Description (EN):

The project’s main objective is to increase the number of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest incidents that are effectively managed. More specifically, the project aims to: - Raise awareness on the seriousness of cardiac arrest incidents & inform for ways that they can be prevented &/or effectively managed. - Improve early response readiness through mass training of citizens, as well as training of trainers (medical/ paramedical staff). - Improve capacities for effective management through the provision of AEDs (Automatic External Defibrillators) in selected city spots. - Improve the life support services provided by local & regional health care units. - Increase the overall capacity for life support & first aid provision on city level & reduce the losses of human lives. - Develop an application of the Safe Heart Cities program adapted in the context of the city-scape in the cross-border area & promote it on national & cross-border level. - Enhance cooperation in life support issues & issues related to cardiovascular diseases. - Improve quality of life in the Programme area.

Achievements (EN):

Improved response to cardiac arrest cases: Automatic external defibrillators were placed at strategic points at the Municipality of Kalamaria and at Ohrid, to reduce the response time to cardiac arrest emergencies. Improved Medical Equipment: The Coronary Unit of "Ag. Pavlos" Hospital, the Cardiology Intensive Care Unit of "Ippokrateio" Hospital, and the Institute of Prevention, Treatment and Rehabilitation of Cardiovascular Diseases "Sv. Stefan” Ohrid installed monitoring equipment for ICU patients, while health centers, municipal and local clinics also procured state of the art equipment. The Public Institute of Health of Ohrid and the Institute "Sv. Stefan” also procured two fully equipped ambulances. Certified BLS, ILS and BLS-I training seminars. More than 2,326 people were trained in life support on both sides of the border. At the same time, the partners procured with manekins for the continuation of the training after the end of the project. In Greece: citizens received the internationally recognized "Basic Life Support-BLS" certification health professionals were certified in the Intermediary Life Support – ILS were trained as Basic Life Support instructors.
