Description (FR): Les matériaux composites sont largement utilisés dans différents secteurs porteurs de la zone transfrontalière : les transports, les sports, le sanitaire, l’éolien ou encore l’aéronautique. Ces matériaux sont constitués d’une matrice polymère (thermoplastique ou thermodurcissable) et de fibres de renfort (verre, carbone, fibres naturelles). Leur recyclage est un problème transfrontalier du fait de la dispersion d’un secteur essentiellement composé de PME. Il s’agit alors d’un enjeu majeur dans un contexte européen de transition vers une économie circulaire pour une utilisation efficace des ressources et une réduction des impacts environnementaux des produits tout au long de leur cycle de vie. Le projet RECY-COMPOSITE a donc pour objectif de répondre au défi du recyclage des matériaux composites par une approche transfrontalière globale à trois niveaux : recyclage matière, recyclage thermochimique et valorisation énergétique uniquement en dernier recours. La recherche appliquée sera menée à la fois sur les déchets de production de composites thermo-durs et sur les matériaux composites en fin de vie, et visera à améliorer le cycle de vie de ces matériaux. Cette approche transfrontalière intégrée et innovante est rendue possible en rassemblant les compétences complémentaires des six partenaires pour couvrir la boucle de recyclage des matériaux composites et ainsi répondre aux besoins des entreprises de la zone.
Read more Description (EN): Composite materials are widely used in various growth sectors of the cross-border region: transportation, sports, sanitation, wind power and aeronautics. These materials are made of a polymer matrix (thermoplastic or thermosetting) and reinforcing fibres (glass, carbon, natural fibres). Their recycling is a cross-border problem due to the fragmentation of a sector essentially composed of SMEs. It therefore consists of a major challenge in the context of a European transition towards a circular economy for the effective use of resources and a reduction in environmental impact throughout their life cycle. Hence, the RECY-COMPOSITE project aims to respond to the challenge of recycling composite materials with an overall cross-border approach on three levels: material recycling, thermochemical recycling and energy recovery only as a last resort. Applied research will be conducted both for waste from the production of thermoset composites and end-of-life composite materials, and will aim to improve the life cycle of these materials. This integrated and innovative cross-border approach is made possible by pooling the complementary skills of the six partners to cover the recycling loop of the composite materials and thus respond to the needs of the companies in the area.

Deze materialen worden gemaakt vanuit een kunststofmatrix (thermoplastisch of thermohardend) en versterkende vezels (glas-, carbon- of natuurlijke vezels). Hun recyclage is een grensoverschrijdend probleem wegens de fragmentering van een sector die hoofdzakelijk uit kmo’s bestaat. Het gaat dan ook over een grote uitdaging in de context van een Europese transitie naar de circulaire economie met een efficiënt gebruik van de hulpbronnen en een verlaging van de milieu-impact over de volledige levensduur van een product. Het project RECY-COMPOSITE wil een antwoord bieden op de uitdaging van recyclage van composietmaterialen met een globale, grensoverschrijdende aanpak op drie niveaus: materiaalrecyclage, thermochemische recyclage en alleen in laatste instantie energierecuperatie. Er zal toegepast onderzoek worden gevoerd naar productieafval van thermohardende composieten en naar composietmaterialen op het eind van hun levensduur om de levenscyclus van deze materialen te verbeteren. Deze geïntegreerde en innovatieve grensoverschrijdende aanpak wordt mogelijk gemaakt door de bundeling van de complementaire vaardigheden van de zes partners om de recyclagekring van de composietmaterialen te sluiten en zo te beantwoorden aan de behoeften van de ondernemingen uit de regio.
Read more Achievements (FR): Afin de répondre au défi du recyclage des matériaux composites (recyclage mécanique, recyclage chimique), la recherche appliquée RECY-COMPOSITE a été menée à la fois sur les déchets de production de composites thermodurs et sur les matériaux composites en fin de vie. Dans la perspective d’un transfert industriel, l’aspect économique a été pris en compte pour sélectionner les solutions technologiques de recyclage en respectant la hiérarchie des modes de traitement des déchets décrite dans la législation. Les partenaires ont orienté leur recherche vers la chimie de spécialité pour offrir aux marchés transfrontaliers des produits recyclés à valeur ajoutée, et pas simplement des produits chargés. Une voie innovante envisagée est l’utilisation des matières recyclées ou des produits issus du recyclage chimique en tant qu’agents de charbonnisation pour la mise au point de systèmes intumescents. Les partenaires RECY-COMPOSITE ont mené leurs travaux de recherche sur des échantillons de composites à recycler provenant d’industriels de la zone Interreg France-Wallonie-Vlaanderen, et plus particulièrement sur les aspects de préparation mécanique (broyage et séparation), formulation de systèmes intumescents, (micro-)extrusion, évaluation des propriétés, et solvolyse dans le cas des composites à matrice thermodurcissable. Les résultats ont été présentés lors de différents événements ainsi qu’au webinar de clôture du 17 septembre 2020. En amont, différentes techniques de broyage (déchiquetage, impact, marteaux, couteaux) ont été testées pour la préparation mécanique de composites polyester/fibres de verre à recycler provenant de différents secteurs (bateaux de plaisance, éoliennes, sanitaire, construction, panneaux routiers…). Un protocole de caractérisation granulomorphologique des fractions broyées puis tamisées a été développé pour quantifier et classer les particules de résine et les fibres libérées de la résine. La longueur moyenne des fibres a aussi pu être déterminée. Un schéma de traitement de produits multicomposants a été mis en place pour isoler les composites renforcés en fibres de carbone en combinant plusieurs procédés de séparation mécaniques. Les métaux peuvent être récupérés par séparation magnétique ou courants de Foucault selon leur nature. Les renforts type mousse ou bois de faible densité sont séparés par séparation aéraulique ou table densimétrique. Enfin, la séparation électrostatique utilise la relativement bonne conductivité des fibres de carbone (par rapport aux fibres de verre ou aux résines polymériques). Ces opérations permettent de récupérer une fraction contenant des composites renforcés en fibres de carbone avec un haut degré de pureté (pouvant aller jusqu’à 99 %). Le procédé de solvolyse a été étudié sur des échantillons de composite polyester/fibres de verre et surtout des échantillons de composite époxy/fibres de carbone en vue de valoriser les fibres solvolysées. Les essais de solvolyse ont été réalisés en utilisant l’eau comme solvant. Les conditions opératoires (température, temps, co-solvant, additif, vitesse d’agitation) ont été étudiées pour améliorer la réaction de solvolyse du point de vue cinétique, du rendement et de la dépense énergétique. Les phases liquides et solides issues des essais ont été respectivement analysées par GC-MS et par TGA. Malgré une diminution de température de 350°C à 335°C et une réduction du temps de réaction (de 2h à 1h), la dépense énergétique pour chauffer le solvant et le maintenir à température est encore trop importante pour envisager un procédé continu et efficace de récupération de fibres de carbone par solvolyse. L’ajout de catalyseur n’est pas recommandé. Une piste de recherche prometteuse est l’utilisation d’une pression de CO2 dans le réacteur avant de démarrer la réaction de solvolyse. A conditions opératoires équivalentes, le rendement de solvolyse est augmenté de 20 % en utilisant 40 bar initiaux de CO2. Par comparaison, l’azote a un effet moindre. En conclusion, un procédé semi-continu est envisageable pour le traitement par solvolyse des composites à fibres de carbone. Il faudra toutefois combiner plusieurs des pistes étudiées séparément dans ce projet. Il reste également à trouver une voie de valorisation de la phase liquide pour la rentabilité du procédé de recyclage. Dans le cas des composites à matrice thermoplastique, la recherche RECY-COMPOSITE s’est focalisée sur le recyclage de composites à base de polyamide 6 (PA6) provenant du secteur automobile. Le but est de valoriser ces composites dans des produits innovants à destination de marchés à forte croissance (bâtiment, ferroviaire…). Ce recyclage mécanique est d’autant plus intéressant que le coût du polyamide (polymère technique) est relativement élevé. L’étude visant à l’utilisation de composite recyclé PA6/30% fibres de verre (FV) en tant qu’agent de charbonnisation dans des systèmes intumescents a permis de mettre en évidence :
1. Un effet synergiste en combinaison avec une matrice non charbonnisante (polypropylène PP), une source d’acide et un agent gonflant (polyphosphate d’ammonium APP) aboutissant au développement d’une structure intumescente dense et cohésive
2. La même efficacité de charbonnisation du composite recyclé PA6/FV en comparaison avec un PA6 non recyclé et non renforcé, ainsi qu’en comparaison au donneur de carbone classique (pentaérythritol)
3. La même efficacité de charbonnisation de composites recyclés provenant de 2 gisements différents, démontrée dans 2 types de matrice thermoplastique : PP et polycarbonate.
4. Une faible dégradation des performances des systèmes intumescents après vieillissement thermomécanique et humide de l’agent charbonnisant composite recyclé PA6/FV. Les propriétés mécaniques des formulations intumescentes les plus performantes contenant le composite recyclé PA6/FV ont également été étudiées. Ces formulations subissent une perte importante de ductilité et une augmentation de rigidité. L’extrusion assistée eau permet d’augmenter le domaine élastique, et de limiter le caractère fragile et la rigidité du matériau. Enfin, le procédé d’extrusion assistée eau a été utilisé pour le recyclage de matériaux PA6/20% fibres de lin afin d’abaisser la température de mise en oeuvre et limiter la dégradation. Le recyclage diminue fortement la longueur des fibres et influence donc la rhéologie des composites recyclés. Par contre, les propriétés mécaniques sont maintenues. L’effet de l’eau se limite à une baisse de la température de mise en oeuvre, et ne modifie pas significativement les propriétés rhéologiques et mécaniques. Le démarrage efficace du projet transfrontalier RECY-COMPOSITE s’est traduit par des actions de communication et de sensibilisation des entreprises dès le début du projet, en parallèle avec les activités de recherche. - Des outils communs de communication ont été mis en place tels que posters et présentations du projet. Le site internet dédicacé au projet www.recycomposite-interreg.eu a été mis en ligne en novembre 2016 dans 3 langues, français, néerlandais et anglais. Il a reçu au 30 septembre 2020 un total de 4220 visites de 3038 visiteurs. - L’équipe Recy-Composite a organisé avec succès l’évènement de lancement transfrontalier du projet en collaboration avec le pôle de compétitivité Team2 le 12 décembre 2016 à Loos-en-Gohelle (Hauts-de-France). Le succès était également au rendez-vous pour le 2ème événement transfrontalier organisé par les partenaires Recy-Composite le 22 février 2018. Le CTP a accueilli la cinquantaine de participants français, wallons et flamands dans ses locaux à Tournai (Belgique). Cet événement a été relayé dans différents médias régionaux et nationaux (presse écrite et télévision) suite à la conférence de presse organisée par les partenaires avec l’appui d’Innovatech. Enfin, l’événement de clôture, organisé le 17 septembre 2020 dans un format dématérialisé, a rassemblé près de 140 personnes provenant essentiellement de France et de Belgique. Ce webinar s’est articulé autour de la présentation des résultats de 2 projets transfrontaliers complémentaires dans le domaine des composites : COMPOSENS et RECY-COMPOSITE. Le programme complété par des interventions industrielles et une visite virtuelle de Certech a donné satisfaction à tous les participants. - A sa clôture, le projet transfrontalier RECY-COMPOSITE compte 15 articles de presse et 3 reportages télévisés. Le projet Recy-Composite a été mis à l’honneur dans le rapport d’activité 2017 du programme. Recy-Composite a également été retenu en tant que projet Interreg France-Wallonie-Vlaanderen du mois de juin 2018 et a fait l’objet d’un article sur le site de la DG Regio. Enfin, le projet transfrontalier RECY COMPOSITE était candidat au concours européen Regiostars2020. - Un dossier partagé, des réunions de travail et de nombreux échanges contribuent à la coopération transfrontalière entre les partenaires. La participation à des journées ou salons a permis de présenter le projet à plus de 150 industriels de la région franco-belge et de suivre de l’art dans le domaine du recyclage des matériaux plastiques et composites. - Enfin, le projet RECY-COMPOSITE compte 3 entreprises bénéficiant d’un soutien sur le versant flamand, dont 1 avec un nouveau produit pour l’entreprise, et 1 entreprise bénéficiant d’un soutien du côté français. Les actions concrètes des partenaires avec les industriels de la zone transfrontalière ont également conduit à des projets de collaboration en dehors du programme Interreg France-Wallonie-Vlaanderen.
Read more Achievements (EN): In order to meet the challenge of recycling composite materials (mechanical recycling, chemical recycling), applied research RECY-COMPOSITE has been conducted on both thermodur composite production waste and end-of-life composite materials. With a view to industrial transfer, the economic aspect has been taken into account in selecting technological solutions for recycling in accordance with the hierarchy of waste treatment methods described in the legislation. The partners focused their research on specialty chemistry to offer cross-border markets value-added recycled products, not simply loaded products. An innovative approach is the use of recycled materials or products from chemical recycling as coal mining agents for the development of intumescent systems. The RECY-COMPOSITE partners carried out their research on samples of composites to be recycled from industrialists in the Interreg France-Wallonie-Vlaanderen area, in particular on aspects of mechanical preparation (broking and separation), formulation of intumescent systems, (micro-)extrusion, assessment of properties, and solvolysis in the case of thermoset matrix composites. The results were presented at various events as well as at the closing webinar on September 17, 2020. Upstream, different grinding techniques (shredding, impact, hammers, knives) have been tested for the mechanical preparation of polyester composites/glass fibers to be recycled from different sectors (pleasure boats, wind turbines, sanitary, construction, road signs...). A granulomorphological characterisation protocol of crushed and then sifted fractions has been developed to quantify and classify resin particles and fibers released from the resin. The average length of the fibers could also be determined. A multi-component product treatment scheme has been put in place to isolate carbon fibre reinforced composites by combining several mechanical separation processes. Metals can be recovered by magnetic separation or Foucault currents depending on their nature. Low density foam or wood reinforcements are separated by aeraulic separation or densimetric table. Finally, electrostatic separation uses the relatively good conductivity of carbon fibers (compared to glass fibres or polymeric resins). These operations recover a fraction containing carbon fibre reinforced composites with a high degree of purity (up to 99 %). The solvolysis process was studied on polyester/glass fibre composite samples and especially epoxy/carbon fiber samples to enhance the solvolysed fibers. Solvolysis tests were performed using water as a solvent. The operating conditions (temperature, time, co-solvent, additive, stirring rate) have been studied to improve the solvolysis reaction in kinetics, efficiency and energy expenditure. The liquid and solid phases of the tests were analysed by GC-MS and TGA respectively. Despite a decrease in temperature from 350 °C to 335 °C and a reduction in the reaction time (from 2h to 1h), the energy expenditure to heat the solvent and keep it at temperature is still too important to consider a continuous and effective process of recovery of carbon fibers by solvolysis. The addition of catalyst is not recommended. A promising avenue for research is the use of CO2 pressure in the reactor before starting the solvolysis reaction. At equivalent operating conditions, the solvolysis yield is increased by 20 % using initial 40 bar of CO2. By comparison, nitrogen has a lesser effect. In conclusion, a semi-continuous process is possible for the solvolysis treatment of carbon fibre composites. However, it will be necessary to combine several of the tracks studied separately in this project. It is also necessary to find a way of recovering the liquid phase for the profitability of the recycling process.In the case of thermoplastic matrix composites, RECY-COMPOSITE research focused on recycling polyamide 6 (PA6) composites from the automotive sector. The aim is to enhance these composites in innovative products for high-growth markets (building, rail, etc.). This mechanical recycling is all the more interesting because the cost of polyamide (technical polymer) is relatively high. The study on the use of recycled composite PA6/30 % glass fibres (FV) as an agent of coalisation in intumescent systems revealed:
1. A synergistic effect in combination with a non-carbonising matrix (polypropylene PP), an acid source and a swelling agent (APP ammonium polyphosphate) resulting in the development of a dense and cohesive intumescent structure
2. The same charcoal efficiency of the PA6/FV recycled composite compared to a non-recycled and unreinforced PA6 and compared to the conventional carbon donor (pentaerythritol)
3. The same carbonisation efficiency of recycled composites from 2 different deposits, demonstrated in 2 types of thermoplastic matrix: Pp and polycarbonate.
4. Low performance degradation of intumescent systems after thermomechanical and wet aging of the recycled composite carbonising agent PA6/FV. The mechanical properties of the most efficient intumescent formulations containing recycled PA6/FV composite have also been studied. These formulations suffer a significant loss of ductility and an increase in rigidity. Water-assisted extrusion makes it possible to increase the elastic range, and to limit the fragile character and rigidity of the material. Finally, the water-assisted extrusion process was used for the recycling of PA6/20 % flax fibre materials in order to lower the operating temperature and limit degradation. Recycling greatly reduces the length of the fibers and thus influences the rheology of recycled composites. On the other hand, the mechanical properties are maintained. The effect of water is limited to a decrease in the temperature of application, and does not significantly alter the rheological and mechanical properties. The effective start of the RECY-COMPOSITE cross-border project has resulted in communication and awareness-raising actions among companies from the beginning of the project, in parallel with research activities. — Common communication tools have been put in place such as posters and presentations of the project. The website dedicated to the project www.recycomposite-interreg.eu was released in November 2016 in 3 languages, French, Dutch and English. As of September 30, 2020, it received a total of 4220 visits of 3038 visitors. — The Recy-Composite team successfully organised the cross-border launch event of the project in collaboration with Team2 competitiveness cluster on 12 December 2016 in Loos-en-Gohelle (Hauts-de-France). The success was also at the rendezvous for the 2nd cross-border event organised by Recy-Composite partners on February 22, 2018. The CTP welcomed fifty French, Walloon and Flemish participants to its premises in Tournai (Belgium). This event was relayed in various regional and national media (print and television) following the press conference organised by the partners with the support of Innovatech. Finally, the closing event, organised on 17 September 2020 in a dematerialised format, brought together nearly 140 people mainly from France and Belgium. This webinar was organised around the presentation of the results of 2 complementary cross-border projects in the field of composites: COMPOSENS and RECY-COMPOSITE. The program complemented by industrial interventions and a virtual tour of Certech gave satisfaction to all participants. — At its close, the cross-border project RECY-COMPOSITE has 15 press articles and 3 TV reports. The Recy-Composite project was highlighted in the 2017 activity report of the programme. Recy-Composite was also selected as Interreg France-Wallonie-Vlaanderen project in June 2018 and was the subject of an article on DG Regio’s website. Finally, the cross-border project RECY COMPOSITE was a candidate for the European competition Regiostars2020. — A shared dossier, working meetings and numerous exchanges contribute to cross-border cooperation between the partners. The participation in days or fairs allowed to present the project to more than 150 industrialists in the Franco-Belgian region and to follow art in the field of recycling plastic and composite materials. — Finally, the RECY-COMPOSITE project consists of 3 companies benefiting from support on the Flemish side, including 1 with a new product for the company, and 1 company with support from the French side. The concrete actions of the partners with industry in the cross-border area have also led to collaborative projects outside the Interreg France-Wallonie-Vlaanderen programme.

L’équipe RECY-COMPOSITE mettra en œuvre des actions transfrontalières de sensibilisation, recherche appliquée, dissémination, accompagnement et soutien afin d’aider les industriels à gérer leur problématique « composite » dans le cadre du recyclage. Dans ce cadre, les partenaires poursuivront leur collaboration au-delà du programme Interreg V pour pérenniser le réseau transfrontalier RECY-COMPOSITE. Les trois centres Certech, CREPIM et VKC-Centexbel ont déjà développé des collaborations transfrontalières en dehors du programme Interreg suite à leur coopération dans le contexte de projets Interreg III et IV. L’élargissement de ce partenariat solide avec l’intégration de compétences supplémentaires et complémentaires devrait permettre la mise en place de nouvelles collaborations transfrontalières encore effectives après la fin du projet, par exemple sous forme de projets de recherche impliquant au moins un partenaire de chaque côté de la frontière. 2. Twee van de ondernemingen die concrete steun ontvangen, zouden steun moeten krijgen voor de introductie van nieuwe producten. In feite streven de RECY-COMPOSITE-partners ernaar de industriële overdracht aan beide zijden van de grens te verzekeren. Deze overdracht kan op meerdere niveaus verlopen: een nieuw composietproduct dat gerecycleerde materialen bevat, een nieuwe kans of een nieuwe manier om het composietafval van de onderneming terug te winnen.
