Tegen 2050 zullen er naar verwachting 9 miljard mensen op aarde leven. Om deze mensen te kunnen voeden is er substantieel meer kwalitatief en gezond voedsel nodig, terwijl de beschikbare oppervlakte aan landbouwgronden niet zal stijgen. Er is bijgevolg een grote nood aan meer én duurzamere productiviteit in de land- en tuinbouw. Om deze vraag te beantwoorden, zet het Interreg project ‘SMART GROWERS’ in op de implementatie van ‘smart farming’ in de land- en tuinbouw in de Vlaams-Nederlandse grensregio. Het project Smart Growers wil drie slimme technieken onderzoeken en in de praktijk brengen: een automatisch onkruidbestrijdingssysteem, een intelligent irrigatie- en bemestingssysteem, en een op afstand bedienbaar sensorsysteem voor het ontdekken van afwijkingen in gewassen. Deze technieken zullen worden toegepast op een drietal voor de grensregio belangrijke teelten: asperges, blauwe bessen en laanbomen. Op minstens 8 locaties verspreid in de grensregio zullen bij pilootbedrijven praktijktesten uitgevoerd worden. Vervolgens zal de verzamelde kennis breed verspreid worden naar zowel de agrarische als de hightech sector, via een online Smart Farming platform. Bovendien zullen geïnteresseerde bedrijven via workshops en demonstraties begeleiding krijgen bij de implementatie van deze nieuwe ‘smart farming’ technieken.

By 2050, 9 billion people are expected to live on Earth. To be able to feed these people, substantially more high-quality and healthy food is needed, while the available area of agricultural land will not increase. Consequently, there is a great need for more and more sustainable productivity in agriculture and horticulture. To answer this demand, the Interreg project 'SMART GROWERS' focuses on the implementation of 'smart farming' in agriculture and horticulture in the Flemish-Dutch border region. The project aims to investigate and put into practice three smart techniques: an automatic weed control system, an intelligent irrigation and fertilization system, and a remote-controlled sensor system for detecting deviations in crops. These techniques will be applied to three crops that are important for the border region: asparagus, blueberries and avenue trees. Pilot companies will conduct practical tests in at least 8 locations throughout the border region. The collected knowledge will then be widely disseminated to both the agricultural and high-tech sectors, via an online Smart Farming platform. In addition, interested companies will receive guidance through workshops and demonstrations on the implementation of these new 'smart farming' techniques.

Om aan deze vraag te beantwoorden, zette Smart Growers in op de implementatie van ‘smart farming’ in de land- en tuinbouw in de Vlaams-Nederlandse grensregio. Het project onderzocht drie slimme technieken en bracht ze korter naar de praktijk, specifiek voor een drietal voor de grensregio belangrijke teelten: asperge, blauwe bes en laanbomen. Met als doel technieken te ontwikkelen voor gerichte alternatieve onkruidbestrijding bij blauwe bes en laanbomen, startten we in 2020 met een selectie van perspectiefvolle technologieën, waaronder LVS-spuittechnieken, de hete luchtmachines van WeedControl, de Caffini Graskiller met water onder hoge druk en de Spot-On techniek van Mantis ULV. Enkele van deze werden weerhouden voor verdere testen. Zo ontwikkelden we samen met WeedControl we een prototype voor toepassing van hete lucht op de schuine rug bij blauwe bes. Ook de Spot-On techniek werd geoptimaliseerd voor gerichte bespuiting rond de stam bij laanbomen. Tenslotte ontwikkelden we de Treebot als prototype autonome robot voor gerichte bespuiting door cameragebaseerde onkruiddetectie in de blauwe bessenteelt. Zowel de Spot-On als de Treebot maken gebruik van het biologische middel pelargonzuur. Uit de vele pelargonzuurproeven werden enkele richtlijnen opgesteld voor gebruik van dit middel als alternatief voor de traditionele chemische onkruidbestrijdingsmiddelen. Voor het intelligent aansturen van irrigatie ontwikkelden we een sensornetwerk bestaande uit sensornodes en een centrale gateway. Op elke sensornode kunnen verschillende types (bodemvocht)sensoren worden aangesloten. De gegevens van deze sensoren worden door de sensornode uitgelezen en draadloos gecommuniceerd met de gateway die op haar beurt alle gegevens verzamelt en doorstuurt naar de cloud. Daarnaast ontwikkelden we een irrigatieadviesmodel dat actuele weers- en bodemgegevens vertaalt naar irrigatieschema’s, voor alle drie de focusteelten. Het irrigatieadvies, alsook alle data van het sensornetwerk, kan geraadpleegd worden op een online dataplatform. Bovendien demonstreerden we op twee verschillende proefpercelen de mogelijkheid om met dit irrigatieadvies het irrigatiesysteem vanop afstand aan te sturen. Tot slot werden camera’s op drones en tractoren ingezet om de gewassen te monitoren. We ontwikkelden protocols voor het maken en verwerken van de beelden, zowel in twee als in drie dimensies en onderzochten de meerwaarde van deze technieken voor de teelten asperge, blauwe bes, laanbomen en peer. Als perspectiefvolle toepassingen van remote sensing selecteerden we het opsporen van lekken in de druppelleidingen bij asperge, biomassabepaling bij asperge en peer als basis voor respectievelijk opbrengstvoorspelling en variabele wortelsnoei, inventarisatie van de kwaliteit in de sierteelt en het tellen van de bloemen bij blauwe bes als basis voor opbrengstvoorspelling. Voor deze laatste toepassing ontwikkelden we een prototype camera-opstelling die de blauwe bessenstruiken vanop de tractor filmt om d.m.v. een artificial intelligence algoritme de bloemen te herkennen en te tellen. Op verschillende locaties verspreid in de grensregio werden bij pilootbedrijven praktijktesten uitgevoerd. De verzamelde kennis werd breed verspreid naar zowel de agrarische als de hightech sector, via het online Smart Farming platform smartgrowers.eu. Geïnteresseerde bedrijven kregen via seminaries en demonstraties begeleiding bij de implementatie van deze ‘smart farming’ technieken.

To answer this question, Smart Growers focused on the implementation of ‘smart farming’ in agriculture and horticulture in the Flemish-Dutch border region. The project examined three smart techniques and brought them to practice shorter, specifically for three important crops for the border region: asparagus, blue berry and avenue trees. With the aim of developing techniques for targeted alternative weed control in blueberry and avenue trees, we started in 2020 with a selection of perspective technologies, including LVS spraying techniques, WeedControl’s hot air machines, the Caffini Graskiller with high pressure water and the Spot-On technique from Mantis ULV. Some of these were stopped for further testing. Together with WeedControl, we developed a prototype for the application of hot air on the slanted back in blueberry. The Spot-On technique was also optimised for targeted spraying around the trunk at avenue trees. Finally, we developed the Treebot as a prototype autonomous robot for targeted spraying by camera-based weed detection in blueberry cultivation. Both Spot-On and Treebot use the biological agent pelargonic acid. From the many pelargonic acid tests, some guidelines were drawn up for the use of this product as an alternative to traditional chemical herbicides. For intelligent irrigation control, we developed a sensor network consisting of sensor nodes and a central gateway. Different types of (bottom moisture) sensors can be connected to each sensor node. The data from these sensors are read out by the sensor node and wirelessly communicated with the gateway that in turn collects all data and transmits it to the cloud. In addition, we developed an irrigation advisory model that translates current weather and soil data into irrigation schemes, for all three focus crops. The irrigation advice, as well as all data from the sensor network, can be consulted on an online data platform. In addition, we demonstrated on two different test plots the possibility to control the irrigation system remotely with this irrigation advice. Finally, cameras on drones and tractors were used to monitor the crops. We developed protocols for the creation and processing of the images, both in two and three dimensions and examined the added value of these techniques for the crops asparagus, blueberry, avenue trees and pear. As perspective applications of remote sensing, we selected the detection of leaks in the droplet pipes in asparagus, biomass determination in asparagus and pear as a basis for yield prediction and variable root pruning respectively, inventory of the quality in floriculture and counting the flowers in blueberry as a basis for yield prediction. For this latter application, we developed a prototype camera setup that filmed the blueberry bushes from the tractor to recognise and count the flowers using an artificial intelligence algorithm. Practical tests were carried out at various locations in the border region at pilot companies. The knowledge gathered was widely disseminated to both the agricultural and high-tech sectors, via the online Smart Farming platform smartgrowers.eu. Interested companies received guidance in the implementation of these ‘smart farming’ techniques through seminars and demonstrations.
