De landbouwsector in Vlaanderen en Nederland staat continu onder druk van internationale concurrentie. Tot nu toe is het antwoord hierop schaalvergroting om de efficiëntie te verbeteren. Het beschikbare landbouwareaal in Vlaanderen en Nederland is echter veeleer kleiner en meer gefragmenteerd dan in de buurlanden Duitsland en Frankrijk. In de zoektocht naar meer efficiëntie worden voor deze dichtbevolkte regio’s de grenzen van de schaalvergroting sneller bereikt. Een andere manier om efficiënter te landbouwen is door mechanisatie. Hierbij krijgen landbouwmachines meer geïnstalleerd vermogen zodat de bewerking- of verwerkingssnelheid wordt vergroot. Deze trend leidt tot grotere, duurdere en zwaardere diesel-aangedreven machines die taak-specialistisch zijn. Traditioneel gaan schaalvergroting en mechanisering gepaard met elkaar, maar deze strategie biedt geen oplossing voor kleinere land- en tuinbouwbedrijven in de regio, die zich richten op de bio-teelt of op specifieke niches (groente, fruit, kleinfruit, boomteelt). Zulke kleinschalige bedrijven zijn vooral gebaat bij kleinere machines die voor diverse doeleinden inzetbaar zijn. Daarnaast is er vanuit het besef dat de landbouw moet verduurzamen een sterke beweging om landbouwactiviteiten in het ecosysteembeheer te integreren. Dit uit zich in een minimaal gebruik van chemische bestrijdingsmiddelen, het minimaliseren van de bodemverdichting, en vermindering van de uitstoot van broeikasgassen. Dit project biedt een directe oplossing voor de kleinschalige landbouwteelt met de ontwikkeling van diverse systeemconcepten en een prototype van een kleine, semi-autonome trekker die multi-inzetbaar is voor diverse landbouwtaken. Hierbij worden innovatieve technologieën toegepast zoals elektrische aandrijving, robotsystemen en sensoren. Het prototype kan bijvoorbeeld ingezet worden voor mechanische onkruidbestrijding, inzaaien, niet-kerende grondbewerking, bemesting en het oogsten van teelten.

Description (EN):

This project develops various system concepts for small, light semi-autonomous electric tractors that can be used for various agricultural tasks as a direct solution for small-scale farming. Innovative elements from mechatronics such as electric drive, robot systems, AI and sensors are applied. A group or swarm of these small semi-autonomous tractors can also handle larger tasks by working together. To prove the feasibility of this paradigm, this project also provides a prototype that can be used, for example, for mechanical weed control, seeding, non-turning soil tillage, fertilization and harvesting crops. The agricultural sector in Flanders and the Netherlands is constantly under pressure from international competition. The answer, so far, to improve operational efficiency was to scale up. Agricultural machines are given more installed power, so that the cultivating or processing speed is increased in order to cultivate larger areas with fewer operators faster. This trend, however, leads to larger, more expensive and heavier diesel-powered machines that are often task-specialized. The available agricultural area in Flanders and the Netherlands is smaller and more fragmented than in neighboring countries, Germany and France: the limits of scaling up are quickly reached for these densely populated regions. Scaling-up also does not offer a solution for smaller agricultural and horticultural companies in the region, which focus on organic cultivation or on specific niches (vegetables, fruit, berries, tree cultivation). Small-scale companies of this kind benefit especially from smaller machines that can be used for various purposes. In addition, from the awareness that agriculture must become more sustainable, there is a strong movement to integrate agricultural activities into the ecosystem management. This is reflected in the minimal use of chemical pesticides, the minimization of soil compaction, and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. The paradigm as proposed by this project is at odds with the current trend towards larger and heavier machines - it is an incentive for ecosystem management and allows us to work towards "zero emissions".

Binnen het CIMAT-project werden de verschillende stakeholders bevraagd (telers verschillende gewassen) en werden op deze manier de noden en wensen van deze sector in kaart gebracht. Op basis hiervan worden een aantal business cases uitgewerkt voor specifieke toepassingen van de autonome landbouwrobot. Een eerste prototype van de autonome landbouwrobot werd volledig conceptueel uitgebouwd en gedimensioneerd. Heel wat tijd werd gespendeerd aan de veiligheidsanalyse en CE-certifiering van deze landbouwrobot. Een fysisch prototype van de multi-inzetbare agrorobot is klaar voor veldproeven (zie ook CIMAT nieuwsbrief 3 november 2021). Veldtesten en demonstraties worden dit najaar en in het voorjaar van 2022 ingepland.

This project offers a direct solution for small-scale farming with the development of various system concepts and a prototype of a small, autonomous agricultural robot that is multi-useable for various agricultural tasks. Innovative technologies such as electric drive, robot systems and sensors are used. For example, the prototype can be used for mechanical weed control, sowing, non-turning tillage, fertilisation and harvesting of crops. Within the CIMAT project, the different stakeholders were questioned (farmers different crops) and in this way the needs and wishes of this sector were mapped. Based on this, a number of business cases are developed for specific applications of the autonomous agricultural robot. A first prototype of the autonomous agricultural robot was fully conceptually developed and dimensioned. A lot of time was spent on the safety analysis and CE-certifiering of this agricultural robot.
