Contribution to wider strategies and policies:

  • EuropeanGreenDeal The European Green Deal is the new growth strategy launched in 2019 that aims to transform the EU into a fair and prosperous society, with a modern, resource-efficient and competitive economy where there are no net emissions of greenhouse gases in 2050 and where economic growth is decoupled from resource use.
  • The Green Deal is an overarching and comprehensive strategy that contributes to implement the United Nation’s 2030 Agenda and the sustainable development goals.
  • The Project is specifically aligned and contributing to the following elements of the Green Deal: the mobilisation of all actors for a climate neutral and circular economy; the mobilising research and fostering of innovation recognising that conventional approaches to innovation policy are not sufficient and pushing for more transformative innovation paradigm; the EU support to its immediate neighbours in the Western Balkans and with the Southern Neighbourhood; the involvement and commitment of the public and of all stakeholders recognised as crucial to the success of the European Green Deal

  • MediterraneanSeaBasin The Initiative for the sustainable development of the blue economy in the western Mediterranean (WetMed) was launched in 2017 with the purpose to foster sustainable blue growth and jobs, improve safety and security and preserve ecosystems and biodiversity in the western Mediterranean region. Building on the Union for the Mediterranean process and its Ministerial Declaration on the Blue Economy adopted on 17 November 2015, the Initiative was jointly designed by the 5+5 dialogue States with the Directorate-General for Fisheries and Maritime Affairs (DG MARE) and the Union for the Mediterranean Secretariat. It focuses mainly on the seas and coasts surrounding Algeria, France, Italy, Libya, Malta, Mauritania, Morocco, Portugal, Spain and Tunisia, but addressing the marine and coastal areas as interconnected systems and with a Framework for Action that remains open to other partners in the Mediterranean region.
  • Two of the three goals of the Framework for Action (2. A smart and resilient blue economy; 3. Better governance of the sea) are totally in line with the Mission 1 thematic focus and the ISO1 content.
  • Even if the IDP scope is not limited to blue economy, it is central in Mediterranean cooperation especially when looking at the Southern and Eastern Shores.
  • Effective collaboration is already in place between WestMed and the Euro-Med Programme but also specifically with Project partners and associate organisations. These relationships will be enhanced and further developed with the Project, involving WestMed in the coordination process and in the Institutional Sounding Board. The thematic contribution will depend more on the thematic project that will be selected, but attention will be ensured to capitalise ongoing cooperation (i.e. the two MED Innovation strategic projects).
  • Other english
  • Other The BlueMed Research and Innovation Initiative is an intergovernmental regional-scale initiative launched in 2014 during the Italian Presidency of the European Union, aiming to advance a shared vision for a healthier, productive, resilient, better-known and valued Mediterranean Sea. It addresses research and innovation through a multi-disciplinary approach, linking economy, environment and humans, to build sustainable Blue Growth by means of networks of actors and international science diplomacy efforts. Since 2017, with the signature of the Valletta Declaration6, the Initiative is formally joined by 16 EU and non-EU Mediterranean countries and steered by the Euro-Mediterranean Group of Senior Officials BlueMed Working Group (GSO BlueMed WG), co-chaired by the European Commission and the co-chair of the Union of the Mediterranean and supported by the Secretariat of the Union of the Mediterranean.
  • The GSO BlueMed WG endorsed at first the BlueMed Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda7 (SRIA) and then this BlueMed Implementation Plan.
  • Even if the IDP scope is not limited to blue economy, it will contribute to Bluemed initiative and will benefit from a close collaboration with its representatives, also thinking to the new Mediterranean Lighthouse of the Horizon Europe Mission 'Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030' (that is partially building on the BlueMed Pilot Initiative on Healthy Plastic-free Mediterranean Sea).
  • Other english
  • Other The Partnership on Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Area (PRIMA) develops solutions for a more sustainable management of water and agri-food systems in the Mediterranean basin. It is a ten-year initiative (2018-2028), partly funded by EU's research and innovation programme and participated by 19 countries from both shores of the Mediterranean. PRIMA is funding projects contributing to sustainable use of natural resources, economic growth and stability in the Mediterranean.
  • The Prima Secretariat will be involved in the TAB to explore synergies and exchanges between the Euro-Med Mission 1 community and the PRIMA project partners.
