Description (EN):

European Textile and Clothing is a most relevant economical source for the EU, accounting for 4% of the total added value of the manufacturing sector, with 173.000 companies and a turnover of 165 billion €. Its competitiveness is linked to increased investments in innovation and research - both public and private - which are key drivers for European companies to lead the market in the coming years. Due to its enormous environmental impact, sustainability and environment-friendly production is emerging as a new drivers of textile process, product innovation and technology development. The overall objective of the project is to generate a policy change in the implementation of regional policies and programmes of the Structural Funds related to the strengthening of research, technological development and innovation to assure the sustainability of the T&C sector of the partner regions. It will be achieved through policy learning and capacity building activities on public policies supporting innovative, green and sustainable T&C production and processes. The learning potential embedded in interregional exchange will result in the uptake of new good practices and projects by the partner regions enabling to support excellence in R&D, to promote investments by enterprises, to develop innovative skills of T&C stakeholders, and in a deeper integration between research and innovation policies for the sector’s sustainability. Sustainability-driven research and innovation will concern primarily the production processes and product development, by: • improving recycling and reducing waste disposal, • decreasing water consumption and allowing energy saving, • reducing the environmental impact of the chemical substances used by the sector, • accompanying the industrial reconversion efforts towards smart sustainable textiles, • promoting the utilization of natural fibers and favoring the use of local or km 0 raw materials, • fostering eco-creativity and new applications.

Achievements (EN):

In terms of activities, the project has organised a total of 84 policy learning events. It has also identified 13 good practices, produced 9 action plans and led to the increased capacity of 45 people. In terms of results, the project has succeeded in improving 10 regional development policies for a total amount of funds influenced of EUR 6,144,793. 73.

Expected Results (EN):

The overall objective of the project is to generate a policy change in the implementation of regional policies and programmes of the Structural Funds linking the strengthening of research, technological development and innovation with the sustainability of the T&C sector in the partner regions. The aim is to improve the policy instruments of the partners to support the creation, management and upgrade of R&D and innovation infrastructures in the T&C sector with sustainable approaches, enfolding ecological, safety, ethical, social and economic values. The project’s sub-objective is to support the policy improvement and capacity building of the partners’ regions to develop R&D and innovation excellence in the T&C sector oriented towards the sustainability of the production processes and product development, related to: • Recycling in textile & waste disposal, • Water consumption & energy saving, sustainable company organisations, • New sustainable chemistry, including reduction of chemicals, • Smart textiles & new ways of production, • Eco-creativity, natural fibres, short value chains, • New materials and new applications. The overall objective will be achieved through policy learning and capacity building activities on public policies supporting innovative, green and sustainable T&C production & processes. The learning potential embedded in interregional exchange will result in the uptake of new good practices and projects by the partner regions enabling to support excellence in R&D, to promote investments by enterprises, to develop innovative skills of T&C stakeholders and in a deeper integration between R&D policies for the sector’s sustainability, to be achieved through the Action Plans. The project provides a valuable contribution to the development of regional innovation systems as it will commit the different stakeholders to increase their innovation levels and regions to increase their capability to launch policies and projects in the field of T&C sustainability.

Expected Outputs (EN):

The main result expected by the project will be the improvement of policy instruments related to the Structural Funds at regional / national level as a direct consequence of the policy learning and capacity building process undertaken by the partners. This process will allow to embed into the ERDF Structural Funds programmes, the good practices exchanged by the partners and their implementation through the Action Plans developed. It will impact the sustainability-driven research and innovation in the T&C sector, concerning primarily the production processes and product development, by: • improving recycling and reducing waste disposal; • decreasing water consumption and allowing energy saving; • reducing the environmental impact of the chemical substances used by the sector; • accompanying the industrial reconversion efforts towards smart sustainable textiles; • promoting the utilization of natural fibers and favoring the use of local or km 0 raw materials; • fostering eco-creativity and new applications. Other expected results will be: a well managed project reaching its objectives, without serious conflict between the partners, without irregularities and with smooth reporting to the programme and an efficient and effective communication and dissemination of the project's activities and achievements to regional and local policy makers through interregional events and innovative information channels. Long terms impacts will provide for: the increase of the research and its sustainability dimension, by promoting the realization of industrial programs with strategic interest that can produce an amelioration for the whole regional development, the creation of stronger connections between R&D and the industrial SMEs, the increase of productivity as SMEs will be able to reach new markets and customers thanks to promotion, international connections and actions of internationalization. The project will also contribute to the reduction of regional disparities throughout Europe by strengthening regional innovation, developing a strong network of collaboration between the involved research centers and public authorities, as a permanent platform to exchange good practices and information. The amelioration of the dimension, both structural and qualitative, of the existing infrastructure for technological transfer will encourage the creation of the network and the consequent coordination and cooperation between the R&D centers involved in the project. The main outputs of the project will be: 12 policy learning events organised (thematic seminars and policy brokerages), 10 staff exchange events, 12+ good practices identified, 18 local stakeholders meetings organized each semester, 9 action plans developed, 1 Kick off Meeting; 1 Communication Plan; 1 Project Website; 1 Brochure (3000 copies); 6 joint press release; 7 videos/animations; 1 final publication; 1 Signed SC; 1 Signed PA; 6 Steering Committee meeting with Minutes; 8 PRs; 1 Final Report;
