L'industrie métallurgique, mécanique et métallique de la zone transfrontalière requiert des équipements devant résister à des contraintes de plus en plus sévères ainsi qu'à des réglementations environnementales strictes. Le chromage hexavalent - revêtement de surface permettant de réaliser d'autres revêtements résistant à la corrosion et à l'usure - est l'une des technologies les plus touchées par ces contraintes : en raison de sa toxicité, il est interdit depuis septembre 2017. Or, les alternatives ne sont pas satisfaisantes pour les entreprises qui se retrouvent ainsi en difficulté. Le projet Alt Ctrl trans vise donc à fournir des alternatives efficaces au chromage hexavalent en répondant aux besoins réels des sociétés industrielles.

The metallurgical, mechanical and metal industry in the cross-border area requires equipment that must withstand increasingly severe constraints and strict environmental regulations. Hexavalent chromium plating - the surface coating used to produce other corrosion and wear-resistant coatings - is one of the technologies most affected by these constraints: due to its toxicity, it has been banned since September 2017. However, the alternatives are not satisfactory, making life difficult for companies. The Alt Ctrl trans project therefore aims to come up with effective alternatives to hexavalent chromium plating by meeting the real needs of industrial companies.

De metallurgische, mechanische en metaalsector van de grenszone heeft machines nodig die voldoen aan steeds hogere eisen en strengere milieureglementeringen. Zeswaardig chroom, een coating die het mogelijk maakt andere coatings te realiseren die bestand zijn tegen corrosie en slijtage, is een van de technologieën die het meest getroffen zijn door deze beperkingen. Wegens zijn toxiciteit is het sinds september 2017 verboden. De alternatieven zijn evenwel niet bevredigend voor de ondernemingen, die dus in moeilijkheden verkeren. Het project Alt Ctrl Trans wil efficiënte alternatieven voor zeswaardig chroom ontwikkelen en zo inspelen op de reële behoeften van de industrie.

Achievements (FR):

Un évènement de lancement du projet a eu lieu le 26 novembre 2019 à Forem-Pigments (Strépy-Bracquegnies, BE) afin de présenter le projet au public cible. En ce qui concerne l'état d'avancement, une banque de données reprenant les entreprises potentiellement intéressées par le projet a d'abord été établie par les partenaires VOM, SIRRIS, Materia Nova, UMONS, CRITT-MDTS, afin de couvrir un public large couvrant principalement la zone éligible. Une stratégie de contacts industriels concernés par la problématique Cr VI a été mise au point et un formulaire de contact a été mis en ligne ; une vingtaine d'industriels sont actuellement intéressés par le projet. Trois axes technologiques avaient été définis pour pallier les problèmes de l'utilisation du Cr VI : Axe 1 le développement de dépôts chimiques de nickel-bore, Axe 2 de dépôts électrolytiques de chrome (trivalent) ou d'alliages, Axe 3 les dépôts d'alliages par plasma d'arc transféré. Un substrat de référence transversale - base acier - a été défini. Les substrats ont été caractérisés avant et après application des revêtements par ULille et ENSAM. La topologie de surface semble principalement déterminée par celle du substrat. La modélisation de la dureté des surfaces est en cours. Etat d'avancement de chacun des axes : Axe 1 Plusieurs activités de recherche ont été menées au sein du laboratoire UMONS en vue de développer un revêtement de nickel-bore exempt de métaux lourds. Les paramètres du procédé ont été optimisés afin d’obtenir des dépôts d’épaisseur acceptable, de garantir la stabilité du bain et d’optimiser la vitesse du dépôt. Les bains seront prochainement testés sur la ligne pilote du FOREM. Axe 2 Dans un premier temps, Materia Nova a décidé de réaliser des dépôts de chrome à partir d'un procédé commercial de chromage dur SAPHIR 40 (base Cr6+). Les travaux de recherche se sont ensuite focalisés sur l'électrodéposition d'un alliage binaire Nickel Tungstène (NiW). Ce type d'alliage permet d'atteindre de très bonnes propriétés mécaniques et anti-corrosion Une attention particulière se porte actuellement à la formulation d'une solution d'alliage ternaire « Inox ». En parallèle à ces travaux, une solution permettant le dépôt d'alliages binaire FeW est en cours de développement. La formulation de l'électrolyte a été affinée ainsi que les conditions d'application permettant d'obtenir des alliages FeW à haute teneur en W. Enfin un travail sur la formulation d'une solution d'alliage binaire NiCr a été entamée. les travaux de recherche se sont focalisés sur la production de dépôts de Ni sulfamate, NiW (2 conditions) et CrVI sur des éprouvettes de traction pour évaluer la présence de contraintes dans ces différents dépôts. Des dépôts de même nature ont été reproduits pour compléter les caractérisations réalisées par l’ENSAM-ULille. Axe 3. L'activité concernant la technologie PTA que possède le CRITT-MDTS a été entamée par des études de faisabilité. Un acier faiblement allié a été choisi comme substrat car il permet d'éviter les fissurations après dépôt. La mise en route de la torche plasma avec projection de poudre a fait l'objet d'une formation en interne. Dans un premier temps, les essais de revêtements ont été effectués avec une poudre stellite (base cobalt) bien connue au CRITT-MDTS et une poudre de chrome contenant des particules non sphériques, fournie par un parrain industriel. Enfin, nous avons commencé à préparer une chaine de galvanoplastie (collaboration Pigments Forem - Materia Nova) pour qu'elle soit opérationnelle pour les futurs tests de pré-industrialisation. Cette ligne sera mise en route à partir du mois d'octobre pour développer des démonstrateurs. Un comité de parrainage constitué d'industriels du secteur concerné a été créé pour suivre l'avancement des travaux du projet. Ce comité permet d'échanger des informations, d'apporter des idées, afin de favoriser une meilleure orientation des travaux et ce, afin de répondre au mieux aux attentes des industriels et notamment dans le domaine des pièces avec une bonne résistance à la corrosion ainsi que d’excellentes propriétés mécaniques (dureté, tribologie etc.). Le premier comité de parrainage a eu lieu le 04 décembre 2020 en visioconférence. Il était constitué de 28 participants au total (10 en France 13 versant Wallonie 3 versant Flamand et 2 HZ) dont 14 membres du projet, soit 14 contacts industriels représentant 7 entreprises 2 versant Wallonie, 3 versant France 1 CRA Vl 2 HZ (NL, Vl). Les entreprises présentes ont grandement montré leur intérêt pour participer activement à la suite du projet. Le second comité de parrainage a eu lieu à L'ENSAM le 18 11 2021 et 7 entreprises étaient représentées. Les parrains continuent de soutenir les 3 axes du projet.

Achievements (EN):

A project launch event took place on 26 November 2019 in Forem-Pigments (Strépy-Bracquegnies, BE) to present the project to the target audience. As regards the state of play, a database of companies potentially interested in the project was first established by the partners VOM, SIRRIS, Materia Nova, UMONS, CRITT-MDTS, in order to cover a wide audience covering mainly the eligible area. A strategy of industrial contacts concerned with the Cr VI issue has been developed and a contact form has been put online; about 20 industrialists are currently interested in the project. Three technological axes had been defined to address the problems of using Cr VI: Axis 1 development of nickel-bore chemical deposits, Axis 2 of electrolytic deposits of chromium (trivalent) or alloys, Axis 3 deposits of alloys by transferred arc plasma. A transverse reference substrate — steel base — has been defined. Substrates were characterised before and after application of ULille and ENSAM coatings. Surface topology seems mainly determined by that of the substrate. Surface hardness modelling is underway. State of play of each of the axes: Axis 1 Several research activities have been carried out within the UMONS laboratory to develop a nickel-bore coating free of heavy metals. Process parameters have been optimised to obtain deposits of acceptable thickness, ensure bath stability and optimise deposition speed. The baths will soon be tested on the FOREM pilot line. Axis 2 At first, Materia Nova decided to make chromium deposits from a commercial SAPHIR 40 hard chrome process (Cr6+ base). The research then focused on the electrodeposition of a Nickel Tungsten (NiW) binary alloy. This type of alloy makes it possible to achieve very good mechanical and anti-corrosion properties Special attention is currently being paid to the formulation of a ternary alloy solution “Inox”. In parallel to this work, a solution allowing the deposit of FeW binary alloys is being developed. The formulation of the electrolyte was refined as well as the application conditions to obtain high W-grade FeW alloys. Finally, work on the formulation of a NiCr binary alloy solution was initiated. the research focused on the production of Ni sulfamate, NiW (2 conditions) and CrVI deposits on tensile test pieces to assess the presence of constraints in these different deposits. Similar deposits have been reproduced to complement the characterisations carried out by ENSAM-ULille. Axis 3. The activity concerning the PTA technology owned by CRITT-MDTS has been initiated by feasibility studies. A weakly alloyed steel was chosen as the substrate because it prevents cracking after deposition. The start-up of the plasma torch with powder projection has been the subject of in-house training. As a first step, coating tests were carried out with a well-known CRITT-MDTS stellite powder (Cobalt base) and a non-spherical chromium powder supplied by an industrial sponsor. Finally, we started preparing a electroplating chain (collaboration Pigments Forem — Materia Nova) to be operational for future pre-industrialisation tests. This line will be started from October to develop demonstrators. A sponsorship committee consisting of industrialists in the sector concerned has been set up to monitor the progress of the project’s work. This committee makes it possible to exchange information, to bring ideas, in order to encourage a better orientation of the work and this, in order to best meet the expectations of industrialists and especially in the field of parts with good corrosion resistance as well as excellent mechanical properties (hardness, tribology, etc.). The first sponsorship committee took place on 4 December 2020 in videoconference. It consisted of a total of 28 participants (10 in France 13 Wallonia 3 sides Flemish and 2 HZ) including 14 members of the project, i.e. 14 industrial contacts representing 7 companies 2 sides Wallonia, 3 paying France 1 CRA Vl 2 HZ (NL, Vl). The companies present have shown a great deal of interest in actively participating in the project. The second sponsorship committee took place at ENSAM on 18 11 2021 and 7 companies were represented. The sponsors continue to support the 3 axes of the project.

Ontwikkeling van hoogtechnologische producten door een beroep te doen op competenties op uiteenlopende gebieden, vanwege van de multidisciplinaire aard van de technologische problematiek. 20 ondernemingen zullen steun ontvangen, waarvan vier op een actieve manier voor de ontwikkeling van een nieuw product of proces en acht die aan een onderzoeksproject zullen deelnemen. Organisatie van 6 gezamenlijke opleidingssessies;

Développement de nouveaux revêtements de surface de haute technologie. Améliorer la compétitivité des entreprises locales des domaines du transport et de la transformation tout en pérennisant leur activité en période d'interdiction du chrome hexavalent. Mobilisation d'un consortium transfrontalier de partenaires constituant un centre de compétences : collaboration des cetres de Recherche existants pour transférer les connaissances vers le public cible ; centres de compétence de formation proches de l'industrie ou des étudiants pour communiquer et former. Des collaborations industrielles pourront également être envisagées. Apport de conseils techniques aux entreprises à travers le site web.

Development of new high-tech surface coatings. Improving the competitiveness of local transport and processing companies while maintaining their activity during the hexavalent chromium ban. Mobilisation of a cross-border consortium of partners in the form of a competence centre: collaboration of existing research centres to transfer knowledge to the target audience; training competence centres close to industry or students to communicate and train. Industrial collaborations may also be considered. Provision of technical advice to companies through the website.

Ontwikkeling van nieuwe, hoogtechnologische coatings. Het concurrentievermogen van de lokale ondernemingen in de transport- en de verwerkingsindustrie verbeteren en het voortbestaan van hun activiteit garanderen nu zeswaardig chroom verboden is. Vorming van een grensoverschrijdend consortium van partners, dat als competentiecentrum werkt: samenwerking tussen de bestaande onderzoekscentra om de kennis over te dragen op het doelpubliek; competentiecentra in nauw contact met de industrie of de studenten met het oog op communicatie en opleiding. Ook industriële samenwerkingen zijn te overwegen. Verstrekken van technisch advies aan de ondernemingen via de website.
