The fruit and vegetable sector is one of the largest consumers of plant protection products. The development of organic farming and the application of “zero phyto” methods in our regions is an economic, human health and environmental protection challenge. To meet these challenges and consumer concerns, it is necessary to design new production systems, which is what the project aims to do by combining complementary skills within the cross-border basin. The objective of this project is to identify, validate and transmit practical keys to be able to produce fruit and vegetables without any spraying of plant protection products. Different solutions exist but there is still a lack of real understanding of the agronomic aspects, crop diversification, physical control, knowledge of key diseases and pests, alternative methods of protection without inputs, etc. Proven methods are disseminated to all stakeholders in the sector, from producers to consumers.

Le secteur des fruits et légumes est l’un des plus gros consommateurs de produits phytopharmaceutiques. Le développement de l’agriculture biologique et l’application de méthodes « zéro phyto » dans nos régions constituent un enjeu économique, de santé humaine et de protection de l’environnement. Pour répondre à ces enjeux et aux préoccupations des consommateurs, il est nécessaire de concevoir de nouveaux systèmes de production, ce que vise à faire le projet en unissant les compétences complémentaires au sein du bassin transfrontalier. L’objectif de ce projet est d’identifier, de valider et de transmettre des clés pratiques pour pouvoir produire des fruits et légumes sans aucune pulvérisation de produits phytopharmaceutiques. Différentes solutions existent mais restent méconnues sur les aspects agronomiques, la diversification des productions, les luttes physiques, la connaissance des maladies et des ravageurs clefs, les méthodes alternatives de protection sans intrants, etc. Les moyens faisant leurs preuves sont diffusés à tous les acteurs du secteur, du producteur au consommateur.

De fruit- en groentesector is een van de grootste consumenten van fytofarmaceutische producten. De ontwikkeling van de biolandbouw en de toepassing van 'zero-fytomethoden' in onze regio’s zijn een uitdaging voor de economie, de menselijke gezondheid en de milieubescherming. Om een antwoord te bieden op deze uitdagingen en de bezorgdheid van de consumenten, moet men nieuwe productiesystemen ontwikkelen. Dat is wat dit project wil doen, door complementaire competenties in het grensoverschrijdende bekken te verenigen. Dit project wil praktische manieren definiëren, valideren en doorgeven om fruit en groente te kunnen produceren zonder ze met fytofarmaceutische producten te besproeien. Er bestaan verschillende oplossingen, maar er is weinig bekend over de agronomische aspecten, de teeltdiversificatie, fysische bestrijdingsmethoden, de kennis van de ziekten en belangrijkste plagen, de alternatieve beschermingsmethoden zonder producten enz. De middelen die hun dienst bewijzen, worden verspreid onder alle actoren van de sector, van de producent tot de consument.

Achievements (EN):

The previous semesters were initially dedicated to the implementation of the strategies and the organisation of the project. The various meetings allowed the partners to discuss these themes and plan the realisation of various tools. In this way the website of the project was created (https://www.zerophyto-interreg.eu/) after using an external service provider specialised in this type of service. A document sharing tool has also been set up to facilitate exchanges between partners. Working strategies for bibliographic and participatory research as well as field experiments and website feeding were discussed and started to be implemented. The partners started a bibliographical research work focusing on the different levers addressed by the project. Relevant references are collected on a specific sharing tool (Zotero) and will be sorted. Various communication activities also took place: organisation of field visits, participation in trade fairs or technical days, creation of a poster, writing a press article,... Unfortunately, government measures related to the Covid-19 outbreak have severely disrupted the organisation of all types of events, making it virtually impossible for partners to take advantage of the latter to communicate about the project at fairs, trade fairs, technical days, etc. So far, events organised by partners or those in which the partners participated have reached more than 1000 professionals in the sector. Experiments have been carried out, as far as possible in parallel with several partners, on the basis of knowledge and/or experience already acquired. Indeed, as the participatory research and bibliographic research work has not been completed, the partners have not yet been able to come up with enough interesting elements to base experiments on them. Some of these experiments have been repeated in order to confirm the first results. In particular, methods to control leek cecidomyia, apple holocampe and apple carpocapse were tested in fruit crops. Various cabbage fly and caterpillar net systems and crop associations in the fight against aphid in different marsh crops have also been experimented with. The different techniques and methods tested so far have been inspired by the experience and exchange between the partners. Most of the methods used are inspired by trapping techniques already used for monitoring or on a small scale and adapted to a massive struggle. Others have already been tested elsewhere in Europe or around the world and have also been adapted to our regional conditions. The last experiments will take place in the last semester. It will also be devoted to processing, sharing and disseminating results to the public. Government measures related to Covid-19 also disrupted or led to the cancellation of certain tests, in particular on the French side for which these measures were more restrictive than on the other two slopes, in relation to travel in particular. For the purpose of participatory research, a communication project with amateur gardeners and communities was carried out to ask them to share with us their experiences and innovative successes. The pre-draft had a form of inquiry which, following internal discussions, was revised to take a much simpler form to be finalised in semester 4. In addition, the French and Walloon sides and to a lesser extent in Flanders had already disseminated its action and some replies have already been received. This call for ideas from amateur producers and gardeners gathered his first testimonies, some of which are very enriching. The work of compiling and disseminating the elements thus collected will begin in the last semester.

Les semestres précédents ont été, dans un premier temps, dédiés à la mise en place des stratégies et de l'organisation du projet. Les différentes réunions ont permis aux partenaires de discuter sur ces thématiques et de planifier la réalisation de divers outils. De cette manière le site internet du projet a été créé (https://www.zerophyto-interreg.eu/) après avoir fait appel à un prestataire externe spécialisé dans ce genre de services. Un outil de partage de documents a également été mis en place afin de faciliter les échanges entre partenaires. Les stratégies de travail pour la recherche bibliographique et participative ainsi que pour les expérimentations de terrain et l'alimentation du site internet ont été abordées et ont commencée à être mise en place. Les partenaires ont débuté un travail de recherches bibliographiques axé sur les différents leviers abordés par le projet. Les références pertinentes sont rassemblées sur un outil de partage spécifique (Zotero) et feront l’objet d’un tri. Différentes activités de communication ont également eu lieu : organisation de visites de terrain, participation à des salons ou journées techniques, création d'un poster, rédaction d'un article de presse, ... Malheureusement les mesures gouvernementales liées à l’épidémie de covid-19 ont fortement perturbées l’organisation de tous les types d’évènements, rendant pratiquement impossible pour les partenaires de profiter de ces derniers afin de communiquer sur le projet lors de foires, salons, journées techniques, etc. Jusqu’à présent les évènements organisés par les partenaires ou ceux auxquels les partenaires ont participé ont permis de toucher plus de 1000 professionnels du secteur. Des expérimentations ont été réalisées, dans la mesure du possible en parallèle chez plusieurs partenaires, sur base de connaissances et/ou d'expériences déjà acquises. En effet, le travail de recherche participative et de recherches bibliographiques n’étant pas achevés, les partenaires n’ont pas encore pu en ressortir suffisamment d’éléments intéressants pour baser des expériences dessus. Certaines de ces expérimentations ont été répétées afin de confirmer les premiers résultats. Notamment des méthodes de lutte contre la cécidomyie des poirettes, l’hoplocampe du pommier et le carpocapse du pommier ont été testées en cultures fruitières. Divers systèmes de filets contre la mouche et les chenilles du chou et des associations de cultures dans la lutte contre le puceron dans différentes cultures maraichères ont également été expérimentées. Les différentes techniques et méthodes testées jusqu’à présents ont été inspirées de l’expérience et d’échange entre les partenaires. La plupart des méthodes utilisées sont inspirées de techniques de piégeage déjà employées pour le monitoring ou à petite échelle et adaptées à une lutte massive. D’autres ont déjà été testées ailleurs en Europe ou dans le monde et ont également été adaptées à nos conditions régionales. Les dernières expérimentations vont se dérouler lors du dernier semestre. Celui-ci va également être consacré au traitement, à la mise en commun des résultats et à la diffusion de ceux-ci vers le public. Les mesures gouvernementales liées au covid-19 ont également perturbé ou provoqué l’annulation de la réalisation de certains essais notamment sur le versant français pour lequel ces mesures étaient davantage restrictives que sur les deux autres versants, par rapport aux déplacements notamment. Dans un but de recherche participative, un projet de communication envers les jardiniers amateurs et les collectivités a été réalisé pour leur demander de nous partager leurs expériences et leurs réussites innovantes. Le pré-projet avait une forme d’enquête qui, suite à des discussions internes a été révisé pour prendre une forme nettement plus simple qui sera finalisée lors du semestre 4. Par ailleurs, les versants français et wallon et dans une moindre mesure en Flandres, avaient déjà diffusé son action et quelques réponses ont déjà été reçues. Cet appel à idées auprès des producteurs et jardiniers amateurs a permis de recueillir ses premiers témoignages dont certains sont très enrichissants. Le travail de compilation et de diffusion des éléments ainsi recueillis va commencer lors du dernier semestre.

Develop new non-chemical alternative methods to pesticides; raise awareness and disseminate the results so that target audiences can appropriate techniques and methods geared towards “zero-phyto”. To secure a long-term participatory approach that integrates all stakeholders (producers, laymen, researchers, technicians, etc.) in a knowledge-sharing network.

Expected Outputs (FR):

Développer de nouvelles méthodes non chimiques alternatives aux pesticides ; Sensibiliser et diffuser les résultats pour que les publics-cibles s'approprient les techniques et méthodes tendant vers le "zéro-phyto". Pérenniser une approche participative qui intègre tous les acteurs (producteurs, amateurs, chercheurs, techniciens,..) dans un réseau de partage de connaissances.

Expected Outputs (NL):

Nieuwe, niet-chemische methoden ontwikkelen als alternatief voor pesticiden; Sensibiliseringsacties voeren en de resultaten verspreiden opdat het doelpubliek zich de technieken en methoden in de richting van zero fyto eigen kan maken. Een participatieve aanpak bestendigen, die alle actoren integreert (producenten, amateurtuinders, onderzoekers, technici, ...) in een netwerk voor kennisuitwisseling.
