There is an increasing interest in old horticultural plant cultivars and their products as natural and cultural heritage objects across the Europe as well in Latvia and Lithuania. Potential tourists in Programme area are lost due to lack of information, absence of developed routes. Potential objects with horticultural heritage are not prepared for tourists needs. The overall objective of the project is to increase attractiveness and accessibility of old horticultural plant collections as cultural and natural heritage. The best experience and specific competences of research institutes, countryside tourism associations, and museums from both countries will be combined for achievement of project aims and target groups: public, national and international tourism service providers, educational organisations, public authorities, SMEs. Project will develop a new tourism product - Heritage garden tour with 6 route itineraries, aiming on awareness for preservation of natural heritage horticultural plants. Heritage processing products from fruits and vegetables will be adapted to modern needs. Routes enriched with processing product demonstration will help to overcome tourism seasonality. Heritage gardens tourism product development guidelines will be a helpful guide for horticulture tourism providers in order to diversify their services. Tourism map of Heritage garden tour will be created, suitable for cycling and driving with relevant descriptions of clustering services: sites to visit, available services, including food and accommodation. During the project, sustainable improvement of infrastructure of cultural and natural heritage objects will be performed and a historical orchard developed at Rundale Palace museum, attractive information for visitors established at the heritage fruit, vegetable and flowering plant collections of the Institutes of Horticulture in both countries. Enriched collections will serve recreational, educational and research purposes. Two brochures, a booklet and flyers will be prepared for dissemination of project achievements and information on natural and cultural heritage objects of Latvia and Lithuania, their historical value showing need of preservation of horticultural objects.

Palielinās interese par senām dārza augu šķirnēm un produktiem kā dabas un kultūras mantojuma daļu visā Eiropā,t.sk. Lietuvā un Latvijā. Šobrīd programmas reģionā tūristi uzturas salīdzinoši nelielu laiku, jo trūkst informācijas un attīstītu tematisko maršrutu. Nozīmīgi dārzkopības mantojuma objekti nav sagatavoti tūristu vajadzībām. Projekta kopīgais mērķis ir vairot seno dārzaugu kolekciju pievilcību un pieejamību. Zinātnisko institūtu, lauku tūrisma asociāciju un muzeju pieredze un specifiskās zināšanas abās valstīs tiks apvienotas projekta mērķu sasniegšanai. Projekta mērķa grupas ir: sabiedrība, nacionālie un starptautiskie tūrisma pakalpojumu sniedzēji, izglītības organizācijas, pārvaldes iestādes, MVU. Projekts attīstīs jaunu tūrisma produktu – Vēsturisko dārzu tūri ar 6 maršruta punktiem, kas vairos izpratni par nepieciešamību saglabāt dārza augu vēsturisko mantojumu. Tradicionālie augu un dārzeņu pārstrādes produkti tiks adaptēti mūsdienu vajadzībām. Maršruti, ko bagātinās pārstrādes produktu demonstrējumi, palīdzēs mazināt tūrisma sezonalitāti. Vēsturisko dārzu kā tūrisma objekta vadlīniju izstrāde būs noderīga kultūras un dabas tūrisma pakalpojumu sniedzējiem to pakalpojumu dažādošanā. Tiks izveidota Vēsturisko dārzu tūres karte, piemērota velo un autobraucējiem, ar informatīvām norādēm par pakalpojumu grupām: apmeklējamās vietas, pieejamie pakalpojumi, t.sk. ēdināšana un tūristu mītnes. Projekta laikā tiks ilgtspējīgi uzlabota infrastruktūra kultūras un dabas mantojuma objektos un izveidots vēsturisko šķirņu dārzs Rundāles pilī un Dobelē, abu valstu Dārzkopības institūtos izvietota saistoša informācija par vēsturisko augļaugu, dārzeņu un ziedaugu kolekcijām. Papildinātās kolekcijas kalpos atpūtai, izziņai un izglītībai. Tiks sagatavotas 2 brošūras, buklets un informatīvas lapas, popularizējot projektā sasniegto un informējot par dabas un kultūras mantojuma objektiem Latvijā un Lietuvā, vēsturisko dārzu vērtību un ilgtspējīgas apsaimniekošanas iespējām.

Europoje, taip pat Latvijoje ir Lietuvoje auga susidomėjimas senosiomis sodo augalų veislėmis ir jų perdirbimo produktais, kaip gamtiniu ir kultūriniu paveldu. Tačiau potencialūs lankytojai prarandami, neegzistuojant informacijai ir turistiniams maršrutams. Galimi gamtinio paveldo objektai nepritaikyti turistams. Projekto pagrindinis tikslas – padidinti autentiškų kolekcijų patrauklumą ir prieinamumą. Mokslinių institutų, kaimo turizmo asociacijų ir muziejų kompetencijos bus apjungtos pasiekti projekto tikslus ir tikslines grupes: visuomenę, nacionalines ir tarptautines turizmo firmas, valdžios institucijas, lavinimo įstaigas ir įmones. Bus sukurtas naujas turizmo produktas –Paveldo sodai, su tikslu išsaugoti gamtinį paveldą. Senieji vaisių ir daržovių produktų receptai bus pritaikyti šiuolaikiniams reikalavimams. Maršrutai su produktų demonstravimu padidins turistų skaičių ne sezono metu. Paveldo sodų turizmo produktas padės išplėsti turizmo paslaugas. Dviračių ir auto maršrutai bus prienami Paveldo sodų žemėlapyje, papildomai su visu paslaugų paketu: maitinimusi, nakvyne, lankytinais objektais.Projekto metu bus atnaujinti kultūrinio ir gamtinio paveldo objektai, istorinis sodas pasodintas Rundalės dvaro muziejuje, senųjų sodo, daržo ir gėlių veislių kolekcijos institutuose bus tinkamai apipavidalintos. Praturtintos kolekcijos bus skirtos poilsiui, švietimui ir mokslui. Dvi brošiūros ir bukletas bus paruošti projekto rezultatų sklaidai ir informacijai apie gamtinio ir kultūrinio paveldo objektus Latvijoje ir Lietuvoje, jų istorinę vertę, būtinybę išsaugoti istorinius sodininkystės objektus.

There is an increasing interest in old horticultural plant cultivators and their products as natural and cultural heritage objects across Europe as well in Latvia and Lithuania. Potential tourists in the Program area are lost due to lack of information and lack of developed routes. Potential horticultural heritage objects are not prepared for tourists’ needs. The overall objective of the project was to increase the attractiveness and accessibility of old horticultural plant collections as cultural and natural heritage. The best experience and specific competencies of research institutes, rural tourism associations and museums from both countries was combined for the achievement of the project aims. During the project implementation a new tourism product – Heritage garden tour with 7 route itineraries was developed and promoted during the exhibitions, seminars, media tours, project events. Heritage sites, that were selected and inspected by horticultural and tourism experts, include estates, manor house, memorial homesteads, Botanical gardens, private collections. The Heritage Gardens tourism product development guidelines were prepared including practical information for horticulture tourism product and best practices from Lithuania and Latvia heritage sites. Infrastructure of heritage orchards was improved at horticulture research institutes in Latvia and Lithuania as well as in Kaunas region museum. New historical orchard was planted at the Rundale Palace Museum. Both institutes enriched collections of heritage fruit trees, old vegetable, herb and ornamental plants. Brochures “Heritage Gardens: cultivar catalogue” and “Obelynė History and the Present” and booklet “Ancient Latvian and Lithuanian recipes with modern twist” were prepared giving information on natural and cultural heritage objects in Latvia and Lithuania, showing their historical value in the need for preservation of horticultural objects. Project results: During the implementation of the project collections of old fruit, vegetable and flowering plants at the institutes in Latvia and Lithuania were expanded, the historical orchard at Kaunas Museum was managed, the orchard of old cultivars at LP_1 was planted. All sites were prepared for visitors by renovation of roads and roads, by proper labeling and informative stands. Promotion of old cultivars already attracted by organized excursions, increased number of visitors. Promotion of old recipes from fruits and vegetables was done during seminars and gained interest from SME’s and general public, attracted new visitors that are intended to develop new products. Brochures “Heritage Gardens: cultivar catalogue” (HG_cultivar catalog ) and “Obelynė History and the Present” (Obelyne_history ) and booklet “Ancient Latvian and Lithuanian recipes with modern twist” (HG_recipes ) were published. Definition of Heritage Gardens Tourism Product was created for potential service providers and tourists: open sites for visitors (estates, manor houses, dendrological parks and gardens, etc.) offering to see their fruit, vegetable and herb gardens, to taste the produce, to learn about related heritage. The Heritage Gardens tourism product development guideline were created and disseminated to potential tourism product providers. The product development guideline includes best practices and practical information for a horticulture tourism product HG_product_development_guidelines_lv; HG_product_development_guidelines_en Heritage Gardens tourism map with 7 itineraries was printed in LV, LT, EN, DE and RU languages and promoted. 1_Zemgale_region_cross_border_EN ; 2_Selija_Latgale_EN ;3_Central_Lithuania_EN ;4_Kurzeme_Klaipeda_EN ; 5_Riga_Rusne_EN ; 6_Riga_Kaunas_EN ; 7_Riga_Daugavpils_Kaunas_EN . Promotion of Heritage Gardens tourism product was done during the seminars, Master classes, excursions, tourism tourism in Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, Netherlands and Spain. During the project the visitor center in the Latvian Institute of Horticulture was renovated – space for environment education, entrance hall, exhibition rooms, technical and staff rooms and so on. Demonstration orchard at Rundale Palace Museum was established with historical varieties. Orchard infrastructure adapted to visitors was created. Proper labeling was established.

Expected Outputs (EN):

Project will result to improved existing horticultural plant collections at museums in Latvia and Lithuania, adaption for visitors needs of collections at the research institutes, inventory of existing collections in both countries, prepared horticultural tourism product and promoted routes for ecotourism. All project results are aimed to increase visitor flow and the number of overnight stays of visitors. Main tourist season will start at orchard flowering time in early May and will last through the summer with old vegetables and flowering plants until apple harvest in late autumn. Additionally to that, revival of old products from fruit and vegetables, adaptation of products to modern needs, demonstration of processing, the prepared and promoted route will serve to overcome tourism seasonality and increase a number of overnight stays of visitors during the low tourism season. All activities carried out in the project are aimed to increase visitor number in the Programme area. Precise numbers of overnight stays of visitors is impossible to count, therefore given numbers are approximate and based on previous experience. According Latvian Country Tourism Association there is 10-12% tourist increase yearly. Establishment of new objects and places for visitors, improvement of services for tourists or creation of new ones, boost visitor flow to the objects. Developed common Latvian-Lithuanian Heritage Garden tour with joint services as museums, catering, accommodations, and promoted as a new tour will attract many more visitors interested in eco-tourism. Promoted tour in the international trade fair and tourism show Vakantiebeurs in Utrecht to tourist operators and to active tourists possibly will attract international tourists as well. Our estimate is that project will result in increase of visitors to Programme area by 2-3% per year.
