The cross border problems are the tourist potentials not sufficiently exploited of both areas that need to be joint together into a common tourist offer. The common challenge is to establish a permanent, high-quality tourism destination management based on the valorization of cultural heritage. The project approach in addressing the common challenges is the development of cultural heritage based on "Becharac and Ganga" – the forms of folk songs protected by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage. Both towns have protected the names "Becharac Museum" in Pleternica and "Ganga Museum" in Tomislavgrad as intellectual property (label) and as such are unique in CRO and BiH. This excellent foundation for the restoration and preservation of cultural and historical heritage is also an ideal opportunity to develop cross-border tourism and cultural events. The project outputs include a diversified tourism offer and new tourism products through cross-border approach and set up of the management and sustainability of cultural heritage. This contributes to the economic development of the area and increases the number of visitors. The target groups directly related to the project are the project implementers, local residents, tourists and visitors attracted by this new tourist offer, tourist operators who will be directly responsible for the promotion of the new touristic products, associations and cultural clubs implementing the local events. Target groups indirectly influenced by the project are the SMEs and family businesses offering their original products to tourists, eno-gastronomy, catering business and others having a positive impact on economic development of the towns. The added value is to strengthen the long-standing good relations between the partners, exchange the knowledge and experience and create the joint tourist infrastructure and cross-border tourism products based on valorization of unique heritage Becharac and Ganga.

Achievements (EN):

A night of dancing and singing Becharac & Ganga: After inaugurating the Square of Ganga in Tomislavgrad, the city of Pleternica organized a ceremonial promotion of their newly built square as part of the TV show „Lijepom našom“. In an effort to introduce new tourist offer based on the region’s rich cultural heritage, partners from the Becharac & Ganga project, co-financed within the Priority Axis 3 of the Programme, set up a project idea dealing with regional folk songs protected by UNESCO – bećarac and ganga. Partners from Pleternica (CRO) and Tomislavgrad (BiH) have recently finished construction works of two squares named after these popular folk songs: the Square of Bećarac in Pleternica and Square of Ganga in Tomislavgrad. The added value of the newly built square in Pleternica gave a new appearance to the town and was recognized by the media. Square of Bećarac was chosen for filming of „Lijepom našom“, a well-known Croatian TV show covering traditional folk music, dance and gastronomy throughout Croatia. The filming was set on 5 September and attracted more than 3.000 participants who came to see Pleternica’s new social center. In addition to the musical part of the programme, City of Pleternica presented Basket of Pleternica – a combination of local products from family farms of Pleternica area. This is part of partners’ plan to brand Pleternica and Tomislavgrad as new destinations, which offer quality local products. Cultural and artistic societies from Pleternica and Tomislavgrad were featured as well. Becharac & Ganga inaugurates new square in Tomislavgrad: After winning a prize at the Global India International Film Festival for best documentary film, the Becharac & Ganga carried on with project implementation and constructed the Square of Ganga in Tomislavgrad. The Becharac & Ganga project, dedicated to introduce new tourist offer based on the region’s rich cultural heritage, used ERDF and IPA II co-financing to construct new public infrastructure in Tomislavgrad. After 24 months of intensive construction works including constructing the city square, reconstructing the building of the Cultural Information Center and equipping the modern visitors center, works amounting 520.000 EUR have now been completed. All these actions have been implemented in order to protect intangible cultural heritage of the cross border region and simultaneously create an impact on local economies with new and diversified touristic products in Tomislavgrad and Pleternica. Project partners from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia welcomed a great number of visitors at the inauguration ceremony held on 28 June 2019 at Tomislavgrad’s new square, which was followed by a cultural programme and gastronomic fair inspired by the traditional cultural heritage unique to this area. The new square, titled Trg gange i hajdučke družine in national language, is now a starting point for all visitors and tourists coming to discover the culture and gastronomy of Tomislavgrad and its region. Finally, another inauguration is expected in Slavonia in August, where project partners from Pleternica will soon inaugurate the Square of Bećarac and further develop the cross-border tourism and attract more tourists to these parts of Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Expected Results (EN): Increase in arrivals of non-residents staying in hotels and similar establishments

Expected Outputs (EN):

Expected project results are: 1. Set-up a system of destination management based on valorization of Becharac and Ganga songs and a diversified and branded joint cultural and tourist offer. 2. Promoters of tourism services improved their professional knowledge and skills. 3. Improved tourism infrastructure in Pleternica and Tomislavgrad. In the previous year (2015), there were xxx arrivals and xxx overnight stays registered in Pleternica, and xxx arrivals and xxx overnight stays registered in Tomislavgrad. Considering the great tourist potential of both of these areas, this data is not satisfactory. The project will affect the increase in these currently recorded data. The improved unique tourist infrastructure based on cultural heritage will create a distinctive cultural tourism destination of Bećarac and Ganga. It is realistic to expect the increase in number of visitors by 10% compared to the previous year. This will bring a substantial increase in revenues from tourism activities and the expected further increase in the following years due to the established quality destination management. Promoters of tourism services with the improved and newly acquired knowledge will give visitors more comprehensive and higher quality tourist offer. The project results will affect the attraction of new visitors and tourists and their longer stays (overnight), as reflected in the increase in arrivals of nonresidents staying in hotels and similar establishments.
