Description (EN): There are an estimated c.2.5 million potentially contaminated sites across Europe, of which at least 14% require remediation. Managing contaminated land costs around €6.5 billion per year. 42% of this comes from public budgets.
Partners from 5 regions have identified the potential of connecting new and future materials and clean technology to natural heritage protection, in order to address these environmental and economic problems. Through TANIA, they support wide and effective application of nanoremediation for contaminated soil and water.
Nanoremediation is a low-cost, safe and effective technique to clean up pollution, improve current treatments and prevent future contamination. Effective uptake is limited by issues concerning technological novelty (need for further R&I, lack of standardised methodologies, patenting and pilot applications, understanding) and the governance model (engaging various policy departments and multi-disciplinary stakeholders).
TANIA uses interregional exchange and participation of stakeholders from environmental and innovation fields to address these limitations. Regions are relative newcomers to the concept of nanoremediation. They compare different experiences on techniques to treat contamination, innovation in environmental protection and governance. They improve ERDF policy instruments, thanks to Action Plans defining measures to support more and better funding for nanoremediation, coordinate governance models and evaluation criteria and insert integration between innovation and environmental protection in their strategic focus.
TANIA creates new business opportunities for enterprises promoting nanoremediation products and services. TANIA raises awareness on contamination of EU natural heritage, its effects and the potential of nanoremediation.
TANIA promotes long-term, sustainable regional development and competitiveness: better environmental conditions, consequent improvements to health and increased business opportunities.

It has also identified 12 good practices, produced 5 action plans and led to the increased capacity of 37 people. In terms of results, the project has succeeded in improving 7 regional development policies for a total amount of funds influenced of EUR 297,290.

Expected Results (EN): TANIA’s overall objective is to improve treatment of the ever-growing number of contaminated sites in Europe, by improving design and implementation of policy measures capable of supporting uptake and diffusion of nanoremediation.
Nanoremediation is an innovative, low cost technology, with can save time and money in comparison to current, lengthy treatment. It uses secure technologies, with minimal risks associated with production and use. It offers both environmental and economic opportunities, through creation of new market opportunities and jobs.
Yet some challenges limit diffusion of nanoremediation. Regional policy makers must work together and with cross-disciplinary stakeholders to improve a policy framework that:
• Supports R&I on identification and production of eco-compatible and eco-sustainable nanotechnology for treatment of contaminated soil and water;
• Defines a standardised methodology to evaluate effectiveness, economic sustainability and environmental safety and impact of nanoremediation, within the context of National and EU regulations (e.g. REACH on packaging and labelling of chemical substances) and strategies (e.g. EU Soil Thematic Strategy);
• Supports patenting and pilot applications of NM and NP developed using safety-by-design concepts;
• Provides incentives for in-situ use of NM and NP to treat contaminated soil and water; • Raises awareness on the process of nanoremediation, its benefits and means of application.
To this end, TANIA poses 4 sub-objectives that mirror the project approach. These are to use interregional exchange to:
• Set the scene, by analysing nanoremediation in the context of regional needs regarding contaminated sites, techniques and policy;
• Merge experiences, to identify practical solutions to identified challenges;
• develop Action Plans to turn learning into road maps for policy improvement;
• implement Action Plans with regional funding and monitor the process to ensure continued progress and improvement.

• 10 TANIA Interregional Events, bringing together TANIA project stakeholders for interactive workshops, expert sessions, study visits and peer reviews;
• 10 TANIA bilateral exchange events, supporting transfer of Good Practicesbetween regions within the framework of Action Plan development;
• 5 TANIA Project Stakeholder groups, working together to support regional and interregional learning and Action Plan development;
• Identification of min.8 Good Practices related to policy instruments supporting the application of innovative techniques to treat contaminated sites and definition of means to transfer good practices within regional Action Plans;
• 5 regional Action Plans detailing improvements to selected policy instruments designed by the end of Phase 1, in close cooperation with and approved by regional stakeholders;
• Implementation of various elements of the Action Plans in 5 regions during Phase 2, flanked by monitoring of progress and input;
• Increased capacity in design, implementation and monitoring of policy instruments among at least 63 TANIA project stakeholders.
TANIA’s expected short term results, thanks to the outputs and interregional exchange, are:
• Improved policy instruments supporting nanoremediation in 5 European regions. Improvements will cover three identified typologies at varying levels in partner regions:
- New projects: more and better targeted funding for multi-disciplinary R&I, pilot projects and start-up activities supporting innovation in remediation of contaminated sites, particularly nanoremediation;
- Management: improved governance models that encourage integration among different policy sectors (R&I/production and environment) and produce criteria to judge new projects;
- Strategic focus: increased emphasis on integration between innovation and environmental protection.
• New business opportunities for enterprises and start-ups interested in developing, patenting and marketing products and services related to nanoremediation. These could range from clean-tech products, to training, nanomaterial production / adaption and application, ICT support tool to monitor remediation progress;
• Greater awareness on the issues that TANIA addresses: the growing problem of contamination of EU natural heritage, its effects and potential of nanotechnology to address it in a cost-effective, safe and high-performing manner.
TANIA’s mid to long term results fit within the overall objective of promoting sustainable regional development and competitiveness. TANIA regions should benefit from:
• Better environmental conditions in areas targeted for remediation, which include urban / sub-urban areas, (ex)industrial sites, coastal areas, agricultural areas;
• Consequent improvement in health conditions of population living and working in previously contaminated areas;
• Increased opportunities for business development in a dynamic sector, addressing one of today’s grand societal challenges.
