH! analizzerà per la prima volta la presenza, l’origine e le dinamiche delle microplastiche nei porti del Programma. Lo studio non si occuperà soltanto delle plastiche galleggianti sulla superficie del mare, ma anche delle fibre presenti nella colonna d’acqua e sul fondale. La ricerca consentirà di fornire dati su alcuni aspetti ancora inesplorati: comprendere la dinamica delle microplastiche; studiare l’afflusso e l’incidenza quantitativa delle varie sorgenti di microplastiche dalla terra ferma al mare e la distribuzione alle varie profondità in zone densamente antropizzate e attive. I dati forniranno ulteriori elementi – anche alla comunità internazionale - per comprendere meglio come, quando e dove intervenire per ridurre l’impatto di questo crescente inquinamento dell’ambiente marino, tenendo conto della situazione normativa – nazionale e comunitaria - esistente in materia e le sue possibili evoluzioni. I campionamenti avverranno tramite uno strascico, un piccolo sistema di pompaggio che consentirà di raccogliere dati a varie profondità e con prelievi di sedimenti dal fondale. I campioni verranno poi analizzati per una definizione quantitativa e qualitativa dei detriti e lo sviluppo di un modello che possa svelare la distribuzione e le concentrazioni di microplastiche nei diversi punti dell’ambito portuale. Si effettuerà un’analisi sui cefali, pesci particolarmente numerosi nei porti, per valutare l’impatto biologico di queste fibre. Verrà, quindi, analizzato il miglior modello numerico per lo studio della dinamica delle microplastiche che, abbinato allo studio climatologico, permetterà di sviluppare la previsione sulle traiettorie dei detriti plastici dispersi in mare. SPlash! informerà e divulgherà il tema e la ricerca presso l’intera popolazione delle aree interessate (e non solo), con strumenti multimediali, iniziative pubbliche e anche coinvolgendo direttamente attori economici e cittadini.

Le projet SPlash! analysera pour la première fois la présence, l'origine et les dynamiques des microplastiques dans les ports du Programme. L'étude ne traitera pas seulement le plastique flottant à la surface de la mer, mais aussi les fibres dans la colonne d'eau et sur le fond marin. La recherche fournira des données sur certains aspects inexplorés: comprendre la dynamique des microplastiques; étudier l'impact quantitatif des divers ‘sources’ de microplastiques de la terre à la mer et la distribution à différentes profondeurs dans des zones densément anthropiques. Les données fourniront – même à la communauté internationale- d'autres éléments pour mieux comprendre comment, quand et où intervenir pour réduire l'impact de cette pollution marine croissante, en tenant compte de la situation législative -national et communautaire- existant en matière et ses évolutions possibles. L'échantillonnage se fera au moyen d’un chalutage, un petit système de pompage qui permettra de recueillir des données à différentes profondeurs, et avec des prélèvements de sédiments des fonds marins. Les échantillons seront ensuite analysés pour une définition quantitative et qualitative des débris et le développement d'un modèle qui puisse révéler la distribution et les concentrations de microplastique dans les différents points du domaine portuaire. On va analyser des mulets –des poissons particulièrement nombreux dans les ports- pour évaluer l'impact biologique de ces fibres. On va donc analyser le meilleur modèle numérique pour étudier la dynamique des microplastiques et ça nous permettra, avec l'étude climatologique, de développer la prévision sur les trajectoires des débris de plastique dispersées en mer. SPlash! Informera et diffusera cette question et recherche à toute la population des zones touchées (et d'autres), avec des outils multimédias, des initiatives publiques et l’engagement directe des acteurs économiques et des citoyens
