Objectif général : Le projet C5 a pour but de créer un centre de recherche sans frontières permettant d’améliorer la connaissance des phénomènes de combustion afin d’optimiser l’usage des carburants (rendement des moteurs et consommation). Le projet se penchera également sur l’étude de la formation de polluants dans les moteurs conventionnels. Une attention particulière sera portée aux combustibles renouvelables pour lesquels il est encore difficile, aujourd’hui, de maitriser les émissions de polluants. Le projet poursuit un travail conjoint, initié lors d’un projet précédent financé par le programme Interreg III, “Moteur intelligent II” qui a permis aux partenaires d’identifier des domaines de recherche communs et des environnements de recherche complémentaires. Principales actions : - Comparaison des mesures expérimentales (Rouen) et des prédictions numériques (Brighton) relatives à l’évaporation des gouttes de combustibles. - Etude de la structure et de la vitesse de propagation des flammes, dans une chambre de combustion à volume constant et dans un moteur optique. - Développement de nouveaux diagnostics, méthodologie et système intelligents d’analyse des données sur la formation de polluants. - Création d’un workshop Franco-britannique annuel sur la combustion dans les moteurs.

Description (EN):

Main objective : The main objective of the project is to establish a cross-channel centre of excellence to improve the understanding of combustion processes for an optimised use of fuels (engine efficiency and consumption). C5 will also look into the formation of pollutants in conventional engines. Special attention will be given to renewable fuels, which still produce unintended pollutants. Earlier, the partners successfully conducted the project “The Intelligent Engine II”, financed by the INTERREG IIIA programme, and identified a range of shared objectives and complementary research environments. Main actions : - Comparison of experimental data (Rouen) with numerical models (Brighton) regarding fuel droplets evaporation. - Investigation of flame structure and propagation speed, in a constant volume chamber and an optical engine. - Development of novel diagnostic techniques, methodology, and intelligent data processing systems regarding the formation of pollutants. - Creation of an annual Franco-British workshop on automotive combustion

Achievements (FR):

Principales réalisations / résultats : - Réalisation d’une plaquette de présentation bilingue du projet. - 3 affiches présentées lors de la Fête de la Science (novembre 2009). - 2 présentations relatives au projet dans le cadre de la conférence AAC09 à Bangkok (Thaïlande - novembre 2009). - 6 présentations dans le cadre du premier Workshop du projet (décembre 2009). - 1 article sur le projet dans la CORIA-Lettre n°9 de janvier 2010. - 2 présentations dans le cadre du Workshop CAE (avril 2010). - 7 présentations dans le cadre du second Workshop du projet (juin 2010). - 3 publications dans des journaux et revues spécialisés.

Main achievements : - Creation of the project presentation leaflet in French and in English. - 3 posters presented during C5’s participation to the Fête de la Science (November 2009. - 2 presentations related to the project within the framework of AAC09 Conference in Bangkok (Thailand – November 2009). - 6 presentations within the framework of first project Workshop (December 2009). - 1 article about the project in the CORIA-Lettre #9 on January 2010. - 2 presentations within the framework of the CAE Workshop (April 2010). - 7 presentations within the framework of 2nd project Workshop (June 2010). - 3 publications in specialized journals.
